Neverwinter Nights™ 2: Mask of the Betrayer review

keeping the good elements and adding something new, you can't ask much more than that for a expansion pack. MoB does both these two quite well. It is more challanging but after the original game, one should be ready for it. Despite some small annoyances, it is a successful expansion pack.

An excellent expansion expanding the game with more of the excellent combat and fun found in the original.

This expac was a big disappointment after playing the NWN2 campaign. The story line is just not as compelling, nor are the characters. I would've far rather had them continue the story along the Sword Coast with NPCs you had already come to know. It was also frustrating that I had to rebuild my character even after having exported from the original game. I was so much worried about details such as gear as having lost 4 levels and having to completely redistribute my skills and re-chose my classes. Kind of felt like starting all over, when what I was really looking for was a continuation of the story.

Possibly the best character-focused D&D game since Planescape: Torment. Just as in what may be the best Infinity Engine game, the game is much more focused on a personal mystery than saving the world, and exploring characters more than exploring mazes (not like there is a shortage of those either, it is not mutually exclusive). Very different in focus from the base game, and better than it by far because of it. While the first one had FUN characters, it suffered because of the game's pacing, and overabundance of content (that is a strange thing to say, but just like in Baldur's Gate 2, there was too much to do in the game, and unfortunately, unlike Baldur's Gate 2, you could not do most of it in whatever order you wanted. Shame, really). The expansion is better paced, with a very manageable amount of available content, and many ways to deal with it. The new game mechanics can be a little hard to get used to, particularly if one is not prepared, and the plot is extremely interesting. I consider this to be a very worthy addition to one's library, and even if the original campaign was bad (it is not, it is simply not all that interesting, but it is not really bad, it has interesting things, but it takes far too long to get to them), it would be instantly redeemed by this expansion.

Mask of the Betrayer is a story-centric role-playing game intended for very high level characters. The story picks up where the original Neverwinter Nights 2 campaign left off, but MotB has a darker, more mature tone than NWN2. The player rubs shoulders with beings of folklore and legend, each fully realized with plausible behavior and motivation. The plot unfolds through a series of separate strands that gradually combine to unravel the central mystery of the game. The pay-off comes not from surprise twists or climactic battles, but from following the plot's moral and philosophical implications to their conclusion. The game is respectful of the player's intelligence in a way that has rarely been seen in rpgs since Planescape Torment, raising thought-provoking themes while maintaining a compelling, well-paced storyline.

If Neverwinter Nights is a Gold game, then mask of the Betrayer makes it Platinum. Expanding upon the original in almost every possible way. You can port your character from the original game, and the level cap has been raised to a whopping 30, allowing you access to "epic" level spells and feats. Graphics are improved, and a whole new cast of interesting (and sometimes annoying) NPCs are added. While all these things are nice, where this game truly shines is the incredible story. Anyone familiar with planescape: Torment will know what I am talking about when I describe this story as both amazing and epic. If you liked neverwinter nights, you will love mask of the betrayer. If you didn't like Neverwinter Nights, you still might want to check this one out, just for the story.
