GAME SUMMARY

Return To Mysterious Island

Rating: 4.4 (23 votes cast)

The true essence of adventure is captured in this second PC game inspired by renowned author Jules Verne. In this first-person survival adventure, players will encounter recognisable locations from the famous novel, including the granite house, the volcano and the Nautilus. However, Return to Mysterious Island goes beyond Jules Verne's storytelling as players take on the role of Mina, a courageous young woman on a solo round-the-world sailing expedition.

In your quest for survival using logic, discovery, creative inventory management, and elements of the supernatural, the adventure unfolds across splendid photorealistic pre-rendered vistas. Intuitive puzzle challenges and vast exploration of the lush tropical landscapes of the island, all combine for a brilliantly executed adventure game.

Round-the-world saling expedition... Ship wrecked on a deserted island.. The ghost of Captain Nemo... The quest for survival... Caught in a tremendous storm, Mina, our heroine, becomes stranded on the shores of a wild and apparently uninhabited island. As she explores her new surrounding, she uncovers artifacts, living spaces and technologies left behind by the people who came before her to this uncharted island.

Return To Mysterious Island review

By leifvassoy posted 2nd January 2011

What I liked about this game, is first of all the atmosphere (It got me to read the original Jules Verne classic), technical aspects like the need to combine and recombine your assets in order to progress (like assembling different objects into new and slightly more sophisticated, although never so difficult that it does not remain an entertaining game). The only really difficult thing is (POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING AHEAD!) that you need to examine the famous captain Nemo's belongings really carefully in order to deal with some riddles associated with them.

However, the game is, just like the old classic Amerzone and other adventure games filled with atmosphere, and proof that state of the art graphics is not the most important element in order to tell a good story. Not to say that the graphics is bad in this game, it is just not state of the art, but it is sufficient. One of my sons and I spent a delightful weekend walking around the mysterious island together, and it felt like time well spent. Recommended warmly to any adventure game player (and that goes for the original book too, by the way!!)

I was actually surprised by this game. I didn't really think an adventure game with pre-rendered graphics could impress me this much, at least not in this day and age. But yes - it's beautiful, not to mention atmospheric and immersive! The main character in the adventure is great as well, she makes you feel involved in the story and not like you're just playing an anonymous, nameless person. The thing that stands out the most has to be the inventory system though - you can pick up loads of different items, and combine them in different ways to create tools and other things you need to survive and further your quest on the Mysterious Island. In the end, this is an amazing game which I recommend to anyone who likes a good adventure!
