GAME SUMMARY

Europa Universalis 2

Rating: 4.3 (311 votes cast)

Europa Universalis II is the sequel to one of the greatest strategy games ever made - Europa Universalis. It invites you to a global struggle for supremacy from the dark times of Jeanne D'Arc to the flaming wars of Napoleon. As the leader of a country you have to guide domestic and foreign policies. Engage in religious struggles, set up expeditions to claim the New World, lead your country to prosperity and victory. Send your Privateers to roam the seven seas, muster mercenaries to bolster your defences, and send missionaries to convert infidels to your State Religion.

Interact with true historical events and persons to determine which path your nation will take in the game. The new game includes an elaborate and expanded system for diplomacy, trade, military might and development. It also includes new graphics, music, sound, manual and a new tutorial system to lower the learning curve.

  • Europa Universalis II features more than 180 countries; all of them are playable and annexable. The map has been expanded to include 120 new provinces for enjoyable playing. It also includes many non-European countries such as China, Great Zimbabwe and the Cherokees. The player can also easily design new countries and scenarios. The jewel of Europa Universalis II is the Grand Campaign starting in 1419 and ending in 1820.

  • Europa Universalis II gives the player more control. Will you centralize or decentralize the government? Will you force Mercantilism on your nation or allow Free Trade? Are your policies going to be conservative or radical? Are you going to Free your subjects or turn them into Serfs? By influencing the ten different policy areas you decide what road your country is taking. Do you want Scotland to become a great colonial power or Prussia to become a powerful naval power? The decision is yours, but be aware of the effects on the stability of your country when you change the social fabric in your country.

  • Europa Universalis II extends your bargaining power in war and peace. You can now strike trade agreements, crave military access or persuade your neighbour to commit to neutrality. Will you guarantee the territory of Savoy? And why not send France a warning giving you a Casus Belli if she turns aggressive? If things get hot you can always claim the throne of France. Will you claim the title 'Sole Defender of the Faith' and become first among equals?

  • Europa Universalis II adds the possibility to demand or offer any combination of provinces, gold and diplomatic agreements as a result of peace. As Turkey demand 1000 ducats, Sicily and the reinstitution of Granada as an independent country from Spain. As Napoleon why not vassalize Austria after your glorious victory at Austerlitz?

  • Europa Universalis II now expands history's greatest cause of war "Religion", introducing Hinduism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Cultural groups based on linguistic differences between peoples have also been introduced to portrait the difficulty with which one controls the subjects of another culture during different time periods.

  • Europa Universalis II features a brand new event engine that produces historical, random and special events. The event engine is designed to let the player create his own events making it very fun to build scenarios. Many of the events have multiple choices. Will you support the Lancaster or the York family during the War of the Roses? Will you build Versailles and be showered in Glory, increasing the power of Aristocracy? Or will you save France from the trembles of revolution? These are the decisions that you shall be challenged with in order to bring your country and people to prosperity.

  • Europa Universalis II can be played in a multitude of resolutions (from 800 x 600 to 1280 x 1024) and has a number of new units for the new playable countries and time-periods such as the Napoleonic era. A new musical score, which is a selection of the classical works from the period, has also been added.

  • Europa Universalis II has a completely new tutorial system which will lower the learning curve plus a totally rewritten manual with charts and tables to simplify the gaming experience for novice and advanced players alike.

Europa Universalis 2 was a real breakthrough in paradox game development. Finally you could choose more nations than just the powerhouses! It was also, I think, the most easy-to-learn hard-to-master paradox game excluding maybe Hearts of Iron II.

But now, it's glory passed, many mods died and most of the community moved on to Europa Universalis 3 and hardcore EU2 fanatics had FTG (before it died an unfortunate death).

Still, if you'd like to refresh the oldies, it's a good choice.

A classic, but nevertheless excellent game. One of the most encompassing and enthralling games of its kind, in my opinion! It manages to strike a good balance between respect of a thorough historical framework and a delighting game experience...

Should there be anyone out there who hasn't played this game, I strongly suggest they do.

This was THE game that brought me into the world of Paradox. While it may look dated today, EUII was fantastic when it was released. It has aged quite well, and the patching and updating was stellar.

The premise is simple: Pick any country and lead it to glory or perish while trying. The historical events add flavour and while some see them as a constraint, I'd have liked a lot more in later Paradox games. EUII was and is the pinnacle of Paradox achievement.

Best strategy game ever! This is the only game that I have ever played off and on for over two years. It has alot of re-playability. Initially you will try to master all the elements, then you will try to dominate and try different strategies. Almost every move you make has a consequence on how your game progresses. My only wish is that there was more of a building element to cities (ala Civilization) but otherwise this game beats Civ in many many ways.

A Paradox classic.

Lead the state of your choice through the latter half of the 2nd millennium. Choose an established power and expand it across the world or pick a tiny nation and attempt to survive. So many possibilities allow endless re-playability.

This is a great historical strategy game! My favorite point is that all countries over the world exist and are playable. This lets me feel befaviors of countries with affecting each other and exite. I think playing this game a few times will make anyone interested in history even if he or she does not like it. This game has such power and prize.

I don't really understand the hype around this or the other EU titles.

The diplomacy is very bare-bones, or at least I didn't find it any better than in, say Civ IV.

If you're playing a smaller state, it's pretty much game over once a major power declares war on you. Sure, that may be realistic, but is it fun to be steamrolled and not able to do anything about it?

And maybe I made a mistake before buying this one, but I thought it would be historically accurate. Without getting into details, the royal succession in England, for example, was totally ahistorical. I was hoping for the royal lineage to appear in the right order; unfortunately it didn't.

I recommend EUIII over this one.

A great bargain at $9.99. One of the longest games I have ever played with a fairly moderate learning curve. The only drawback is that it is eclipsed by EU3 in almost every way.

Good sequel to EU1, the precursor to all paradox titles that, nowadays, we consider so essential. Not many changes, though. If you are trying to save money and already know EU1, follow directly to something else, like EU3 or the original Victoria.

This game is very complex compared to your standard RTS, the idea is to take things slow, instead of rushing , building a huge army and declaring war on anyone you can.Graphically EU2 does the job and thats fine enough like the other Paradox games.

The soudtrack is huge ( over 2 hours ) with various musical styles wich changes over the course of the game. The sound effects mark the action.

The research aspect of the game is done via sliders in the budget. Overall EU2 is a great game !

Phenomenal game, a true classic, and one of the best paradox games there is. The sheer replayability in this game alone, has allowed me to put in thousands of hours, if any game has that 'just one more decade' kind of feel, it's Europa Universalis 2. I can surely say, this game stands the test of time.
