Penumbra: Requiem

Rating: 3.9 (63 votes cast)

Penumbra Requiem requires Penumbra: Black Plague

Requiem will tie up loose ends from previous installments and as Philip progresses he will encounter various characters from his past. Penumbra: Requiem delves deeper into the world of the Tuurngait infection and personalities from the previous two games, Overture and Black Plague. Long lost friends will return and aid Philip on his quest, but can they really be trusted?

In the bizarre world of Penumbra: Requiem players will experience another psychological thrill on a level unheard of before Penumbra: Black Plague. This time telling what is real and what is not will be even harder and not always trusting your senses will be essential in order to survive.

Penumbra Requiem includes many new levels to explore, old friends from previous games, highly interactive physics puzzles and a scary and disturbing atmosphere unprecedented in any other game.

Penumbra

Requiem takes a step away from what the Penumbra series normaly stand for. The "Scares" are near to none. They are there but they are not as "in your face" as we're used to. It does take away alot of the feeling of being scared all the time when you have to solve puzzels on and off. But with that said Penumbra: Reqiuem is a very good game and extreamly well done for such a small company as Frictional Games. I do look forward to all of their releases in the future

Penumbra: Requiem review

I've been following Frictional games since I discovered the Penumbra "tech demo" in 2006. I was eager to play their first published game and wasn't disappointed, despite frustrations with the game's control system and physics. With the Requiem they added a even more surreal touch to the gameplay and atmosphere, and I enjoyed this. One aspect I enjoyed most of all was the few opportunities to go a different way and the addition of the auto-placement of items. This greatly improved an otherwise cumbersome interface.

Though not nearly as frigtening as its predecessors, Penumbra: Requiem is more of a bad version of portal, right down to the point that it has a robot female voice who talks to you throughout the different levels, which are puzzles. The only thing about this is that she is not funny. The graphics are pretty much the same as Black Plague, and so is the gameplay, but the fear that was there in the previous two simply isn't anymore.

This is a game more dedicated to puzzles than it is to fear. It is quite simply, not very scary although it does have a few points which are slightly creepy. All around it is kind of fun to play with the physics and figure the puzzles out, even if it does not add a whole lot to the Penumbra story. If you are really big Penumbra fan or if you just like to solve physics puzzles you should get this game. If you want a game with an interesting story or that is scary then you should probably stay away.

If you want to enjoy Requiem, don't expect it to be like Overture or Black Plague, because it isn't. Requiem is a first person puzzle adventure and although the atmosphere is eerie, the game isn't survival horror as its predecessors.

The puzzles are mostly enjoyable, although they're not flawless. Also there is too much jumping and carrying boxes for my taste. Anyway, the script is good and the game offers a decent ending (or endings) to the series.

THe game has a unique blend to it, if you want an ending to peneumbra, and also like portal, than this is the pimp of those games.

Be warned, there are no enemies, but constant chatter from.... RED, Dr eminess, and a wrapping up of phillips fate.

Definately get if you are into penumbra.

The script is beautiful, and the puzzles perfect.
