An amazing game. The RPG elements have declined since the first, but the storytelling in this game more than make up for it. This game holds possibly the best story I've every watched unfold in a video game.

Aside from the ending, which even with the free extended cut dlc, remains disappointing, Mass Effect 3 is a great game. High production values across the board and a surprisingly addictive co-op survival mode. The game has seen a tremendous amount of post release support in the form of patches, free co-op dlc and substantive single player dlc. Even months later the online community is still active. People will remember this game for a long time.

If you enjoyed Mass Effect 2, you can't go wrong with Mass Effect 3. The Origin requirement is bothersome but it's not annoying enough to justify missing the conclusion of the trilogy. I haven't actually finished the game yet so I can't comment on the complaints about the ending, but overall Mass Effect 3 is an outstanding experience. If you haven't played the first two games make sure to get those first because the game is more satisfying if you bring the same Shepard through the entire trilogy.

They just keep getting better

By kcrouse98 posted 22nd November 2012

It took me a while to get around to the Mass Effect series, but since I started I have been hooked. Each game keeps getting better. Mass Effect 3 feels familiar, but they have changed a few things so it is not the same old same old. I love the difficulty options they offer. You can play in a pure story mode removing all the difficult combat series if you just like the story. Then you can plan with the combat at different levels. This means that the game is accessible by everyone.

The story is great and the game is so cinematic that sometimes I forget I am playing a game. Characters from the past game make appearances throughout the game and as in the previous game decisions that you have made impact things that occur in this game. I am looking forward to going back through the games as the female character and making a different set of decisions to see how the game varies.

I recommend playing the previous two games, but I think you can jump into this game if you read up a bit on the others and enjoy it. I hope to continue to see games like this.

Mass effect 3 is a great finale of the mass effect trilogy. Excellent graphics and the story is great. New DLC is still being released now. It has more RPG element than mass effect 2. I enjoy the mulitplayer option. The ending seems to be controversial to some gamers, but I don't mind it at all. And gamersgate had it on sale 2 weeks ago at the best price I've seen. Great

Amazing, Polished piece of art

This game was fantastic start to finish. You won't feel the need to have to play the previous games, as everything is explained and easily understood in the beginning through intuitive methods. The gameplay itself is stunning and addictive. Missions that last close to an hour feel like minutes. The controls are responsive and simple to use, but offer more complexity for those who desire it. All in all, if you are a gamer and your PC can play this game, you have to buy it.

A very good game, but laking compared to its predecessors.

First off, if you are a fan of previous games in the series you should find this to be a very enjoyable game. While many of the social situations didn't have the same depth as previous games, the action sequence are probably the best in the series. The skill trees are now more complex, and with the new ability to customize armor and weapons you have the ability to get you character to fit any play style you choose. I did not play this game till after the additional ending dlc so I do not know if it fixes the problem people had with it. Personally I found the ending to be fine.

The multiplayer is actually fairly well done. I do feel that it would had been better if they saved these feature for another game in the mass effect universe. You can not help but feel that the single player would be more polished if the additional resources were not wasted on multiplayer.

All in all a fine end to the Mass Effect trilogy. I would recommend playing the previous games first.

Ahh, Mass Effect 3. This game has it all. Graphics: Excellent. Gameplay: Fantastic (refined from ME2). Sound: incredible. Story: really good till the end (thanks god they released a new ending). Multiplayer: A really nice surprise and I find me playing it from time to time.

To sum up, this game closes the trilogy and its an all around good game.

Great Game, If you liked both Mass Effect 1 and 2, you will like this one the gameplay is just as good as 2 with some RPG features that ME1 had that were taking out of 2, Multiplayer is surprisingly fun, with the new Extended Cut DLC the ending is not so bad.

There is something to be said for a company who puts the sheer detail into a game, nonetheless a trilogy, like Mass Effect 3. Everyone is mad about the ending, but I don't care. The fact that you are given so much pure entertainment along the way is worth it for me.

The tiny little details make this game what it is. If you focus only on the ending, you miss the big picture, IMO.

Mass Effect 3

By Sarkames posted 13th October 2012

All of the end-game controversy aside, i'm genuinely enthralled with this game and it gave me exactly what I expected after playing the first two installations of the series.

I'll list the cons first, since that's always easy to nitpick about a game;

1.) No native controller support, so i'm forced to use a keyboard+mouse for input, which is completely out of my element since I was born and raised as a controller user and use my Xbox 360 controller for most of my PC titles. After a quick search around the internet, I found out there're alternatives for controller use and there were a lot of uproarious potential buyers that refuse to play/buy the game for this reason alone, but I honestly don't care at all; the keyboard+mouse input works well in this game as it should.

2.) Lack of graphical assets to adjust. There're 2 options to adjust aside from resolution and brightness; dynamic shadows and anti-aliasing, but instead of sliders for anti-aliasing it gives you the option of on or off, both still showing significantly jagged edges and hardly a difference between the 2 choices, yet it does cut my FPS down 2-3 frames when it's on, so I would hope it's doing something visually.

3.) Particularly related to Origin, but still relevant to the game itself - Upon starting the game it can take upwards of 30-45 seconds to establish a connection to the EA servers for the game to even begin operation, then afterwards a lengthy (not always) wait for DLC to be verified, all of which is necessary for every launch of the game.

4.) Hitting spacebar is used for far too many controls, which may or may not be adjustable, but I got used to it after awhile and now I honestly don't care. When you think picking up an item would be something standardized, like 'E' and then realizing it's spacebar, and then taking cover with spacebar, and activating objects with spacebar, and rolling with spacebar, and running by holding spacebar, well.. it can create some clumsy moments. I've rolled a few times while trying to open doors in a hurry, but I can't say the cover system is unstable, as it does it's job.

That's it for cons, so I suppose i'll list a few general positive aspects of the game.

1.) Easy and intuitive cover system that's very safe and simple after becoming familiar with it. You can run into cover while holding spacebar and it'll snap into place on the available cover in front of you, and there's A LOT of cover in this game. Also, unlike some games i've played, it has a nice option to click the middle mouse button to move around the corners/edges of cover without stepping away from the cover and then getting back on the other side.

2.) Easy squad commands that keep the game immersive and without any pause in the action. Q and E place the teammates you've available in your squad in a designated area and the same 2 keys will use the equipped skill for whatever the corresponding teammate is if you have your reticule over an enemy. So I can use my hotkeys to engage in combat with my own skills and guns, while simultaneously and systematically ripping apart the opposition with my squad's skills.

3.) Low load times, even on my circa 2007 computer. Perhaps a small positive, but lately have I played many games with long and boring loading screens, whereas Mass Effect has it's traditionally low waiting times and impressive visuals between waits.

4.) Multiplayer. Standard implementation of most games, but certainly not for Mass Effect, and if you're anything like me, you've wanted some form of multiplayer since the first installment. Character customization, several characters to choose from and customisable equipment make for an enjoyable experience that was truly due for in this game.

Seems my review was more about technicalities than actual game-play, but anybody looking to get Mass Effect 3 already knows what they're getting, especially if they've played the previous installments. I understand the frustrations of the endgame and I can't say that affects my opinion about the game at all, as that's merely the end. Between multiplayer, a massive story, and the cheap price I bought this game at, I hardly have a reason to complain about anything, i'm just glad to finally have the third Mass Effect game.

I was really disappointed with ME3. I loved the first two games in the series, as they had a great story and atmosphere. I've heard a lot of complaints about the ending of ME3. I personally don't think it was a bad ending, but my problem is that the game as a whole seems... pointless. It feels like a lot of pointless grinding, for really no payoff. They also want to force you to play Multiplayer (I'd rather have had a better SP game than have MP) by making so your "war readiness" rating in the game (that affects the ending you get) will only ever be at 50%, even if you do every possible thing in SP.

It is a giant letdown overall. The only parts that were fun was combat.. And I don't play a trilogy for combat, I played for the story.

I expected this game to be alright and it came out alright, same issues that bothered me in the previous games return again, such as the not so great cover system which can become quite annoying especially in the coop while trying to revive team mates near cover. The overall legnth and game play mechanics also felt a little rushed, less dialogue tree options. Also some gripes I have with the layout of the story but I don't want to spoil anything. Multiplayer was totally rushed on there, levels are ripped straight from the SP campaign along with the weapons, and limited to 1 game mode, only 10 waves of horde survival each session

The nice touch in the game is the variety in the weapons, all the more fun when you use explosive weapons tto take advantage of the ragdolls :P

Its a nice game in general and any mass effect fan should buy this, people new to the series should give it a try, you may want to brush up a little on your mass effect history though if you decide to hop on the band wagon.

Mass Effect 3 review

As the third and concluding chapter of the epic Mass Effect series, ME3 was the most highly anticipated game for me, perhaps ever. Overall, it did not disappoint. The interface was subtly improved, the graphics were excellent, and the added action moves were great. The story was engaging and well written and I much prefer, like in the ME series, to have the PC with voice acting; it makes the character come alive for me. I too had a problem with the ending, but probably not for the reasons that most people did. My one or two complaints were that it felt too short and the rewards process (especially in terms of money) seemed a bit arbitrary and overly generous (was that because I started out with a high-level Shepard?). To recap, it was a still a great game, but could have been even better.

Mass Effect 3 review

By azarhal posted 25th March 2012

I might as well start with a bit of a controversy: I liked the ending!

I see ME3 as the ending of a story following the Heroes' Journey. We get the conclusion to Shepard's adventure, but with enough things left open for sequels to happens with a "clean" slate. The game in itself doesn't have a lot of choices though, because it wrap up most of the storylines started in the previous games: Krogan vs Salarian/Turian, Quarian vs Geth, Cerberus's agenda and activities, etc. You mostly see the impact of the choices you made in the previous games. Some are more minor than others, but others can have terrible consequences (Quarian vs Geth come to mind).

From the gameplay point-of-view, ME3 is an improved ME2 with a few ME1 features. Which make it look a bit strange. I'm not a fan of the new scanning, mostly because you only get popups out of it. I liked finding new place to explore in ME2 with that feature, but now all side quests are given to you by Admiral Hacket or Traynor (kind of like your "secretary").

The game also give more payoff, in term of character interaction, if you romanced someone. From the look of thing Liara get the share of the Lion here, she have a lot of scene and the longest romance scene of all the game. Although, I would have liked more Ash's interaction, but I guess BioWare focused elsewhere this time.

Finally, I said I liked the ending. I might have to explain this a bit [spoilers after this]. In my mind the only way to end Shepard's story was for him/her to sacrifice his/Her life to defeat the Reapers. That's what I got, so I'm happy with it. Although, I'm just as confused as anybody else about the Normandy...

Fun game, but has it's downsides

By Orijinal posted 7th March 2012

First and foremost, I must say that there have been major improvements from the second game in terms of combat. The combat is a lot more fun and you can actually modify weapons similar to how you would in the first Mass Effect game. However, the weapon mods mainly only affect the scope, magazine capacity, or damage. At least, from what I have so far that's what it seems like.

There is a new "weight" system implemented. It does not matter what character class you choose, you can use any weapons you want now. In fact, you can carry all 5 weapon types at the same time if you wanted to. There is a drawback though, the more weight you are carrying, the slower your active abilities recharge after use. I guess this was their way of balancing out being able to bring all 5 weapon types at once.

The game seems like a console port in that you cannot really change any of the graphical settings. The only thing you can toggle is Anti-Aliasing and Dynamic Shadows. It seems as though the game detects your hardware and chooses which settings are best for you. Also, gamepads do not work with this game and have personally tested it out myself.

The multiplayer is actually a lot of fun to play. However, what annoys me about it is that you do not have every character available to you from the beginning. I thought that maybe you would unlock other races by leveling up, but that is not the case. Mass Effect 3 has these things called "Packs" and have three tiers: Recruit, Veteran, and Spectre. These packs can be unlocked by using Credits, which are earned after each match. The Veteran and Spectre packs can be bought using actual money though. The Veteran Pack costs $1 (aka 80 Bioware Points) and the Spectre Pack costs $2 (aka 160 Bioware Points). You are not guaranteed to unlock a character when you buy a pack using either method. So far, I have gotten about 10 Recruit Packs, 2 Veteran Packs, and 1 Spectre Pack. I have only unlocked one other race, a Turian Sentinel. While the gameplay is fun, I really don't like how they are trying to milk ME3 for all the money they can by making the Veteran and Spectre Packs available to buy with cash.

The Day 1 DLC was OK. Although you are able to obtain a Prothean for your group, it honestly isn't worth the $10 it is advertised for in the Origin store. So far, it does not seem like having him onboard the Normandy would change much in terms of the storyline. You do get alternate costumes for everyone and a pretty sweet plasma rifle though.

Despite the whole "milking of the game for as much as they can", the game itself is really fun and I would recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed the Mass Effect series thus far and does not mind playing with a keyboard and mouse.

Had I been someone who played the series using a gamepad or felt that having every character available to play in the multiplayer was so important that not having the characters would hinder my enjoyment of the game, I would have rated this game lower. Before buying the game, please keep these details in mind so that you may better assess if you could enjoy this game despite these flaws.

Mass Effect 2 was a real step up for this franchise and ME3 does the same thing. The SP has depth, the gameplay is amazing and there is always plenty to do. This offering even has a MP side, I'll be honest and tell you I haven't played it yet I'm still in the SP but from the videos I've see it looks promising, this is a MUST OWN tho no matter what the MP is like...its just extra to me
