Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday review

This is a must have for grand strategy wargamers. No other game out there let's you fight WW2 to the same level of detail as Hearts of Iron. Manage a countries manpower, resources, politics, diplomacy and of course warfare. The game takes a long time to master but it has a solid tutorial system. This pack includes the original Hearts of Iron 2 game as well as the Doomsday addon which extends the timeline and leaves room for WW2. It also offers an alternative Cold War scenario.

Same opinion as I have for the expansion, masterpiece of a game. If you like Paradox's other games than this is a must. Only 4 stars because of the VERY steep learning curve. Prepare to set aside a work week just to learn how to play and fully understand this game. Not for the faint of heart.

This is the musthave add on for Hearts of Iron 2 owners. It combines the previous full game with Armageddon and adds a few things and options. The reenactment of the cold war gone hot is now a little bit more precise and if you re about to decide what Grand Strategy compilation to buy in order to spend a few lonely evenings, the Hearts of Iron 2 Anthology is my recommendation. The fact that the game does not stop in 1946 gives you the much needed time in order to conquer the world by a later date with still some considerable resistance at hand. I already stated in my HoI 2 review that HoI 2 in my opinion was Paradox`s greatest work to date and adding the add ons made the games only more enjoyable.

Continues to be a 6 out of 6 (with 6 being the best) and graphics not taken into account.

Doomsday is essetially HOI2 with Cold War Gone Hot-style scenarios where Americans and Soviets decided WW2 was not enough fun, plus a lot of tweaks to rebalance the original game for better enjoyment and less gamey exploitation. Try to get it in the big compendium of HOI2-DD-ARMA for maximum features and mod compatibility !

It's Hearts of Iron 2, except it lasts longer and has more content.

Need I say more?

If you enjoyed the base game you will certainly enjoy this.

I bought the game all as one so I dont know all the differences before the expansions. I do know that adding in the cold war is one of my favorite parts of this game I love duking it out with the Russians after the fall of Germany.

A great addition to the HoI franchise! If you loved the original Hearts of Iron II game then I highly recommend this expansion! It adds so much more to the game its like less like an expansion more like a whole new episode.

Great strategy game.

What if the third Reich invaded america?

What if england lost?

What if south africa took over mexico?

All of this is possible if you play it. Buy it if you like strategy!

This expansion is very fun to play with the new added gametime which now allows you to not only play through WW2 but also WW3 all in one game! Excellent game if your not into HoI3.

This is the first Paradox title I ever bought and still one of my favorites. A little complicated to get into but once you figure it out it's an amazing game with so much depth. I recommend this game to anyone who loves this era of history.

Although this game has been on the market for some time, it is still one of the best grand strategy games. This game truly delivers hours of gameplay and very little repetitiveness (you are in total control of the nation you choose to play). A game well worth the price. The only improvement is getting the Armageddon expansion.

Whole, vast, very longevous. These are the terms that include this inspired title, which expands the already excellent Hearts of Iron, without distorting it. Unfortunately, its extreme complexity relegates it to only a small group of fans, price to pay when you marry the strategic depth.

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday is simply HOI 2 with an expansion called Doomsday that adds in many new options that increase the number of scenarios, improve AI and gives you the new ability to spy other nations.

Combat in the game is where a vast improvement over the original HOI has taken place.Move to attack is now how its played instead of having your armies travel for weeks to the province thats right next to the one they are in then to do battle.Playing past 1948 is a real nice extra.

Great addition to an already decent game !

This game is definitely an improvement from vanilla HOI2 - four more years of gameplay, an excellent new scenario, AI improvement, bug fixes... This is the penultimate WWII strategy game. Only thing bad about it is the graphics, but they do not matter in strategy as grand as this.

By Boeregeneraal posted 18th August 2010

What a great game! This is my first HOI game...and to tell the truth I am hooked! Being a history student this game will keep me busy for hours and hours! I love how this game provides one with the ability to actually change history...what would have happened if the Japanse destroyed the US Navy Fleet at Pearl...well buy the game and find out!

Doomsday adds a number of new features, bug fixes, and a hefty improvement to the AI. The expanded timeline and changes make alternate history scenarios more viable and Doomsday improves the basic mechanics of HOI2 enough that any fan of the original should pick it up. That said, if you do not own the original HOI2 it would be better to buy HOI2 Complete and get both expansions.

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday review

By menorreo posted 16th July 2010

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday is still, some years after its release, a very good game.

The visuals are extremely simple, but its strenght lies in the freedom to choose ANY nation in the world and guide it during the middle years of the 20th century, through nazism, the second world war and the start of the cold war, not necessarily following the original path of history.

Because of this, every game will be different from the previous one. You can win the war with Germany, invading UK and even USA (not so difficult), but what about conquering half of the world with Spain or Brazil?

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday review

By VonBiddulph posted 15th July 2010

First of all, let me say that this expansion is extensive. It entirely transforms the game in terms of gameplay, AI and the additional timeline (an increase from 1947 to 1964) make it feel like you got your money's worth.

The gameplay has been improved in several aspects. Additional scenarios including a not-so-unbelievable WW3 taking place just after the division of Europe in 1945, more automation of the more mundane tasks and a scenario/game editor allow you to make numerous changes easily.

For example, I added more potential politicians in several countries, added new classes of ships and inserted pictures and statistics in only a few moments.

I encourage anyone who has not installed this on their HOI2 setup to do so, you will not regret it.

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday review

Before this game, I had already played other games from Paradox (EU2, Victoria). This one is very different: much shorter time period, a lot more options in the conduct of the war, new types of units. It's maybe my favorite now. Yes, the graphics are not so good, the learning curve is steep, but once you can put it all together, the depth is there.

I recommend to begin playing with big countries (Germany, Soviet Union, etc) to experiment, and then you can try something more difficult with smaller ones, trying to reach your own objectives.

Be careful, this game consumes a lot of playing time. Also, it is no more a problem now, but when I first played it, my computer was rather slow (Celeron 2GHz from 2003), and Hearts of Iron sometimes needs a lot of computing power. For example, when you increase the game speed and the game is nearing 1944, be patient if you have an old rig.

Doomsday is a slow fast paced game. When your at war, you will have to be very careful where you attack and what units you build but when your at peace, you will be doing a lot of waiting while preparing for war. There's also a surprising amount of detail for running your country yet at the same time its simple. Not for casual or impatient players. Word of advice, watch who you declare war on, the superpowers seem to have issues with you declaring war on almost everybody.

This game might look a little older but is still great, you tend to ignore the graphics after playing for a while. If you like WWII games or just love the era you might want to go for the third game but this one still holds it's own.

Best paradox game, ever. No question. It is so good, that I still haven't made the jump to HOI3. This is in my opinion the absolute best World War 2 simulation there is. This isn't just a war game, it is a simulation of everything that occurred prior and during WW2. Economy, manufacturing, combat...this game has it all. There are also a ton of mods that keep this game fresh (my favorite is The Stony Road).

My only complaint with the game, is it is a HUGE time sink. You completely get immersed and lose track of time.

Another King here. While it is not an RTS per-se like WarCraft or Warhammer. It is still a perfectly good strategy game. I got this two years ago, and still find enjoyment from it. Never will you play a scenario and get the same results. The Replay value on this is gold. And I mean it. This is definatly worth it.

This game deserves it's praise. The ability to pick and choose the tactics your army fights with is refreshing to say the least. Deciding whether to go submarines or carriers, human wave or blitzkrieg, atom bomb or V2. May seem slow at first, but once things start going they get going quickly.

This is quite simply the best WW2 strategy game ever made. It allows you to follow the timeline quite closely if you are so inclined, or go and convince the USA to join the Axis and help take over the world, your choice. The combat is in-depth and supprisingly intuitive for this style of game, and gives you the feeling of actually being in charge of a country's army.

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday review

This game is a free standing expansion to hearts of Iron II and is an upgrade to the games convoying systems and historical accuracy. The biggest part of the expansion is the ability to take control of any country when the 3rd world war breaks out in 1953 between the Soviet Union and pretty much the rest of the world. If you liked Hearts of Iron II then you will most likely love this add on.

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday review

By Will Lucky posted 30th May 2009

Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday is the expanded version on an already fantastic game.

Hearts of Iron 2 lets you play virtually any country during the WW2 era, may that be the United Kingdom, Germany all the way down to Tannu Tuva. It also allows you to win the game with any Nation. You want to rule the world with Germany? It's possible, you want to stop the Germans in 1939? It's also possible but both are challanging to do so.

The game grants you control over Politics, Production, Military and Intelligence. If used correctly you can gain massive advantages over your opponents. You can choose your ministers unless there in a protected position eg Head of State. You can produce forts, radar, infantry ect. You control all 3 branches of your nations military forces Army, Navy and Airforce. And you can use your nation intelligence to infiltrate and gain infomation on your nations to your advantage.

The Game also uses many Historical events to give the game flavour, such as the Munich Conference, Vichy France and VE Day.

Hearts of Iron 2 is a masterpiece built for hardcore strategy fans, there is something for anyone in there and is sure to bring years of entertainment.

This RTS is not for the faint of heart. The combat my not be perfect, but when you get in to the actual strategy of research and building the armies and facilities, there is nothing else like it. when you throw in the diplomacy options and the historical accuracy, along with the pure number of countries you can play, this game is freaking amazing. 5 stars.

By sinanuar01 posted 23rd February 2008

Once you learn to play it, No other RTS will ever feel the same. Fair warning, once you feel all its elements you start to look down upon other games.

Doomsday is the polar opposite of Electronic Arts games. Big on gameplay but lacking graphics. That said it doesn't matter because it is thrilling and full of unfathomed depth. Must have for any fan of world politics, history or stragedy.
