Oil Rush fun, not great!

By oshaylinux posted 8th March

pros: It's easy to get into. It works on Linux and Mac. It's pretty fun. No over barring anti-PC drms.

cons: It does not have much depth to it. No individual control over your units. I fine it od that you have to use the keyboard to rotate the camera but cant with the mouse.

Other thoughts: I was hoping the was an Age of Empire type game on water. It is somewhat, but fails to give the full control you find in AOE.

A game with great visuals, but a gameplay premise that's sadly not quite as good as it sounds. The idea of an RTS with limited control and a kind of mutual tower defense vibe sounded interesting, but to me it ended up without the tactics of an RTS game and without the highly addictive fun factor of a tower defense game. Plus, the game really shot itself in the foot with having such nice graphics and a cool aesthetic, then making the gameplay such that you spend 90% of the time looking at and giving orders from the tiny minimap.

Still, the game is functional and the difficulty level is pretty decent. There are some strategic choices to be made, and after getting stuck in stalemate at certain campaign missions I was able to break out by making better planned attacks and defenses. The game accomplishes everything it set out to do, it's just that the final product is lacking in the pure fun department for me. I hope the developers will reuse their engine for a more entertaining game, possibly in the same setting.

Four stars at 50% off. The campaign is sort of a "click through" but does introduce a lot of new weaponry after a slow start. But what makes this well worth $10 is the skirmish mode. A rather relaxed rts, where you can enjoy the scenery on easy mode rather than click yourself to death. Perhaps a sequel will have more depth, but again well worth the sale price. Hardcore rts players may find it too simple, but it's a nice ride for the price.

Overall the game is good. The game is essentially capture a structure build defensive towers and more units then attack the next building. There is a limited tech tree that you have to climb with each new battle in the late game you have to be more selective as you will not be able to research everything. I completed the entire game in about 10 hours on normal setting over a 2 day period. I thought the game should be a little longer I was surprised at how fast I finished it as I was only causually playing. finally, I appreiciate the fact that I did not run into any bugs that caused the game to freeze in any way even with all the eye candy maxed out. Overall the game is good a little short and a bit predictably but completely stable.
