Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

Rating: 4.4 (40 votes cast)

In this action game the player takes on the role of 'The Stranger', a tough-as-nails bounty hunter who is part animal, part Clint Eastwood, who must somehow scrape together 20,000 'moolah' for a mysterious operation.

  • Use live ammo … literally: Collect eight unique types of “live” ammunition, including Chippunks, Fuzzles, Thudslugs, and Boombats! Upgrade your “live” ammo to increase the power and effectiveness of your arsenal.
  • Employ different gameplay strategies: Switch smoothly between first- and third-person action with touch of a button.
  • Play in first-person to take down your enemies: Take aim in first-person mode for an action-packed shooter experience with your trusty double-barreled crossbow. Customize your double-barreled crossbow with a plethora of ammo combinations. (That's right, a plethora.)
  • Play in third-person to get rewards: Subdue your bounties in third-person with melee attacks, including ramming and head-butting. Then, turn bounties in for moolah. You choose the bounties, allowing you to gather information on your quarry before going after ‘em with everything you’ve got.
  • Journey through living towns, lush forests, and massive industrial facilities: There’s plenty of room in the Oddworld universe for you to go about your mysterious business.
  • Converse with the locals: Use GameSpeak® technology to gather information vital to your mission.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath review

By kevpilot posted 5th April 2011

I've been enjoying this game. Thought it has locked up on me on occasion, I was able to get out using the task manager. I did not find the keyboard and mouse controls to be very good. However, if you have an Xbox 360 controller, the control scheme is good and works very well. I only wish they had given Munch's Oddysee a similar control scheme. I have heard other's complaining about Stranger's Wrath running poorly on their systems, on mine, a Core2 Q6700, with 4gbs, Nvidia 9600gtx running Windows XP, it ran fine and I noticed no slow down, or stuttering anywhere in the game. In some areas, though, there was a fluttering of the lighting effects that did not look right, but nothing I couldn't live with. Though I have been enjoying that game, I had to give it three stars since that game is very unfriendly towards the hearing impaired. There are no subtitles anywhere in the game except for the tutorial. Being hearing impaired myself, I had to depend on the goal screen to know what to know what to do next and even then occasionally guess work. Also I've been missing much of the games humor because of this as well. Overall a good buy if you can get by without subtitles. Also be aware that a lot of people on the internet have been reporting having trouble running the game on their systems, though I had no problems. Make sure that you have a card that can handle Openglide well and that you have Extension Limits turned off in your graphic settings.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath review

This is the first of title in the Oddworld series, that places your character on the top of the food chain. While Abe and Munch are more like Victims, Stranger is the Clint Eastwood Shootist Bad-Good-Guy, who uses everybody else, either as ammunition or as target.

The Oddworld is one of my most favorite places to be but Stranger with itīs FPS style manner take the experience to a whole new level.

And yes, since Oddworld is about story telling, there is a deep and twisted story, funny and gruesome at the same time. A real immersion into the experience that unfolds in a bit under 20hrs of gameplay.

You should take you time to enjoy the atmosphere, really! Since the Oddworld directly reacts on how you treat itīs inhabitants. If your nice, they are helpful. If you are mean, your reputation will be know across all cities. But Heck, itīs so much fun to be bad! Fortunately there is punishment AND reward for either play style.

Did I say FPS? Not quite. You can switch between 1st and 3rd person perspective. The latter works really well with exploring and jumping but is quite awkward when fighting, since the camera has issues. So itīs nice that the FPS-Mode delivers what it suggests perfectly.

The graphics are really nice, still. Gameplay mechanics and genre mixes between Action, Platformer and Puzzler work remarkably well, with only some slight issues (camera / navigation in 3rd P.). And Stranger is much more forgiving to mistakes than the 3 other Oddworld games. If you a have thing for strange humor this really is a unique game I can fully recommended.

Make my day!
