Too obviously Stepmania

By cpubasic13 posted 12th February 2012

While I already was aware it uses the Stepmania 5 engine, it becomes really obvious upon playing the game. Within the five songs available, the charts don't really make a whole lot of sense. Keeping in mind that this is primarily aimed towards pad players, the hardest charts seem to not know if they want to be straightforward or gimmicky, therefore feel very awkward and falling for the traps of various charts created by others outside of a professional scope. A lot of the gimmicks used seem forced, making this seem more like a demo of Stepmania 5 as a whole rather than Pulsen as a commercial product.

I feel a lack of effort also made the presentation quite... bland. No fancy banner graphics for each individual song to easily point out what song is what and the lack of better backgrounds makes the game lack personality. The Nyancat remix may be the most individual, but a bit more effort could have been used in the other songs.

The song selection is nothing stellar here. No songs pop out as amazing and they seem too generic. This is a personal taste issue though.

The presentation as a whole is consistent, making it stand out as its own entity, but ultimately failing at capturing those that are interested in these games. Many other projects -- most of which are free -- have done miles ahead in terms of overall production compared to this, and the fact that extra songs cost money when the base package doesn't really help define the game surely doesn't help matters.

I cannot rate the first pack of songs as I did not -- and at this point will not -- purchase them. I recognize a few artists in that pack I like, but without knowing the songs I cannot even feel tempted to put forth money towards it.

If you are interested in 4-panel play on your PC or perhaps some other form of play for music games, you should definitely give Stepmania 5 a try and find some custom songs for it. There are thousands, if not millions of simfiles available for instant play. As it stands, Pulsen does nothing to stand out as a commercial product.

It is a generic rhythm game, it is a not so generic rhythm game. Saying generic, it has nothing new comparing to other rhythm game. On the not so genenric side, you use your keyboard to play. There no dance, no body movement, but just tapping the key. It make you way harder to immerse into the songs and game. So inn both cases, I think they are all minus.

Plus side, it is free.

This is a a game where everything seems to be not bad just not great. It does not really bring anything new to this type of game and the game play is ok. The music that come with the game is not bad but there are only 1 or 2 songs that are actually good. In the end its free and free is not a bad price for an OK game.

Pulsen is a music and rhythm game. You need to accurate your ability to listen to musical beats and catch notes in accordance to those beats. It's like an electronic whack-a-mole, in Pulsen you time each and every note by tapping a key or pressing a button. Not very difficult andif you like dance-trance music is cool for having a good time.

Pulsen doesn't stray at all from the things that make rhythm games so popular. It has a good variety of gameplay options available, and runs smoothly. Some minor gripes are that scores from previous runs are not shown on the song selection screen, and the number of the songs available is a little lackluster. The biggest problem, however, is that everything Pulsen does, Stepmania does equally well or better. There aren't any improvements over what's already been out there for years.

No idea if it supports a dance pad properly, as I don't have one available to test.

Wow, just wow was my experience with this game. Don't get me wrong this is the good kind of wow! This game is like Dance Dance: Revolution for the computer and it is the best computer version I have ever seen. I'm just gonna break it down into some categories:

-Gameplay-

As I said above, It is exactly like Dance Dance: Revolution where you press the directional key corresponding to the incoming arrow, which works well. It is a little more strict in the sense that you have to press the arrow exactly when it's in the center of note receptor, but you will get use to it. The game starts with 4 songs, and I have unlocked one through playing the game... I do not know if it is possible to unlock more.

-Sound-

The sound is crisp and clear like it should be and the techno soundtrack is very fun and enjoyable to listen too. The small track list is a little disappointing but seeing as the game is free I can not complain!

-Graphics-

The graphics are smooth and very nice to look at... If you double tap start(Enter) before a song starts, it will take you into a modification mode where you can tweak any settings you like. These include the shapes and designs of the note blocks and receptors. I found it very fun to switch around with the note designs to see what looked the coolest.

Overall the game is a very enjoyable experience and I am already playing the game whenever I am bored... The increasing difficulty levels also add a lot of replayability to this game and I see myself coming back to practice so I can master the highest difficulty :)

5/5 *****

Not fun!

By Accatone posted 6th January 2012

I thought I would enjoy Pulsen, but after playing a couple of levels I saw that it's not fun to play at all! It's all pushing buttons left-right-up-down and catching notes, and it holds your interest maybe for only a minute. And it's frustrating to play the more advanced levels because of the insane speed of the notes. Not worth it.

Not a fan of rhythm game but this game is sure fun to play, and the best part is that its free to play too, just set aside 20 or so minute and enjoy tapping on your keyboard with some great music.

Nice musical game. It's not revolutionary, but it's very addictive. You can do thousands of combinations with the music, and you can be trying for hours.

Really nice and quite funny rhythm game which relies on the ability to listen to musical beats. Now it costs nothing so you have to take it.

Among all those expensive "play your own music" games, this one comes for free, but is a strong competitor nevertheless. Granted, it all comes down to the music, but all in all, the gameplay is smooth and fluent, and the presentation is nice. It has a ton of settings so you can adjust it to your preference. I'd give it a 3-star rating simply because it's not everyone's cup of tea. But if you enjoy this kind of games, don't miss Pulsen!
