GAME SUMMARY

Making History

Rating: 3.3 (48 votes cast)

Making History: The Calm & the Storm is a turn-based strategy game where players apply their strategic skills to set policy and determine the fate of their nation in a time of looming crisis. Each of the over 80 playable nations presents unique challenges based on political character, economic power, military strength, and geography. Players use diplomacy to forge alliances, declare war and negotiate peace. A dynamic world market allows players to buy and sell vital resources, offer foreign aid, or embargo other nations to further their own strategy. Research investments produce military and technological advancements that can mean the difference between victory and defeat in battle. Robust artificial intelligence and sophisticated systems offer a challenge in single player gameplay. Up to eight players can compete against each other in multiplayer games.

The game experience of Making History falls somewhere between "Axis & Allies" and "Civilization", with a dash of “Risk” thrown in. The goal of the game is not to replay history as it happened, but make your own. The historical starting points for each scenario set the scene; from there on players will experience completely open-ended, dynamic gameplay. Graphically, Making History is a "virtual board game", complete with hundreds of 3-D models instead of game pieces, and a beautiful, highly detailed map replacing the game board.

In addition to the six starting scenarios, the game comes complete with the Making History Editor, offering an array of tools to create modified scenarios. The editor is easy enough to use that players with no modding experience can try their hand at tweaking existing scenarios, and detailed enough that veteran modders can create complex new scenarios.

Addictive game. Simpel and fun. Each game you'll play can keep you busy for days.

The only minor thing is the AI. Enemy countries will not focus on reseach as much which makes it easier to win. Maybe a little bit too easy.

Making History ( the first one), has its roots in history education, and as such is a great introduction to the war history of nations. their strengths and weeknesses, and it just plays quite cleanly and fast. Hearts of Iron may be more polished grand war strategy comparision, but that title just has far too much going on for me.. and I lose myself in minutiae. The gameplay is not historically accurate, the AI is not the smartest on the block, but Its very fast to get started. .and once over a few learning curves.. is satisfying. Some games just strike you as ones you like. I like this and recommend it.

I initially bought this when it was $20 and I still considered it a solid buy then. It is perfect for a little light gaming when traveling or anytime you don't have access to a powerful rig - yet the visuals are still acceptable if not slightly appealing.

While it can't compare to game like the Hearts of Iron series, it doesn't try to. Casual gamers will like Making History and as far as I can tell and (this is confirmed from other forums) the original Making History plays and feels better than the follow up title Making History 2.

It's a good game. Its like a mix of Civ, Risk, and Hearts of Iron. One recommendation: if you do get it turn the difficulty up by at least 1 level, it gets a lot more interesting. Overall after playing it for 3 days I give it a 4.5/5. My initial experience was quite boring and easy but you MUST turn the difficulty up a little and learn to play, then it's addicting. Awesome graphics too (in my opinion), and it's moddable.
