Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
The original Puzzle Quest was such a great game. Although a linear storyline, it had the flexibility for you to do side quests, and progress on your own pace. Highly recommended for people who like bejeweled type games with an RPG twist.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
What happens if you cross a puzzle game with an RPG? You get the excellent Puzzle Quest : Challenge of the Warlords.
The RPG element has you guiding your character around the usual fantasy landscape, undertaking quests and fighting random monsters.
You can equip your character with various items and when you level up you can allocate points to different skills.
You can command your own citadel where you can research spells from captured monsters and make new items.
The puzzle element is used to fight the battles.
You have to match rows or columns of 3 symbols to build up resources (to cast spells) or directly attack the enemy. Each enemy has a different set of spells providing a variety of challenges.
The game is very addictive and makes you want to have more battle or gain one more level.

Bejeweled is addictive, but what if you add in some RPG elements? This gives you this even more addictive game. If you love puzzle games, this one is for you. If you love RPG, this one is also great. This beautiful mix of puzzle and RPG will steal you tons of hours before you even notice.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Bejeweled fans, this game is a must buy for you. One of the most addictive games i've played, once i started i couldn't stop playing.
It looks nice, the story is good and the actual gameplay is so much fun.
I couldn't recommend this game enough.
WOW ! This game is awesome
This game is literally awesome, I would say it is amazing.
The game graphics and sounds are really nice, the in-game music is enjoyable, and the story line is very good. The game provides wide variety of fighting methods that can be customized to a preferable mode of fight.
If you really like puzzle games but looking for something new and unique, then this game is for you !
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Addictive match 3 game, with a twist. Story, battles, quests, rpgish levelup system. And the gems looks like candy :) In my opinion, the best game in the series. Casual and addictive gameplay.
Pretty addictive!
Pretty fun match 3 puzzle game with some rpg elements. It started off as pretty addicting, however the endgame becomes a little tedious. Learning enemy spells and some other mechanics are also a lot more time-consuming than they should be. They learned from this one and the sequel fixes those mistakes.

Awesome time-eating game. Much more than the classical match-3 puzzles, I did appreciate the RPG features and the storyline which transform an otherwise boring puzzle in an addictive adventure.
Good graphics and great music.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
A good RPG / puzzle mix in a classic heroic fantasy world.
Easy to play and still quite addictive, this game is a good pick.
The game is now quite old (the first version come out in 2007) but is still very pleasant.
A Must Have!
Surprisingly addictive and well-thought game. Gameplay is nice and there are a lot of modes for additional fun. There are also classes and skills, so there is replayability. The game is very polished, and has nice graphics that are top notch in its own class - no 3d, but beautifully drawn pictures. I dare to say it's a masterpiece.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
The game that kick-started a genre. Puzzle Quest Took the RPG genre and added the addictive nature of puzzle games. The story is entertaining the game-play is challenging and fun. definitely recommend.
Surprisingly addictive. At one point, I played this so much I had a negative image of the puzzle board plastered on the inside of my eyes every time I closed them. The writing is tongue in cheek, and there's an absolutely staggering amount of content, though it does all large boil down o the match 3 or more philosophy. It does however come up with an impressive array of ways to mix things up, such as making puzzle oriented ones where you have to clear the board, or forging items where you need to fulfill color quotas, or training mounts, and so on.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Ahh, Puzzle Quest, I am awfully fond of you. It's the first big title in that curious genre that blends RPG-style leveling and questing with puzzle based battles (in this case, based in the Bejeweled match-3 format). There have been a number of similar games since, but none as good as this one.
Part of what thrusts this title into greatness is the depth and breadth of the experience on offer. The main battle mode offers an interesting tactical challenge, and layered on top of that is a whole ton of stuff to do. Travel, quest, buy items, make items, capture monsters and learn their skills, capture a monster and use it as a mount. Did you ever want your Paladin riding a giant scorpion? Who hasn't? The story may be generic fantasy nonsense, but it's handled with a wry humour that'll keep you looking forward to the next bit of dialogue.
A perfectly lovely game. Let it in and it'll joyously consume hours of your life like a hungry ogre.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Puzzle Quest combines puzzles and role playing and while at first glance it may be a mish-mash of genres. The fight sequences in the game take place in a puzzle format and the rest is a RPG.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
I love RPGs but with traditional ones, if I can't play for some time, it's difficult to get back in the story.
This game is perfect for short sessions, and the puzzle gameplay is very good. You can really take it in any time chunks you want. There are always more quests to keep you interested.
I don't give it 5 stars because of the not so good scenario, and the sound and music could have been more varied (graphics were fine though).
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Probably the only puzzle game on par with Galapagos.
The comparison may sound strange but what Galapagos lack in immersion, story, lenght and charater development, Puzzle quest lacks the graphics and interactivity.
If you ever want to gift a puzzle game, I d say Puzzle Quest for boys and Galapagos for girls.
The game is very accesible and dotated of a great game's life. If uou enjoy the multiplayer, you may not even need any other games anymore.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
A breakout game from 1st Playable Productions, Puzzle Quest blends the RPG and Puzzle genres in a new and interesting way.
The point and touch accessibility of the DS makes Puzzle Quest as easy to control on the DS as Bejeweled was on the PC. Touch a puzzle piece, move a puzzle piece. Easy as that. The only buttons used are the shoulder buttons, which flip the top and bottom screens.
Praise aside, there are two issues with the control. When checking the specifics of a spell in battle the 'help' button must be pressed first, then the spell selected. Occasionally, touching the help button would not register causing a spell to be used accidentally. Also, touching cities or towns on the overworld could be a little flaky. These two issues aside, Puzzle Quest's controls are flawless.
Puzzle Quest's gameplay feels comfortable and well known. It takes a lot from PopCap's Bejeweled and adds enough of its own to keep it very interesting.
The most notable advancement of this puzzle type is the battle taking place between your avatar and an opponent. In this, you match three like colored pieces to build red, blue, green and yellow mana. Additionally, there are purple experience pieces, gold coin pieces, and skulls that deal direct damage. Mana is spent to cast spells that affect the board in drastic or minor ways. This could be as small as destroying a single puzzle piece, destroying a three by three of the board, or changing every yellow piece on the board to a purple experience piece before absorbing every bit of it for yourself. Each of the games four classes gain different abilities as the level, each with their own dependencies on certain colors of mana and strengths and weaknesses as a class.
Along with gaining their own class specific spells, enemies can also be captured. To do this, you must complete a different type of puzzle where there are a finite amount of pieces on the board and they must be matched in a pattern where none are left on the board at the end. Some captured enemies, such as spiders, griffins or giant rats can be used as a mount and grant you an additional spell and stat improvements. Stat improvements increase with a mounts level, which increases with puzzle battles with timed turns. Most captured enemies allow you to gain their main spell by completing a yet different type of puzzle. You face a full board with the goal of matching a minimum amount of red, blue, green, yellow, skull, and scroll pieces. The scroll pieces exist only in this puzzle type and they are not created until 4 or more of any piece is matched. This is before at least three must be matched together.
Needless to say, there is a lot to keep completionists playing this game for a long time. This combination of chance and old fashioned brain sweat in each puzzle type keep pulling on you to come back even after the main story is finished. Add the fantasy saturated humor with the puzzle/RPG combination and you have yourself a stand out game that shines just as hard for its genre blending as well as its distinct gameplay.
Puzzle Quest is truly a joy to play for anyone who likes role-playing games but doesn't have the time they used to have. Of course, some may also say you need to like puzzle games as well, but you don't. I am a huge hater on puzzle games and I have always hated RPGs and action games that through puzzles in the mix.
Puzzle Quest is different - it is not a puzzle game in my mind. It is an RPG where your fights are played on a game board, with a simple puzzle/tile scheeme. The simplicity of the puzzle itself allows one to form a whole host of strategies. These strategies you create are enhanced and based off of the decisions you make while spending your level up points.
Puzzle Quest offers a semi-open world lay-out, 4 different classes with several build possibilities within each class, and a loot system. The loot is the only short coming for me, simply because it is not as robust as many RPGs. But the somehow, the game play makes Puzzle Quest one of the highest value games I've ever purchased - just absurdly addictive. Even my girlfriend, who doesn't play games, love her some Puzzle Quest.
Buy it!
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
A great game for anyone who likes logic puzzles. The RPG element (leveling your character) only adds to the coolness factor. The visuals may not be stunning, but they are very neat and the fit the theme nicely. The music is okay, except battle sequences, when it is just awesome.
The only gripe (albeit a little one) I have with this game is that there is one clear optimal way to complete it, regardless of the character class you choose. Of course you can challenge yourself and try to beat the game differently, but that would just be shooting your own knee for the challenge's sake.
Fun and addictive game. Simple rules yet keep challenging. Difficulty is perfect. Graphic is clear and fit the atmosphere. Sound is Ok. Story is..well..traditional and give no surprise. Unfortunately, it is the best in the series, later games are not as good as this one. A must have little gem. 4.5/5
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Very compelling puzzle game. Maybe you're thinking: how can a puzzle game be compelling? Indeed, Puzzle Quest is more than a simple Puzzle Game. Imagine to mix together RPG and fantasy elements, a story (ok, it's a streamlined one, but nevertheless it's a story), some strategy and nice graphics and you will have Puzzle Quest! Battles are resolved with bejeweled-like puzzles, involving many special abilities/spells triggered by the player using "mana"; you can replenish your mana pool simply pairing similar elements in rows or columns. Sounds simple? Yes, it is; but the game still requires some strategy and cunning. Your character will level up, obtaining new spells and abilities and becoming stronger; you will find many items and lot of foes. Puzzle Quest is the start of a new genre; and imitations like "Gyromancer" aren't worth your money, thrust me. Give it a try, nice game.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
It's easy to see why Puzzle Quest made such an impact when first released for Nintendo DS. At its core it is Bejeweled on steroids whereas RPG and story elements add an extra layer. Nevertheless, after the first couple of hours, gameplay becomes a bit repetetive. Nevertheless, you might easily return to the game for years to come once the craving once again gets the better of you.
All in all, Puzzle Quest is an innovative cross-over which deserves at least a try. Chances are that you'll like it.
Is nice to have a mix of a puzzle game and an RPG. Like everyone else says, is very addictive....
Try some of the mods. Some are quite good, some are interesting.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
I found this game to be enthralling at first, but beyond about 5 hours of play it started to feel overly repetitive. I also started to develop (possibly due to excessive paranoia) that the AI can actually see a row above the top of the screen due to the number of times it made moves that should have been suboptimal but turned out to be devastatingly powerful. The AI also seemed to be reluctant to make use of its spells (at least up to the point in the game where I got bored and stopped playing) which detracted from the feeling of satisfaction in winning a challenging match.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
This is really well done mixture of RPG + Puzzle(match-3). Just the problem is, this series has some bugs. I've played NDS & PC version of them, and NDS version had too many bugs, even frozen. PC version had less bugs, not too critical, however sound sync doesn't work well.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
Next Gen of Match 3! Beautiful mix of roleplaying and matching. Very long playtime, have spended loads of hours on this, and still havent finished it. Graphics is splendid and the music is epic. Very much recommended.
A really excellent game. Its basic premise is the 'match 3' style that you may have encountered in other games. However, it takes this basic premise and expands it in many ways:
It has a whole menagerie of RPG style stats, equipment, spells and character classes. There is a lengthy storyline, many foes to battle, capture and train as your mount. The world itself is actually more expansive than the game actually attempts to cover. I fully expect a sequel that will reveal more of the world and expand on an excellent game!
My greatest disappointments with the game are the rather restrictive spell sets for each character class. It restricts you to a few limited strategies. The puzzles for additional spells are often set to 'very hard' difficulty making obtaining them impractical. Also, one can fight a long battle and find oneself defeated by the puzzle board simply randomly dropping combinations into place for the opponent and causing a massive combo of damage.
Despite its flaws it remains an excellent and ultimately very enjoyable game to play. Recommended!
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords review
I have to say this is absolutely brilliant, a snap at around a tenner as well. Clean sharp graphics, brilliant score, loveable characters, engaging self-depreciating story...and depth a whole lot of strategic and tactical depth in 'battle'. One dissapointment is the multiplayer is relatively hard to access but i have been spoilt by the PSP version.
I would recommend this game to everyone, it is absolutely brilliant! Put it on very hard and set a time limit for a extra challenge!
