  • Digital soundtrack (12 tracks by Christian Gabel)

Krater is a squad based roleplaying game set in a colorful post-apocalyptic world. It combines the combat mechanics of action-rpgs with the top-down view of the classic old-school RPG and RTS games.

The game brings you far into the future of a post-apocalyptic Sweden. Once home to IKEA, Vikings and Minecraft, today its primitive inhabitants scavenge the broken overgrown world for technological artifacts.

At the rim of an impact site known as the Krater, three factions vie for control over the wound opening up into the world below. Consisting of an endless series of caves and tunnels filled with old world treasures and perils, the Underside stretches into the depths of the fallen Swedish civilization.

You arrive at the Krater with your team of freelancers to take part in the goldrush where people come back rich or don’t come back at all.

Key Features:

  • Unlimited Adventure - no matter how deep you crawl, there is always more to explore in an open game world where randomized dungeons and events are combined with more than 60 thoroughly designed locations and 200+ quests in order to create a vast gaming experience. Locations range from small settlements with a handful of struggling inhabitants to large urban areas like Solside City, a sprawling regional HUB where you’ll find all sorts of NPCs and services.
  • Uniquely Persistent Characters - watch your team of odd personalities evolve as they level up and gain new abilities, stat increases and equipment, but also...
  • Face the Consequences - your characters must cope with the dangers of Krater - if not they will face the threat of permanent injuries or even death.
  • Craft Everything - from items, weapons, and gear to the abilities and powers of your characters, you can craft it all with an extensive crafting system.
  • Co-op - Seamless blending of coop and singleplayer - use your characters to explore an open-ended game world in single player, either by following the main story campaign or just free-roaming the Krater (or a mix of both). You can at any time have your team join up with a friend to take on one of the challenging co-op dungeons. All the loot earned and progress made is kept regardless of game mode. And yes, your grinding efforts will be kept for the coming PvP expansion as well!
  • Living title - the game comes from a long test phase with weekly updates of the Steam build that has improved gameplay, added content or new features. This will continue even after release and you can expect free expansions that add or expand on game mechanics, locations, player characters and enemies.
  • Visual appearance: The game uses the DX11 API (but it also support DX10 hardware) to be able to use beautiful and varied environment and character art. The enemy units are not all simple texture variations on the same model, but sport unique meshes, animation sets and effects to a large extent.

NOTICE: Co-op - With the forthcoming coop content update (release date July 10) you will be able to seamlessly blend between the coop and a online singleplayer game - use your characters to explore an open-ended game world in single player, either by following the main story campaign or just free-roaming the Krater (or a mix of both). You can at any time have your team join up with a friend to take on one of the challenging co-op dungeons. All the loot earned and progress made is kept regardless of game mode. And yes, your grinding efforts that you play in the online single player mode prior to July 10 is kept for both the coop and future PvP expansion as well!

No mandatory connection to an online service - For those who rather stay clear of online gaming and enjoy playing through the campaign in offline mode there is a fully supported single player offline mode.

REVIEWS

What a pleasant surprise!

By deadering posted 10th May

My oh my was I pleasantly surprised with this little gem. As far as I could tell it was going to be completely mediocre based on all of the reviews but how wrong they were. What I got was an exceedingly charming, fun, and quite comedic little RPG. While at first I thought it would be simplistic, based on the skill system and 3 team limit, I could not have been more wrong. By getting new party members you get new skill options and the upgrade system is quite wonderful. Also the permanent affects of dying quite honestly thrill me. It adds a sense of danger to even a short dive into some enemy lairs. The overworld system is quite neat too.

At first this game feels like Torchlight meets classic Fallout, but you'll soon find it's much more than that. Any RPG fsns owe it to themselves to get this.

Krater is a fun RPG / dungeon crawler with a few interesting ides but gets fairly repetitive. It would be much better with co-op up but thankfully they are supposed to add it on July 10th. You might want to wait for them to add co-op before buying it, if you do decide to buy it now tho you shouldn't be disappointed.

Unlike what Critics say

By Leogin posted 23rd June 2012

While Krater received horrible critic reviews, it still stands as an impressive game with potential to become more than what it is on release, and it has. Reviewers not only failed to see the differences of the game to other titles like Diablo 3, they also failed to realize the development style the devs are using for the game. More along the line of Minecraft, Krater is constantly being patched and updated to meet their community's expectations and to counter any possible dislike of their game from the players. Admittedly, the game is released and is expected to contain a complete game.

Only 2 weeks since its release, the developers of Krater have already made the critic reviews obsolete. The game itself stands out with its squad mechanic and story line weaved along a colorful backdrop of a post apocalyptic Sweden. The best way to know if this game is for you is not to try it out.

Krater is a fun RPG with a quirky sense of humor. There is a little bit of a learning curve if you're used to games that let you pause and issue commands, but the combat mechanics are no harder than Dragon Age or Diablo. The way leveling is handled is an interesting new take on it, the loot is amusing, and the various dungeons are almost all randomized. Altogether, it keeps things entertaining - prepare to be sucked in for a while!

After playing for a bit in beta version of Krater I have mixed feelings. Overall, game is very nice, cool graphics, nice soundtrack. But on the other hand it's like a mix of few games:

-Diablo for it's maps and game style

-Arcanum for crafting

-World of Warcraft for item style, quests and overall feelings

But as I said, it's worth the money. I can't tell about online play because it's disabled, but I hope it will add more depth.

Having just finished Torchlight, and not keen on going with Diablo 3, I found this game mentionned somewhere and thought I'd give it a try.

First thing to note : this is NOT a Diablo-like hack and slash or a Dungeon-Siege III like Action RPG. The game it reminds me of most is the late 90's tactical RPG Freedom Force.

The graphics are charming, the world interesting, but from what I've played, don't expect the story to keep you going.

As for gameplay drawbacks : the controls can be fairly unresponsive, which given you CAN'T pause the game to issue orders (à la Baldur's Gate), combat can feel unfair.

Also note that coop isn't supported yet (mid-July, which seems, again, unfair to those who pre-ordered).

Krater Collectors Edition review

Krater is a game made by a swedish studio, that fact alone made me buy this game.

Krater is currently like a mixed bag of candy, you never know if next bite gonna be gonna sweet, sour or disguting.

Storywise they made me over and over not wanna care about the story/plot as it´s just... a very non inspiring story that feels very bland.

The game feels like it could used another month or two to finish some rough corners thats still in the game, so mabye Krater will turn into a better game in a month or so, but for now it´s what it is.

The most annoying thing currently in Krater is the camera and how often you have to change it around to actually see stuff as terrain wont fade because apperantly the devs wanted you to see its beutifull surroundings, which is looking great but it gets in the way to often for my liking. Also how you rotate the camera is done by the mousewheel (which cannot be rebound) and of top of this the camera have issues to follow team sometimes, not as bad as in the beta but still happens fair many times enough making you hammering the Space bar more times than you would want to do.

Not to mention the camera angle for me personally is rather annoying as I cannot see very far ahead even at max scrolled out as the combat is rather quick paced and lack of tactical pause button in offline mode which makes the combat get a bit to hectic when facing thougher enemies as you control a 3 man squad along with 9 abilites.

The combat feels lackluster and now after +8 hours my ears start to cringe over some of the abilites sounds as they just plain out in the end is very painfull to listen to.

Talking about Abilites dont expect to have a very many abilites in this game, You gonna get 2 for each member + 1 equip ability, and only the equip ability is the one changable. So you gonna end up using same skills over and over with no variety for a long time... And the abilites sure might get strong, but they still feel very lackluster. (yes that means you gonna have 9 abilties to use, which can become very hard to do in a effective manner)

Some postive things

The characters in krater is charming.

The crafting is fun element.

Thier way of leveling up characters is also a intressting aspect of the game I like.

Who dont like a sandbox which you can travel almost anywere on, but expect to get wiped if you travel to far away from your group ability to handle.

You have freedom in who to be in your squad leaving atleast some deeper tactic to the game.

Last word, dont alt tab down the game as currently it seems that doing so might cause the interface in game messed up making it almost impossible to play as everything seem to move to the right of the screen.

etc. "Loot all" will be outside the screen to the right of the window.

You have to restart game at that point making which makes you return to a outpost.

(this might be a personal for me, but keep it in mind if you deside to give this game a try, just dont expect it to be anywhere close to fallout 1-2)

Hard, Unique, Fun

Take hack and slash games, mix in a little rts elements and the humorous and colorful take on the post apocalyptic setting, seen in Borderlands and you get a true gem. Krater is an action rpg game where you control a team of three characters that come in the rpg flavors of Tank, DPS, Healer. The combat is hotkey based like in HnS games, but you have three characters that you can control and select as if you were playing an old RPG game like NWN or an rts game. While Krater does have many typical RPG elements it does not rely on leveling up. Since the game has perma death, your characters can and will most likely die, as this game is not easy. When a character dies you have to replace him, by hiring a new one. The characters can be improved with better weapons and implants. Most things can be crafted, but in my mind this is still a loot game. The setting is very nice. The game takes place around a giant crater in Sweden. The world looks great, thanks to the really nice and a bit cartoony graphics. From the graphics to the sound and Swedish humor the game has an undeniable charm. The devs have some ambitious plans for free post launch DLC, which is always nice. In July the will release the coop mode. This is a great game, and a breath of fresh air to those looking for a nice dungeon crawl but have already grown tired of Diablo 3 or waiting for Torchlight.

I have been playing this ever since pre-alpha, and it's extremely good, a diablo-esqe game with some elements of Fallout, the developers have been great in responding to the community comments in the beta and fixing it. I hope they continue this through past release. As long as the rest of the game lives up to the beta content it'll be fantastic and must buy.
