Mirrors Edge

Rating: 4.2 (49 votes cast)

Once this city used to pulse with energy; dirty and dangerous, but alive and wonderful. Now it is something else. The changes came slowly at first. Most did not realize or did not care, and accepted them. They chose a comfortable life. Some didn’t… They became our clients.

In a city where information is heavily monitored, agile couriers called Runners transport sensitive data away from prying eyes. In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed, your sister has been framed and now you are being hunted.

You are a Runner called Faith - and this innovative first-person action-adventure is your story.

Mirror’s Edge™ delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast paced chases. With a never before seen sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith’s world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous.

Live or die? Soar or plummet? One thing is certain, in this city you will learn how to run.

From the makers of the groundbreaking Battlefield franchise, Mirror’s Edge is an action-adventure experience unlike any other.

Key Features:

  • Move yourself: String together an amazing arsenal of wall-runs, leaps, vaults and more, in fluid, acrobatic movements that turns every level of the urban environment to your advantage and salvation.
  • Immerse yourself: In first person every breath, every collision, every impact is acutely felt. Heights create real vertigo, movements flow naturally, collisions and bullet impacts create genuine fear and adrenaline.
  • Challenge yourself: Fight or flight. Your speed and agility allow you not only to evade, capture and perform daring escapes, but also to disable and disarm unwary opponents, in a mix of chase, puzzles, strategy and intense combat.
  • Free Yourself: Runner vision allows you to see the city as they do. See the flow. Rooftops become pathways and conduits, opportunities and escape routes. The flow is what keeps you running – what keeps you alive.

It may be from the makers of Battlefield, which at $5 i got it, It is no battlefield!

This is a frist person running puzzle game. The running while looking for the rigth path and getting the timing down at some points can be a little frustrating. The use of run hints telling you were to go are not over be and work well. If you want a change of pace this is a nice running, jumping, sliding, climbing game.

I give it 3.5/5

Really enjoyable atmosphere and gameplay but the story has sort of a weird flow to it. Each level is very well designed and flows perfectly, but the transition between these just feels off.

A unique game that I thought had an excellent control scheme. Moving around the city is fast, smooth, and great fun, with what may have been an excessive level of forgiveness for slip-ups. The flow of the game is occasionally broken by periods of standing around or hurting yourself while the game patiently waits for you to get the timing right or discover the right path, but I have found myself in many other games wishing they had Faith(the protagonist)'s ability to move around.

While the graphics aren't particularly high-tech, they do something I don't see in a lot of modern games, which is create an artistic feel rather than merely simulate an environment. It isn't just a jungle or bunch of dirt so much as a clean environment with some strategically placed, ascetic decor.

All in all, an excellent game with beautiful mechanics that can pause for breath where it should run.

Despite it's age, graphics are still good due to the fact that they went with a more cartoonish than realistic look.

Gameplay usually feels very fluent and it's fun to run and jump around on rooftops. There's the occasional frustrating part that made me curse the game. Then again, overcoming these is part of what makes games interesting.

What I really didn't like was the story. It's of the annoying "made for sequel"-kind that just stops halfway through. The end is pretty unrewarding and pointless.

The story missions are relatively short and can easily be finished in one weekend. Personally I thought the length was perfect. It didn't overstay its welcome and ended just before I got tired of the gameplay. There are timetrials and other game modes that offer replayability, if you are into that kind of thing.

Overall, Mirror's Edge is a well-made and innovative 3D platformer/parkour game. I'm not usually a fan of these kinds of games but it was entertaining for a few days. The score-hunting game-modes didn't appeal to me but the story-mode was fun enough.

Mirror's Edge is a game that requires patience. The controls take time to get used to and even when you think you have it nailed down, you slip and end up having to retry. The game is great when you're free-running without any hitches but when the action comes to a complete halt, which can come in the form of hitting a dead-end or missing a jump, it can be frustrating. I'd recommend this game as a chance of pace from the usual first-person adventure but it certainly could've been a little more refined.

Marvelous game! It truly captures the Parkour/espionage feel with excellence.

Graphics: Good... not quite the looker but it will do.

Gameplay: Superb, the game truly makes you feel like a real parkour courier.

Sound: Ok... serviceable I guess.

Overall a 4/5.

Mirror's Edge is not a great game, but it's an interesting one, and one that fans of puzzle platformers will probably appreciate.

First of all, the story is nonsense. It's not that it's hard to follow; what happens is clear enough, but WHY it happens and what any of it means was lost on me.

But I didn't buy this game for the story, so let's talk about the gameplay. It's pretty straightforward, actually: Mirror's Edge is essentially a modern puzzle platformer (e.g. the newer Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia games) rendered in first-person perspective. That may sound like a disaster, but for the most part it works. The control isn't bad, but it is a bit clumsy. Faith didn't always do quite what I wanted, and taking down armed opponents hand-to-hand can sometimes be aggravating due to the timing required.

Still, it's fun to run, jump and roll across rooftops and balconies, dodging gunfire and trying to spot your next avenue of escape before you run out of rooftop. Inertia plays an interesting role here - you can't stop on a dime in this game, and in fact, you'll need to take advantage of your momentum to clear certain obstacles.

The city itself has an interesting visual design, being stark white with a few splashes of color here and there. The main color you'll see is red, which is used to guide you to your next objective. This isn't as gaudy as it sounds - the constrasting strokes of red across the sleek white cityscape actually add to the atmosphere. You need to move fast in this game, and the red helps guide you on an instinctive level.

Overall, I enjoyed Mirror's Edge, but while it's an appealing concept and executed better than you'd expect, there's a lot of room for improvement. Check it out if you're in the mood for a different sort of action game.
