Renegade Ops review

By dokbido posted 12th May

So I don't usually bother to write reviews for games, but this game deserves some hype and recommendations. Renegade Ops is a top-down twin stick shooter were a group of 4 can ride around blowing everything up while having fun. Each vehicle has special abilities and I would not be surprised if you ended up fully upgrading three to four of them in your total play time. That's all because of the fun to be had here playing through the game's co-op and in single player with easy, normal, and hardcore modes to enjoy. The game is seriously a good time and you don't feel cheated in the slightest with the gameplay. The controls takes a bit getting used to and I still feel like I'm improving, but it's also very straight forward and anyone can grab a controller and go. Best way to describe it is like your driving a vehicle in Halo, it drives in the direction you aim and the animation makes the vehicle respond with physics intact. Note that I only played this on a 360 controller, which is fully supported. The story sequences are relatively brief and actually gave me a laugh a few times, otherwise it's a typical comicbook-ish look perhaps better quality than most games that do this style. There is also a ranking system at the end of each mission, you get graded and I found myself actually aiming for a higher score in this day and age of gaming. Renegade Ops is an absolute blast in co-op, so make sure you can find a buddy to go through it with your second and third time. From what I could see their aren't many public online games being hold, so definitely have a mic and a buddy to enjoy co-op. The DLC adds 3 more missions plus more and it certainly felt like it was worth it. This game is just great fun and has my full recommendation. If you like the concept and genre then this is an easy buy. You'll likely be looking for more after playing it to death.

İt's a nice game to hangout with friends for a while. But there is not much for variety and game doesn't have much to surprise you. You usually go explode some stuff and that's it. Character Progress is good. Some boss fights are cool. But don't expect a story or a great gameplay.

I picked up the four pack with some friends and we had a blast playing it, it's not a very long game but considering the price you it's great value for the money. The graphics are great, although i would recommend you play this with a controller the keyboard and mouse controls good as well. The combat is really satisfying with a lot of pretty explosions, the story is not the best but to be honest I don't think anyone will play this game for a good story.

Explosive combat and terrific controls make Renegade Ops a great vehicular dual-stick shooter.

It reminds me sort of what the mechanics of Blast Corps on the N64 was like, but with a military setting. This is a good thing.

It's on Steam too so that makes things easy for me.

Could be fun, I hope they introduce multiplayer/co-op if it's not already implemented, at some point, or maybe in a sequel if it's popular enough.

Would be nice to have a custom map maker available too. >_>

Renegade Ops is good choice.

Renegade Ops is a good game, its good ol fashion arcade style. The graphics are good for a top view game, controls for pc are ok, managable anyway but the game is best played with a pc xbox controller (which i dont have but tryed it at a friends). I give this game a 7 because the music i didnt even notice cuz it really had no theme to the game. The gameplay can be frustrating since the vehicles slide all over and sometimes get stuck in places. and the upgrade system is pretty weak for example sometimes the first upgrade is far better than the last in a certain row, which was kinda wierd. Lastly the games replayability isnt really there...Difficulty is right in terms of easy medium and hard, story is good considering what the game is, ya thats it. WARNING: dont buy this off Steam, took me hours of work to get it running correctly, read the forums there if u dont believe me, lots are having the same problems....

it was a good deal with a four pack purchase. my ps2 controller with a cheap pc converter worked like a charm. nice action with great explosion effects and fragile environment.

Pretty looking game, with an awesome destruction engine :) Best played in coop with some friends, which provides for a very fun times. The game might be on the short side, but dlc adds more gameplay hours to make up for it.

Be aware that a controller is very much preferred when playing, since keyboard controls seem to be really awkward.

Decent title

Reminds me of old pegasus games. The gameplay is fast, fun and engaging.

The only drawback is the clunky controls that sometimes make your vehicle go wrong way, other than that game is great.

Renegade Ops, a love letter

By rocketsurgeon posted 10th October 2012

I really like this game. It's an arcade run-and-gun (but with vehicles) at its best. You play as one of a number of different characters, each with their own specialty and, more importantly, heavily armed vehicle. You get dropped into the action, and then you have to drive around on the fairly large map completing objectives.

The objectives tend to be rather simple things - your basic kill this and/or fetch/save that style goals. The thing is, the lack of depth of either story or objectives does not matter. The purpose of the game is to have a blast blasting baddies, and it delivers.

As is usual in the genre, you pick up new weapons and abilities as you go along, and every once in a while you run into a boss and the obligatory boss fight, or even some objective that takes you out of the normal drive-around-shooting-stuff mode of the game.

If all of this isn't enough, there's also co-op play over the Internet, and while I have not spent as much time as I'd like doing this, it is very satisfying and I highly recommend sharing a 4-pack with a couple friends.

Good shoot them up for killing time. Has a RPG element to it that doesn't detract from gameplay. Loads of fun to play with your friends in coop. Much more fun than I expected, got it for the good ratings and had a nice surprise.

Renegade Ops - hopefully the fist step to a good series

By Tennou posted 13th August 2012

The story and presentation: Well it´s a coin with 2 sides. The story like it is... is lame. Dictator wants world domination, special unit goes out to stop him *yaaawwn* BUT, there´s this very cool presentation; videos are in a unique old school comic style. Instead of rendered CG Videos there´s a camera floating over hand painted comic panels, the texts are spoke by good voice actors.

The gamepla: Oh men... it´s like a delicous soup with a nasty fly in it. The good things are the fast paced action, there´s not a moment to rest. There´s always more to do on a level-map then you got time. Yup, timelimit. You´ve got like 5 minutes for every main goal (there are more then one on every map). The completion of one Main goal doesn´t need 5 minutes but there are many secondary goals wich can only be done between the short time window to the next main goal. That CAN be annoying but you shouldn´t let yourself offend by that. It´s a highscore hunt after all. The point´s you get in a mission are not just for highscore lists to compete with your friends and the world, they are also experience points. With a raising level you get more perks and special abilitys. So if you can´t complete your current mission, you can repeat the last one until you´ve leveled high enough to try again. Every of the big selection of renegade ops has a unique special ability, like shild or spawning ant lions (Gordon Freeman from Half Life does this, he is a playable Op!) and every op collects it´s own Exp and lvls up on it´s own, the replay value of the game is therefore GIGANTIC! Also this game has local and network Coop with adds a ton of fun to every game!

So yeah now to the "fly in this delicious soup"... The controls... oh how I hate them. They are just plain terrible. Right is only right if your vehicle faces right. To face it right, you have to press right... this just doesn´t work. It drives curves on it´s own, in it´s own way and if there is something blocking you can do nothing then just keep pressing in it´s direction. Hard to explain... the car drives curves but you can only press hard left, hard right, hard up and hard down. That´s causes a lot of confusion. However to make things a bit easier I highly recommend a game pad (microsoft 360).

Sound is kinda boring besides the good voice actors. Sound and music is shallow. The graphic is at it is "okay" but the explosion and fire and power up effects are a true joy.

All together I give this game 4 stars out of 5 since it is a hell of a lot of fun. Just don´t play this if you get easyly mad... the controls and time limit can cause rage quits.

Pros: Nice looking, cool destruction engine, lots of coop fun, if you have bunch of friends who you can play together with.

Cons: Keyboard controls seem to be really awkward and the game is only playable with a controller. The game might be a bit too short, but dlc makes up for it.

Conclusion: get the four pack which comes with 2 free copies and hop in to play together with your friends, otherwise it's not really worth it.

Unplayable with keyboard!

By ludeman posted 10th August 2012

Arcade shoot ‘em up with very nice graphics

Too bad it’s virtually unplayable with keyboard! You need a gamepad, oh, but only an Xbox 360 pad will work! Just great my old Logitech pad is a no go.

Fun game, has coop and excellent graphics but the experience is marred by horrendous control s

By mattyplant posted 10th August 2012

Awesome game from Sega. Twin Stick style with a great story to it. Play through on the 360, now im a PC gamer i just had to buy it again, even better when there are 4 of you! Lots of stuff to blow up and the DLC makes it much more enjoyable!

It's surprising but I haven't felt such a fresh breeze in a long time. Renedage Ops is a classic game in a new, shiny package. A great, outstanding and captivating product, a true gem among games sold through digital distribution. It doesn't do anything new but it's homework is done perfectly. It is a gamer's bible written in binary code. Pure awesomeness!

Very addicting game. Great fast paced co-op vehicular shooter. It does take awhile to get used to the controls if using a keyboard. Campaign is a few hours, but steam achievements and highscores will keep you going for awhile

A fun vehicular shooter that'll keep you entertained for a while. It's nothing spectacular or groundbreaking, but it looks good.

A gamepad is recommended by the game and I would agree with that recommendation; using mouse + keyboard is a bit awkward, but you can still get things done.

This is a good game if you want some mindless, over-the-top action without having to really engage your brain. This isn't a criticism; it's nice to have this sort of game lying around when you just feel like blowing things up.

By haln posted 7th June 2012

Surprisingly a lot more exciting and fun then I had expected. It's fast, there are explosions all around, and the scenery isn't all too bad. The one fault is the controls with a keyboard, it's not impossible to play, but it definitely could have been done better as movement is a little difficult. This game is definitely one to try out if you have interest in cars with guns.

Really good at co-op..

By lejyoner00 posted 4th June 2012

Renegade Ops is a good game and it is good old fashion arcade style. If you have a nice co-op buddy or buddies, Renegade Ops is suitible for you. It has amazing visuals and nice coop mode so if you are looking for couch co-op and you have controllers for everyone this is your game. Supporting up to 4 players and it has 4-pack version for them.. Graphics seems very nice for this style games. It takes 4 star from me because it has short campaign. However it is enjoyable enough, especially co-op gamers. Finally, I think that's a good news for steam users, it is steamworks game.

Looking for a good co-op action game with nice graphics? Look no further and grab a 4pack of Renegade ops. It's the arcade experience reinvented, with great looking visuals, story mode and leaderboards. The game is a bit short but bonus DLCs add to the length and bring more fun weapons to the table. Dual-stick gamepad is a must!

A fast-paced top-down shooter build on the engine you may know from Just Cause 2. This means you'll see lots of effects and explosions, and never-ending actions. The game's fun, though some parts might seem a bit difficult at first, especially if there's a time limit. It doesn't take too long to complete, but you can replay it with different vehicles (and more are available as DLC). Also, don't even think about playing this without a controller. And if you fancy some co-op multiplayer with your friends, consider buying it in a four-pack.

By Eldredpe posted 24th May 2012

A really excellent co-op destruction game. It has some character/car progression and is basically set in an isometric Just Cause 2 engine. Highly recommended.

As an aside, I don't really understand the people out there that are really down on Steam DRM, but if you happen to be one of them, this is a Steamworks game and must be activated on Steam to play.

Fun co-op game with a buddy

By ebo posted 29th October 2011

This is a fun experience to be had, a bit short (took me only around 3 hours to complete) but there are 5 characters in total and to bring each of them to level 50 (and unlock all their perks) you need to play each mission (9 in total, from 15 to 25 minutes) at least 6 times, so do the math if you're a completionist. A nice bonus for Half Life fans is the Gordon Freeman character (in his famous yellow buggy). Game also has leaderboards so you can compare your score to your friends and co-op is up to 4 players in total.
