On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode Two review

Fun story, interesting characters and classic RPG mechanics. These elements make a RPG great, and Penny Arcade is certainly is a good one. The comical graphic and representation make the game look really good and stylish. The whole trilogy, with the third game from another developer, are all great games.

This episode successfully expands on the first, mostly in combat as well as story. While it gives a greater challenge in battles, it brings a more satisfying experience. The story continues its dark humourous theme, one of the things that make the game so good. If you played the first, you must play this one too, and even if you haven't, its worth a try

The second part of a trilogy of quirky and extremely imaginative games with a unique cast of characters.

The game starts shortly after the end of the first one and quickly throws you into a blend of relentless action and hilarious comedy. You can create and customize your own character or import it from the previous game. Importing also gives you an edge in combat as it's the only way to get a certain ally to aid you.

The quest itself will be familiar, with you, Gabe and Tycho battling yet another Lovecraftian abomination. The plot threads unresolved in the previous game continue here and provide us some closure, but the game itself ends with a major cliffhanger which annoyed me to no end when I played the game for the first time as it took many years for the third part to be released.

The gameplay is reminiscent of jRPGs with both your characters and the enemies remaining in the stationary positions during combat, which suits me just fine. My only gripe being, that perfect special attacks can be challenging to execute and if you're aiming to collect your overkills, they can be simply unforgiving to manage.

All in all, I consider "On the Rain-Slick…" series to be some of the best RPGs of the last decade and they should be played by everyone that doesn't expect too serious of an adventure.
