Enjoyable lightweight fantasy strategy

By Psyringe posted 23rd May 2012

This game is a standalone expansion to "King's Bounty: The Legend", and a spiritual successor of the "Heroes of Might and Magic" series. Personally, I found it more enjoyable than the later installments of said series (though it didn't manage to push Heroes of Might and Magic III off its throne). It stays close to the true and tested gameplay formula of its predecessors, but updates the graphics considerably. It offers exploration, epic turn-based battles, RPG elements (developing the heroes), and lots of different troops with unique abilities. The quests often include humorous elements, which may not be everybody's taste, but I found the game to be a good mixture of epic fantasy and light-hearted narrative. The main criticism I have about the game is that the AI isn't very smart - the game's difficulty is achieved by giving the AI bonuses in strength and numbers. The game therefore doesn't quite succeed as a serious strategy game, but it doesn't try to be one either.

A fantastic follow-up to "King's Bounty - The Legend"! This sequel tweaks the gameplay a bit, adds a pet dragon to help you out during battles, and later, gives you the ability to fly which makes moving around the map much easier than the first game. If you never played the first game, it is very similar to the "Heroes Of Might & Magic" games (in fact, "King's Bounty" was Jon Van Caneghem's predecessor to the HOMM series), where your hero moves from city to city, accepting quests and battling it out in turn based combat.

Takes the game of King's bounty: The Legend and continue on same great gameplay with another hero to control. Good questing system an large areas to explore! If you have played Heroes of Might and Magic this(King's Bounty) game is the one that laid the path for HoMM!

This is a very solid game that is like Heroes of Might and Magic without the city management aspects and one super hero. The translation isn't the best for some of the dialog, but the gameplay is fairly solid. The only thing I truly do not like is that the monsters you can control are randomly generated. Sometimes you'll get a very solid uber monster, other times you won't. The game also encourages you to play a real specific way early so you can get massive boosts to your leadership (a value for how many creatures you can control) that is real tricky. This can all be solved with some addons though if you like ore control over what you have.

A great stand alone expansion to Kings Bounty. Gameplay remains the same although you do get a pet dragon which is cool. Graphics are good and colourfull but its the music that is by far some of the best i have heard in a while. If you enjoyed the original then get this you wont be diaapointed.

Armored Princess continues in the vein of Legend, and does a good job at it. Not much has changed from the previous title, except some extra units and of course the dragon pet. If you've loved the previous game, you will love this one. If you're a fan of turn based games do not miss this game!

A game that's similar to the HoMM series, but different enough to avoid being a mere clone. I had good fun with it, though at a certain point it can start to get old. I'd recommend playing it in short bursts, to hold that time off for as long as possible.

This is the expansion or sequel of the original king's bounty, which is similar to HoMM expansion packs. You got new units and quests to do and if you enjoy the original ones, you will definately love this one. It's hard to find a game that's similar to HoMM for us lovers lol.

Stand alone explansion with it's own merits

Armored Princess is more like an expansion that a new game. It uses the same graphic motor as King Bounty: The legend, practically the same mechanic, changing the fury chest with a pet dragon with funny animations, and uses most of the locations of the first game. Probably you will feel that you're playing the same game or that they have cheated you.

I will strongly disagree. This game has a lot on it's own right. The storyline is magnificent, if you read the texts on the quests, also, the sense of humor continues to work well here. Moving around the map is a lot easier with your winged horse. The game is more clearer about where you have to go and to do what.

This is the best game 1c has ever made, at least in my opinion. If you like RPG or turn based strategy, you can't go wrong with Armored Princess. Give it a try.

This sequel carries forward the good features of previous one, and with difference which brings me surprise, such as using dragon pet, more different types of units and a more interesting story. Of course, the graphics is as good as previous one. I know that it can have 3D effect, but I haven't tried though.

Needless to say, buy it if you tried KBTL. If you are a fans of HoMM, it's also strongly recommended, it looks like HoMM but it's different and more fun.

"Sequel" to King's Bounty Legend and well worth the price if you liked the first game. It's pretty much more of the same, with a few different colors and units.

I think I prefer the little dragons over the box of the first game though. First he's cute and second he's a bit less annoying to manage. The story of Warrior Princess isn't going to win any literature prices, but it does the job at stringing you along the different environments an combat encounters.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess review

By Heretic777 posted 19th March 2012

So I just finished Armored Princess, 110 real time hours later. I played the original King's Bounty and loved it, so I bought this shortly after. That said, I think it was a bit much to jump straight from King's Bounty into the sequel, so it stayed mostly untouched for about two months and then one day I decided to give it another go - I was not disappointed. My advice, if you haven't played the original or if it's been about two months since you played the original, buy this game, you will not be disappointed.

If you like turn based strategy (think Heroes of Might and Magic), where you can also "cast" spells from outside the battle to buff your troops or hinder your enemies, then this is right up your street. In addition to the strategy, there is also an aspect of "leveling up" - as you win battles and gain experience, you can choose from a number of skills which make your troops better or give you more power to influence each battle. There are also tons of items you can pick up that help your troops, and unlike the original, they now have set items, so if you collect the full set you get an even bigger bonus - very cool.

The graphics are awesome and very smooth. Even when your horse becomes a Pegasus and you fly around the screen, I was really impressed with how smooth and stable it was. This has been one of the most stable games I have ever played, for example, I would be in the middle of a battle, would "Alt Tab" out to Skype with my mate and then go back into the game, no crash - ever!

The storyline was good (although not the best aspect of the game) and there are tons of sub quests so you really feel like you get your money's worth with this one. The difficulty is very good. I played it on hard and in the early and mid game there were certain battles I couldn't do and had to come back to later. I think they did a great job of keeping it challenging throughout - some of the bosses are brutal.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess review

By capelli king posted 24th January 2012

I only bought the game because i got it for free using my blue chips and there was the xmas sales on offer at the time. HOWEVER, King's Bounty was a huge surprise to me!

The game setup is free will mode and you are a princess fighting against the bad guys (although in theory you actually never fight, your minions and dragon do), you go around the map discovering new islands and completing little missions. The actual battle is turn mode and you move on a hexagon platform. There is quite a bit of strategy in the warfare as you need to pick the right moves at the right time + the dragon is a special "card" in the war as well.

The main plus of this game though it is easy to get into, easy to master and you do not need to "think" allot. Not that it makes the game unchallenging or anything like that, it is simply easy to play, which is unlike allot of the RPGs out there where it takes you hours to understand and then when you do, you cannot simply come back in a couple of months later and "know" what is going on.

The extremely underrated King's Bounty series has seemed to have found its niche in the world of Download Game Sales rather than the retail world, but that doesn't mean you should overlook it. A wonderful, funny spin on the Heroes of Might and Magic formula, this game is a real time-sink of world map exploration, challenging battles, army upkeep and strategy.

If you already have the original King's Bounty, this is much the same, so only pick up Armored Princess if you want a largely unimproved rehash. But if, like me, you loved the original and want more, this should be next on your list!

A therapeutic experience

This is an incredibly soothing game, the "candy" graphics fit very well with the not-so-serious fantasy stylings the developers sought. The quality of the writing is neglibile, but it is easy to skip all that and simply enjoy the timeless pleasures of leveling and looting. I would have thought that Heroes VI would render KB obsolete, but I was wrong: this is less massive and less serious than Heroes, and it still has a place in my gaming schedule.

I have a laptop computer with a Performance Index of 3.9 with an ATI Radeon™ HD 4250 graphics card (AMD M880G chipset). This is not a computer that is built for heavy gaming and has issues with games that require "Shader." King's Bounty: The Legend worked on my computer but I would have to wait a minute or two after opening it to get rid of some flickering and would play on the lowest graphics resolution.

With King's Bounty: Armored Princess, the designer ingeniously managed to lower the graphic requirements (where most games increase the requirements from product to product). There is no flickering and I can now play on high graphics settings.

- Combat is turn based and this is a game for strategy lovers.

- I have not noticed any glitches or bugs and have played this game for about a month now.

- Items are randomly distributed in every new game (as well as many monsters and troops for hire) which lends itself to great replay-ability.

- While there will be many familiar troops from King's Bounty: The Legend, many of the old troops have additional skills and there are many new troops as well.

- Your hero starts with two slots for reserve troops which is really nice(in "The Legend" you needed unlock these slots)

- Enemy ships will now attempt to attack you if you get close to them. I found it unrealistic in "The Legend" that they would ignore your presence.

- Quickly travel from area to area using fast travel. No hiking across maps back and forth to go from area to area.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess embodies what I loved about "The Legend" and then improves upon it in many different ways. A perfect example of what the next sequel in a series should be: keep the best of the old version while removing annoyances and adding exciting new features.

Graphics: Similar to the previous game in the series, King's Bounty: the Legend, the game has beyond passable graphics. Throw in the cute baby dragon sidekick for extra points. 8/10

Sound: Really excellent music. The voices and sound effects are so-so, but the music? Top notch. 9/10

Gameplay: The gameplay stems from a lineage of similar gameplay seen from the original king's Bounty, through a series of Heroes of Might and Magic games, into the KB:tL reboot, and now here. You travel a map recruiting units, set them up on a hexagonal grid during combat, and give them orders related to killing enemies who are also on the hexagonal grid. You can also cast various spells, summon magical units, and tell your baby dragon sidekick to use its own abilities. As you level and gain experience, you can gain new skills in three trees of development, as well as improving those of your baby dragon as it also levels. Overall, very fun but with a challenging skill curve past the first area. 8/10

Feel: The game has a high fantasy RPG feel with cartoonish graphics, ala WoW. It doesn't have enough grit to really be immersive, nor is the hexagonal grid or gameplay fiery enough to really get your adrenaline going. Overall, this gives the game a sedate feel that I could take or leave. 6/10

Value: It may be better to get this game in a pack that includes either Crossworlds, the Legend, or both. 5/10

Overall: The game was worth the purchase, and has good replay value with the three classes and various skills you are able to choose from. While not riveting, the gameplay is definitely enjoyable and the world is endearing (especially the baby dragon).

7.2/10

The detailed graphic and the sound are one of the best RPG games. Further, if your PC & video card can support 3D games, you better try since King's Bounty supports 3D game.

The story line is OK and the characters are various. Each character has different features but the large one is better so, keep more dragons if you can. The battle system is based on chess-styled playground and depending on your allocation, you can save large number of your armies.

Overall, I evaluate 8.5 out of 10.

It's a decent RPG-adventure game and I recommend you to try either demo version or with occasional discounted offer.

Great addictive turn-based strategy, nice graphics and music. It gradually reveals new locations and leaves enough freedom to decide where to go and which quests to take. You may need to avoid strong enemies until you build up your skills, but it is not unreasonably difficult. The game always presents something interesting to pursue to make you want "just one more". Improved distant travel between locations. A lot of fun for those who love the genre.

A rather lovely ride about and turn-based fight game.

Good graphics, fun story, various units with different abilities.

It is possible to end up on island where you cant possibly win but you can sail away. Also when you are defeated you get some coin to restart your army. In theory you could slug it through but that would be tedious.

Overall very fun, didnt finish yet. Lots of play time.

I was playing this a while ago and forgot to post a review. This is very similar to the other KB game. A little more polished graphics and a somewhat deeper storyline. I really enjoyed this game. Made it through "Easy" in about 20 hours of play time. And I have started another on "Average", but picked up some new games and haven't gotten back to it. If you enjoy the RPG point and click fantasy games you will really like this one. Can be played over and over, might get boring after a couple rounds or if you're like me and keep getting new games you might only get through one. I can't find anything negative about the game, but you must like this genre to enjoy it.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess review

By Ufozile posted 4th November 2010

Like King's Bounty - The Legend, this is also a great game. It takes place several years after the previous game, and you get thrown right into the main quest, unlike in the Legend. In this game you play the grown up Princess Amilie as a warrior, paladin, or mage. Battle mechanics etc are just like KB:L and works really well. Battles can be short and easy, over in a minute or so, but can also be very hard and take many minutes of tactics. A popular challenge with the KB:AP players is to finish the game without any losses (of units), and then the battles may last very long.

One of the largest improvements from KB:L to KB:AP in my opinion was to remove the stat bonuses upon level up and put stat bonuses in the skill tree. This change make the game a whole less random. Because of this you can really plan your character and don't have to entierly go with the flow of the game. The skill tree has also been greatly improved; the different classes feel a lot more distinct now, especially paladin, (compared to KB:L). In addition to the improved skill tree, Armored Princess also have medals. Medals are bonuses you get, based on your playstyle, which is a nice touch.

Quest in this game are really good, and worth reading, even if they're long. There is a lot of humour and many weird people you meet. But even if you don't read most of the quests, you will have a good time because of the brilliant gameplay.

When you start the game, you get a pet dragon who will aid you in battle (instead of the Spirits of Rage in KB:L), with a set of different abilities. A big difference from KB:L is that you can easily travel from one end of the world to another. This means that you have more freedom in what army you use. In KB:L it was basicly Human->(Pirates)->Dwarves->Elves->(Demons)->Human/Elves. This means you can more easily choose an army more suitable for your class/build.

Ergo, King's Bounty - Armored Princess is a great game! Many gameplay improvements from King's Bounty - the Legend and a new exciting story.

Lastly, I just have to say that if you haven't played the Legend, you should play that one first. You can easily enjoy Armored Princess without playing the prequel, but it's a great game and I recommend it.

King's Bounty Armored Princess is the sequel to King's Bounty The Legend and it's a worthy addition to the series. More spells, a pet dragon that kicks ass, more bosses (six of them), more islands to explore equates to more fun. Really this is the pinnacle of tactical turn based strategy for me. I played the campaign through I believe 4 times, and at 30-40 hours of gaming per playthrough, that's sensational value. Lookout for the next installment in the series, King's Bounty Crossworlds, which is due out for download on Sep 17.

I was a little bit disappointed in the lack of new content, although there is a whole new race. I thought adding a unit or 2 to the existing races and a few new monsters would have gone a long way, in addition to a few new spells. But, for fans of Kings Bounty, this game is still pretty excellent. 4.5 stars.

A true gem in nearly every way. This series is going down as one of my all time favorites in the turn based strategy game genre. Graphics are fantastic, music isn't annoying, lots of strategy, story driven, and much much more. I found the first Kings Bounty to be a tad harder, but I wasn't able to beat this one in the end. I played a mage this time around, and had an easy time until the last two bosses. That may be my only complaint about the game. It was worth every penny.

If you enjoyed King's Bounty The Legend you'll love this. I thought the first game was exceptional, but I had many BOD's and some graphic artifacts that spoiled it for me. Not too much, as I still played it obsessively, but it did make it less enjoyable. So far I've played Armored Princess without a single crash. It's a lot more streamlined with clearer objectives and balanced very well. You have to play well to make it and obviously lose as few units as possible. Really, really good game.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess review

By mentalepsy posted 16th July 2010

If you haven't played The Legend, the King's Bounty games are essentially roleplaying adventures with turn-based tactical combat; think Sacred meets Heroes of Might & Magic.

Armored Princess is charming and addictive, and improves on The Legend in almost every way. A lot of small changes make AP more polished and interesting than The Legend, but the biggest is probably the more open-ended game world, complete with a larger variety of encounters that make the game feel less repetitive than The Legend. AP also features new and revised combat units, which give combat a bit more depth this time around.

Armored Princess is a LONG game - it will likely take dozens of hours to complete, and it can get a bit repetitive after a while. It's best played over time whenever you're in the mood, as opposed to trying to run a marathon and finish in a week or two - you'll probably run out of steam.

Bottom line: if you enjoyed King's Bounty: The Legend, Armored Princess should not disappoint you.

I greatly enjoyed playing King's Bounty: The Legend so I really looked forward to playing King's Bounty: Armored Princess. I enjoyed it just as much :) I liked the improvements it made, but I was definitely disappointed in the lack of availability of certain troops. The game is challenging (especially the final boss who, when playing a mage, is just about impossible!)

As a standalone sequel this game plays more like an expansion - the story isn't as developed (it requires you to have knowledge of the previous game) and it feels a bit short-changed in the end. They have some great little stories that could really go places (such as the pet dragon) but they're never expanded upon. I can only hope that there will be another game!

King's Bounty: Armored Princess review

By vahadar posted 6th May 2010

This is an improved version of KB The Legend, but a bit harder in all aspect. No more land roaming like in the Legend where you were just crushing ennemies after another, here you will need to carefully pick your fights, ... or die.

The difficulty curve wont forgive any mistakes you've done, like loosing too much troops after a battle, thus leading to spending much gold to get more soldiers, when gold is very difficult to gain at start.

But after level 15-20 (depending on your class, warrior is much more easier than playing a mage hero, while paladin is intermediate) you will be able to fight "invicible" ennemies easier.

Skills and powers are given by two means. Each time you level you get a certain amount of leadership (the more you have the more soldiers you can control), and talent runes (those are given related to your class). You get more might rune as a warrior, while more magic runes as a mage, then those runes can be spend to "buy" skills in one the the 3 class skill tree.

You have to carefully spend those talent runes because you'll never know how much you'll get on next level roll, even if you can find some talent runes while exploring map, or trading with a dwarf npc at some point in game (but very expensive).

Basically you arent really stuck to your class but since your class reflects the percentage of talent runes received, you'll never be as good as a warrior if as a mage you choose mostly warrior's skills.

I like the mage a lot. Even if weaker in term of leadership, so less soldiers controlled, but you can use powerfull spells to give you a clear battle advantage (like the phantom spell to make "decoys" to save your real troops from dying too much, the fear spell also very usefull against humanoid, and many others very usefull spells you will discover). You can also improve the power of your spells school (not only as a mage, but most probably since you'll get more magic runes) extending spell power, or how many rounds the spell will have effect and so on.

Some people think the mage is umbalanced because its offensive spells (like fireball and so on) are pretty weak compared to the damage inflicted by your troops or your pet dragon, that is true, but non combat spells really do make a difference (most of the time i win my battle without loosing any single troops thanks to those spells as a mage versus invicible or lethal ennemies, when at game start (read under lvl17) without those spells i was crushed all the time by such difficult ennemies)

A very good game, harder than KB The Legend, so if you want to discover what King's Bounty is, start with The Legend, the story will make more sense either.

Same interface and gameplay as the previous King's Bounty, but the game feels a lot more polished. A lot of 'broken' spells and units have been tweaked to fix them without making them totally useless. The badge system adds a nice dimension to the game and lets you accomplish something without having to wait for a level or runes. Finding troops is a lot easier now and you really can't have an 'unlucky' game where you don't find some basic unit.

Even things that weren't majorly overhauled are still a tiny bit different (more hp, lower leadership, etc), which makes playing the game feel a little like playing a new game where you are discovering things for the first time and less like an expansion. Its clear that they didn't just add new maps and fix 10 things and called it a day.

The screenshots don't actually portray what is actually going on all too well. The core of this game is turn based strategy with an overworld map where you can see opposing armies and decide to fight or run away. The overworld map is much like an RPG where you go to shops, find quests, and shop mostly for troops as well as items. The troop variety is great, though the shops have a limited supplies of troops so take too many loses and you may run out of a source for soldiers.

The game is fun and challenging, especially when you go for a 'no losses' challenge. This is difficult early on but even on impossible it is still feasible. The main characters roll is mostly bonus stats for the soldiers, a skill tree to improve those stats, and casting spells. She doesn't actually take place in battle, that part is solely for your soldiers.

I'm enjoying my purchase of this game very much. It's a nice soft blend of hardcore TBS with troop variety and management.

For those that played The Legend, this game will be relatively familiar territory. Travelling the world is much less cumbersome in Armored Princess (fast travel is unlocked earlier, and later your horse learns to fly), and there are several rewarding improvements to the character building system. Overall it's a wash: the mechanics are slightly better than the first, the flavor of the game slightly worse. It felt like the world and dialogue weren't given as much love as they were in the first game. The armorbearers are less interesting than the wives were, and the pet dragon feels like a downgrade after managing the spirits of rage with Bill Gilbert (although it is much cuter than any of them). However, these are minor complaints. I loved the first game, and I loved this competent sequel.

Many game reviews liken King's Bounty Armored Princess (and The Legend) to Heroes of Might and Magic. To be clear, though the games are similar, (Might and Magic bored this writer to tears and was uninstalled after 8 hours) Armored Princess is much more appealing on most fronts: aesthetics, gameplay and no irritating TBS/Action Points -- the hero can move freely -- dodging enemies and not.

The game receives 5/5 stars and is money well spent for those looking for a decent fantasy adventure RPG that is neither too hard nor too serious.

As for drawbacks, the text-based dialog will bore most audiophiles and is a bit difficult to read for the sight challanged. Otherwise, players can ignore most the text (not always) or conversely enjoy the subtly and fluffy quests that set the tone of the game.

May the KA series usher in more good, clean fun such as this. Albeit the game is not squeaky clean -- be it the desire demons or the Princess's response to chauvinistic comments from NPCs.

P.S. The King's Legend Bundle is a good buy. Consider playing The Legend first, the game will make more sense and be enjoyed all the more for its improvements over its predecessor.

Armored Princess cleans up and expands considerably on The Legend but manages to stumble over itself with a punishing difficulty curve and a few errors of its own that manage to pull the game down more than the improvements buoy it. It should come as no surprise that cheat codes to bolster Amalie are available on the game's main page, which may be the key to completing the game, even if it may not be entirely moral. While the difficulty should not scare away fans of the genre and anyone looking for a challenge, in the end it may be more suitable for someone new to the series. Someone preferring a more sedate pace may be best advised to check out the previous entry in the series.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess review

By joasoze posted 27th November 2009

Its been a year since the release of Kings Bounty and now the sequel Kings Bounty Armoured Princess is here.

Kings Bounty is a mix of Heroes of Might and Magic and a RPG game (yes, I know that its inspired by an old game called Kings Bounty that predates Heroes). In both Kings Bounty games you control a hero that preforms quests and explore land mainly by doing lots and lots of fighting. The fights are turnbased and a lot like in Heroes of Might and Magic. The fights are longer and more complex though, and thus more rewarding. You can play as a warrior, paladin or mage.

Slowly you get access to more and more areas to explore and there is a background story unfolding. I must say that I dont care much about reading all the text in the game and I mostly just read the part that says what I have to do. In the game you will find runes that you spend on a skill tree divided into magic, mind and might (related to mage, paladin and warrior).

What is new in Armoured Princess.

1. You now have a pet dragon instead of the box thingie in the first game. The do perform mostly the same, although the dragon is a very nice touch. He is extremely important in my game as a warrior and often do up to 50% of the killing.

2. In the quest descriptions there are now often picture of the offender that you (probably) have to kill. Great touch!

3. You can now have a follower that gives bonuses

4. You get rewards (medals) for different tasks (like 10 battles without a loss) and these gives bonuses as well

5. Travel between areas is easier, you no longer have to find a portal in the sea. Now you just bring up the travel map and click on destination. One strange thing is that the travel map and the normal ingame map is not connected and I was looking at the game map for a long time without finding out how to travel. I actually had to ask in the forum before the told me about a small button in the lower right corner of the game. Bad UI or I am getting old.

These new touches are all good in my opinion. Since I loved Kings Bounty, I strongly recommend that people buy Kings Bounty Armoured Princes (it is a stand alone game, not an upgrade). The graphics are great and the game is quality all around. My score is 9/10!

After playing Kings Bounty: The legend for weeks i was really looking forward to the expansion, and i was not disappointed.

For those of you who have not tried the first one, i recommend downloading the demo and getting familiar with the battle system and get a view on it, it is not for everyone, but i love the turn based set-up, since it gives you the option to be very tactical and think through each fight.

Hard to rate this without having The first kings bounty in mind, therefor i gave it 4 Stars.

It would have gotten 5, But the Story seemed to lack that something extra that the first one had.

But fear not, what it lacks in story it gives back in additional updates and reward systems.

Some Suggestions to beginners:

*Easy is no shame if you are new to this genre

*Press the Alt button the view turn order and health

*Take the Test at the start

Only a couple of hours into this game, released today, but already feeling the addictiveness that was KB The Legend. In terms of interface and troops, approx 80% of the content seems to be the same or similar with princess variation, maybe 20% new. All the adventuring lands are new. The dragon looks like he will work well as a rage entity, and the ability to pick your "type" of dragon at the start is a nice touch. A hint for old and new players - the tutorial section offered very early on is worth doing even for experiences KB players, due to the extra loot that can be picked up in the tutorial.

Nice start, "in medias res" - in the middle of the action. Taking the pulse of the drama of the ending of previous game. First thing is that you travel to another world. So there is sure enough lots of new areas to explore. Much is like in the original game - but with a much higher level cap, occasional flying abilities and a brand new pet dragon of your own (strategic) choice, there is sure much fun to be had! :-)
