MIA (Mission in Asia) review

By Giles Habibula posted 26th April 2011

"MIA: Mission In Asia" is difficult to review. This is a budget shooter, and I normally enjoy budget shooters, and I enjoyed this one. But it could have been better. First off, there are only five levels. They are admittedly big levels with lots of objectives, and the scenery is nicely varied, but still, the game was short. They padded it by throwing wave after wave of enemies at you to keep you moving slow. The level design was actually pretty decent for a linear shooter. In fact, this game overall reminded me of another decent but short shooter called "Specnaz 2". Like that game, everything works well, and the game engine is decent (but dated). The shooting mechanics work as intended, and the shooting is actually pretty fun. The AI is dated as well, but that doesn't detract too much from the fun. The first two levels are "protect the fort" type battles, and for a while there, I thought the entire game was going to be defending stuff, which I hate. Fortunately, the later levels send you on actual "missions" of sorts, which play out with you against endless waves of bad guys. There is a story, but I wasn't following very closely. I probably got five hours of play from this game. Not a bad game, considering the constraints of the engine. Enjoyable, but don't expect anything other than a decent budget shooter. Three stars.
