Not Up to Snuff

By UaSirideain posted 31st October 2012

Having just come off of Burnout: Paradise (Criterion's previous game), this game definitely leaves me wanting more.

There isn't the same variation in race types. The open world doesn't feel as open, often restricting you to a single given road at a time. Despite it's name, it's not as fast paced as Burnout Paradise either.

In a given Burnout "take-down" race, you would be expected to takedown upwards of 20 other racers, and that was just one facet of Burnout's gameplay. It puzzles me then, that in a game dedicated almost solely to taking down other racers, that they would step it down a notch.

The menu system is also utterly hopeless. The interface makes no distinction between silver medals and last place, leaving you to re-check every race just to see if you've completed it.

All this would probably lead you to believe that I think Hot Pursuit a terrible game, but there are moments where it shines. The tension felt while approaching a police roadblock, and the relief felt shortly thereafter when you make it though (or the crushing disappointment you feel as you slam into it), all help it to stand out from other racing games as something pretty unique. The driving itself is smooth, and the cars and tracks look nothing short of beautiful.

If you play a lot of racing games, you should get some interesting fun out of this game, but if you're not part of that crowd, you're probably better off sticking with Burnout: Paradise.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit is by far and away the most lackluster game I have played in the series. It seemingly tries to go back to the original Hot Pursuit games, giving you control of the most amazing cars in the world, and running from cops in them. It also lets you play as the police, which is a pretty nice novelty. But then the problems kick in, There is no customization to the cars other than the paint chips, the player cannot play in a windowed mode, and there are framerate issues that sometimes make the game unplayable. The good side of the game is that you get to experience driving the best cars the world has to offer, play with your friends online, and Race to your hearts content. For the money though, I would reccomend other games in the genre, like Test Drive Unlimited 2, and other Need For Speed Games.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit is Criterion's first attempt at bringing the Need For Speed license back into triple AA territory. The result is a very successful rejuvenation of a franchise that was in need of some new blood to complement that of Slightly Mad, who work on the Shift series.

In traditional Criterion fashion, Hot Pursuit is as much an action game as it is a racing game. Races and chases are fast and intense, and it all comes to life beautifully with a new engine built specially for this game. It really shows in the details, the lighting, the poly counts. This is definitely a marked improvement over Burnout Paradise.

I definitely recommend checking out Hot Pursuit. It's a worthy return of a subtitle long since used.

once again other reviewers have hit the bullet points, so i will just tell of my experiences. a very fun game, there are plenty of hours of speeding goodness packed in here. i liked playing as the cop less than the criminal but both had quite a few hair raising moments. i dont really like that theres no car tuning to speak of, but that would be a different game. it is truly a beautiful game, i dont know if its just me but driving games these days seem to be ahead of all other genreas except possibly sport in terms of realism, and even then it aint exactly rocket science to make a green field green.

note: you can plug this serial directly into origin and download through there.

Graphics wise this is a very good game and the amount of detail put into the making of the cars and their information is top notch. However, the game limits your ability to experience more than just basic racing. Unable to customize cars, choose your car for certain races (most which wont let you drive a certain car if it out-does the competition), and no story what so ever, you kinda loose a personal vibe with the game.

The ranking is a nice touch, 1-20 going up the ranks as both a cop and racer however it is limited to just that. Unlocking most of the unlockables within the first 5-10 ranks.

All in all, i wasnt really impressed compared to most wanted because as an RPG lover, I did not like being told what car to drive for certain races and everything practically being given to me for nothing. I wanted more say in what my cars looked like and being able to just run from the cops for hours like in previous games.

If your just looking for a basic racer, this will satisfy with great new cars and beautiful graphics. But if your looking for a more in depth racer where you can customize YOUR car and feel proud of what your driving, you should probably look elsewhere.

I was hesitant to buy this game simply because it was published by EA. However, when I first played this game, I was surprised of the vast improvement over previous NFS games such as Shift and Undercover. It is now not only enjoyable to be a cop, but challenging. I was not so crazy on the new weapon system, but the career mode makes up for it.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit is one of the best NFS I played until now. Moreover, is one of the best racing games I played on 2010.

Fast, furious and easy to learn, it can suit all audiences. And the fact we can play both as a racer and a cop is fantastic, and increases the experience provided by the game.

Strongly recommended. :)

NFS:HP is the newest in the NFS series, and not only the best of them, but quite possibly the best racing game of all time. The given duality of racers and cops is shown and played with expert precision and non-stop enjoyment and challenges. If all you want to do is race, you can do that. If you want to just bust speeders and play cop, you can do that too. There is no requirement to do both, you progress along either career as is suits you. Each event increases in difficulty and required performance, testing everything from your diving skills to tactical employment of weapons. The sheer size and volume of events and possibilities is nearly endless. More points are earned the better you do, advancing you even farther and into cooler rides. The great game-play is complemented by equally amazing graphics, beautifully showcasing Seacrest County and giving you plenty of scenery to distract you from your diving. A stellar game in all respects, NFs:HP is an essential for anyone interested in racing
