Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

Rating: 3.8 (34 votes cast)

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world. When a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply he sparks an invasion that turns the country into a war zone. But for you, international crisis is all upside: You are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. You are not a soldier. You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfill the terms of the contract, no matter what. If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it. Play your own way, or play with the help of a friend in the new co-op multiplayer mode. And remember rule #1 for mercenaries: EVERYBODY PAYS.

Features:

  • Massively Open World – Play throughout the varied terrains of Venezuela that is larger than all the Mercenaries maps combined.
  • Co-op Multiplayer – Whether split-screen or online you no longer have to go it alone. Invite a friend to jump in and help you fight your way to the top.
  • Work for the Highest Bidder – You decide the factions to work for, when. From one-off pickup jobs to multi-objective missions, your choices will determine which faction wins the war.
  • New Toys – Over 130 vehicles from civilian cars to tanks and choppers plus all the destructive weaponry you can handle from pistols to rocket launchers.
  • Next Gen Destruction – Take down any building and see them crumble with fantastic effects – and they can be used to take out enemy forces and change the landscape of the battlefield
  •  …And More! – Build your own private military company with other military recruits, play above and through water, jump from hot zone to hot zone through captured drop zones.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames review

A very under-rated title.

Think of Mercs as Battlefield meets Grand Theft Auto. You travel an open world map taking contracts from various factions. They are usually at war with one another so by doing contracts for one you will anger another, making you choose which ones support you like better. Though you can do contracts for everyone, you just have to pay them off if you tick someone off.

The game's main focus is destruction. You can call down airstrikes, artillery, and vehicles whenever you like. This allows you to play however you like. You can hang back and pick off enemies with sniper rifles. Or maybe just order a tank and blast your way through, the choice is yours.

Quite possibly one of my favourite games, simply for the random destruction! Take revenge on the guy that shot you in the ass and refused to pay you.

This is a great coop experience game, I would have found it fairly dull and repetitive if it was not for the significant enjoyment that came from playing it with a friend. Due to the coop I rate the game 4 stars, if coop was lacking it would have only been 3 stars. I would have given the game 5 stars but there was a bug that caused me to lose my earned inventory from coop game session to game session.

If you like open world exploration, looting, destroying and pillaging this is the game for you. Do note the game is now only single player, EA turned off their servers for the game.

Here is hoping for a Mercs. 3, it would be a day one purchase for me.

This is a open end world game in the vane of "Just Cause" However this title has more of a story line.

This game is very fun but the only reason I bought it was because of the promised Coop multiplay. But there is no LAN option. You can only play on EA server and EA shut down the server as of March 2010. So no multi play at all! That sucks Thank you EA!

I really wish GG would be upfront about broken Multi play. I have bought games on here just for multiplay but were not supported so shame on GG for that!

Get this only if you are intrested in Single Play open end world kind of game. Fun for a while but you will burn out on it after a few hours.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames review

The game itself is "good", however it somehow lacks a purpose behind everything you do: be it mindlessly tearing asunder a village full of enemies or escaping by car from your foes it all feels somehow "bland" , like it lacks the thrill of it.

Graphics: good, nothing outstandig, but the game does surprise you here and there with some effects.

Sounds: pretty good, they do deliver the "oomph" effect you would be expecting from them.

Gameplay: This is where the game fails... in itself it is good, it just lacks "feel" so to say.

Overall a 3/5.

Mercenaries 2 is one of those games that is a ton of mindless destruction fun. But at the same time it suffers from stale acting, and a poor script. Luckily you'll be having too much fun destroying everything to notice.
