Master of Orion 3

"Space is big. Really big." So begins The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But like the void of space, there is a void in strategic space games. None have provided the bigness, that focus on the highest levels of grand strategy, that science-fiction epics in print, film, and television have long delivered. So, to the traditional "4-X" strategy game of eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate, we are adding an important new fifth "X," eXperience. (Yep, it's a 5-X game!) Through game devices adding character, story, and plot to familiar strategy play mechanics, MOO3 will deliver the grandeur and richness of an epic space opera — not in the guise of a traditional book, movie, or TV show, but presented in the medium of a game experience.

In MOO3, players assume the biggest role ever. No longer do players merely represent petty interplanetary dictators. In MOO3, players represent the controlling power behind an entire galactic civilization. The dictators, presidents, councils, and overlords that come and go are merely a player's pawns. One must use these governments and their leaders to secure the destiny of one's civilization and to manipulate its policies of freedom and oppression in both foreign and domestic arenas. It is not enough to be an able economist or a great captain to succeed in Master of Orion 3; considerable political, administrative, and espionage skills must be applied to craft your civilization's glorious chapter in the Annals of Time and Space.

Although MOO3 is a turn-based game and a player can do anything, he can't do everything. Only a limited amount of "Imperial Focus" is available to each player each turn, so players must manage the ultimate resource — their own direct involvement! Therefore, as players build empires, retaining able administrators becomes more important (as does watching their loyalty and ambition!). Growing an empire means growing a bureaucracy and citizens can resort to voting with their feet or their pitchforks if they're not properly led.

So it is up to players to provide direction and focus to drive their civilization to its goals. Left to its own devices, a civilization will slouch forward, but when properly led by a player, their destiny will be forever written in the stars...

Master of Orion 3 review

You can spend a lot of time hating on the makers of this game for straying so far from the original franchise. While it is a very different title the idea of the game was impressive at the core. They created a game the perfectly provided a macroscopic view of a major culture. I think sometimes you lack the ability to micro-manage the worlds as effectively as you might wish, but that's kind of what reality is all about. Consider all the laws that conflict between the federal government and the individual U.S. states. California and other states provide laws that legalize the use of drugs simple for medical purposes despite the federal governments position that they are an illegal substance that should not be distributed under any conditions. This MoO is different from the first two and what will be in the fourth (When it arrives - hopefully) but it is frankly the most realistic simulation of it's kind.

It's imperfections are partly the power that makes it's perspective as a Macroscopic simulation so incredibly effective. I have personally found that this game has an infinite replayability. It's a slow play, and works well with watching TV since there are no demands on specific timing until you tell it you're ready.

The macroscopic management style of this game is the reason you will buy and love this game. You will laugh at the haters, and bemoan the 180 ship limit in battle.

This game had HIGH expectations on it after Master of Orion 2.

Sadly it cant compete whit its predecessor and I would say biggest flaw in it would be that its not very user friendly at all.

You must let the game run most of your empire or else you sit tons minutes if you plan tweak everything yourself.

Its still playable yes, but cant be compared to Master of Orion 2 has to offer.

ok so right from the get go this game is HARD and the learning curve is very very steep......but stick with it and what you have is a stratagy game that will soak up those hours oif game play

Love the game. BUT due to the way gamersgate compresses files it is impossible to add any mods which is very disappointing. As you might know even the latest patch is years old and hasn't resolved most serious gameplay issues (yes, the game doesn't crash any more but ship sensors, shields etc. still don't work properly so what is the point in playing?). As it is the game is seriously unbalanced and as the developer went bust (and patch 1.26 never arrived) there will be no new official patches ever again. The company released the code of the game so that it can be modded to finish off the job (which has been done by moo3 online community) but those mods cannot be applied to moo3 bought via gamersgate!

Guys, I am SO not impressed! You sold me an unfinished decade old title that cannot be updated, for £17. How do I get a refund here?

I enjoy this game alot and dont understand why it gets a low rating. The learning curve is high but if your actually willing to learn how it works it is very immerse and addictive. I highly recommend it to those that are willing to enjoy a complex game.

Really a big dissapointment. I“m an absolute fan of the orions series, as also the galactic civilizations series. And I enjoyed all of them as good as they are, but when 5 years ago i tried MOO3 it was awful.

After all this time, i read a few reviews pointing that the game was complex but if you give it a try it finally gets at you. Again, another big lie!. I "tasted" this gain for about two weeks, and same weak points:

- You dont "feel" like you are controlling everything, cause the IA changes things as it wants.

- You have limited ways to see your "position" as a global one.

- Not inmersive, very complex, cause you don“t really know how is the economy "running"....

I really hate the game, and i really hate it more, cause it“s not even as good as Master of Orion I... (No le llega ni a la suela de los zapatos....).

Never buy it!

This game has gotten a bad wrap from the start. Is it complex? Yes. Is it a pain to learn? Yes! Did I spend a little time learning how to play this game? Yes! Just focus on a small game with your one system and learn from there. Get more systems and you can set up custom AI to run them for you. It is truely awesome. When I was finally done learning I played the heck out of this game. Love it to death and wanted to play it multi-player. But no one else I knew had the patience. I say if got time and 20 bucks give this game a try. Try it bites. Believe me it can be a lot of fun.
