Raptor is one of the best 2D shoot 'em up ever!

Enjoy the pulse-pounding sound track and the enhanced graphics of this 2010 edition.

After each level, go to the supply room to repair you ship or buy new weapons and shields. Do advised choice, some weapons are only effective on ground or air targets, while some are effective on both. Don't waste you money, the best weapons are realy expensive!

Raptor : Call of the Shadow - 2010 Edition review

If you're a fan of top-down scrolling shooters, lots of gunfire, big explosions, hordes of oncoming enemies, weapon upgrades, and old-school gaming mayhem, Raptor should satisfy you. There's little or no plot to speak of, which means there's more time to fly your advanced fighter plane and shoot more foes with your array of weaponry.

The graphics are little changed from the original DOS version, so if eye candy's a requirement, you may be a little disappointed. But if you look past the somewhat blocky sprites and concentrate on delivering high-velocity destruction to the waves of enemies facing you, you'll be just fine.

Raptor, very much a classic vertical scrolling game and one of my personal favorites for over 15 years years now. All the game is is straight up, high intensity action whereupon the player faces many waves of bad guy cannon fodder using an assortment of many weapons available. Depending on the difficulty, the player can face massive waves all throughout every level, allowing for effective difficulty scaling. The array of weapons is actually quite diverse, from simple machine guns, to missiles, bombs, lasers, turrets and quite a few others. Beauty of that is that if the player has enough money, they can purchase ALL of them, and switch between them. Speaking of purchasing, the player acquires money from destroying anything in missions, money which is used for buying new weapons, replenishing “health” and buying bombs.

The levels are separated into three “sectors” consisting of 10 missions that each bring different challenges, each more difficult than the previous, but more rewarding. While each individual level in each sector cannot be selected to be replayed, they are typically kinda short and each sector can be replayed as many times as the player wishes. While short levels may sound like a downside, the player's survivability is not all the high, especially in later levels, making short levels very much needed. Now here's the interesting part: despite the fact that the levels replayed are the same, I have always found them to be very repayable.

The downside to this game is not so much the game, but an issue that arose from being ported to windows. The controls, outside of the mouse, only function at half speed, so the player is only moving at half speed. The mouse isn't effected by this, but has some trouble getting to the far right side of the screen, but there's not typically a lot to do there, so it's not a big deal.

All in all, I have enjoyed this game for approaching 20 years now, and I highly recommend it, as long as you use mouse controls.

I remember this very addictive game from several years back, and I really liked it back then, and still do! But with this 2010 version also comes a bug which makes my newly bought weapens disappear, so that it becomes impossible to win the game. A very addictive and fun game, but if this bug is not solved, it becomes a waste of money.

Raptor : Call of the Shadow - 2010 Edition review

In some ways Raptor: Call of the Shadow can be considered a classic for the 1990s shooter era. It's easy to learn, and very formulaic. You're a fighter pilot for the MegaCorp, all you have to do is shoot enemy vehicles and buildings, and survive through waves of attacks. Along the way you get to resupply and upgrade your weaponry, but the choices aren't that much.

Playing the keyboard is quite adequate, but using the mouse through the DotEmu seems to cause a lagging effect on the controls.

Graphically speaking, I didn't noticed any significant update from the DOS version, but at least this game doesn't have any DRM.

Very recommended!
