ODD Society is a fun game that combines city-building and adventure, with a little bit of hack-and-slash thrown in for good measure. Runs without a hitch on Windows 7, but can't speak for any other OS.
It's a very simple game, at least in terms of learning to play, but because of the huge amount of resource collecting you need to do in order to build key structures, don't expect to complete it in a couple hours.
THE GOOD:
No permadeath. Believe me, with the camera angle problem (see below) this is a VERY good thing.
Unlike some characters, ODD Boy is smart enough not to commit suicide. This means that although it's hard to see where you're going, you can try and go there secure in the knowledge that at least ODD Boy isn't going to run merrily off a cliff.
The story's pretty good.
The graphics are fair; not mindblowingly realistic, but for a cartoony game like this, they don't have to be.
Instant health recovery. This one's just as well, since there's nothing you can eat, drink or wear that will increase your health in battle, and you don't have a Level Up option either (although you DO get to make some really neat weapons). However, if a fight's not going your way, just turn and scamper off a few yards and you'll be fully healed and ready to plunge back into the fray. (The bad news is that your enemies will be too, but never mind: maybe this time you can get the first hit in...and in this game, the guy who hits first is usually the guy who wins the fight).
THE BAD:
The camera angle has just two angles you can choose from, and - with the exception of a couple seconds' running on any route - neither of them are much good; you're either running toward the camera, or at a weird sideways angle to it. This means that you can't see any monsters before you run into them. It also makes it very difficult to find half the 'Find It' items.
The ending. I don't want to give away spoilers, so all I'll say is: after you've done all this for your ODD friends, you'd think they'd at least say 'Thank you', or something different from what they've been saying all game.
