The premise of the game is really interesting. You play as a Detective Chrys Liszt who investigate the murder at Nectarola soft drink company. But at the same time there's hidden dark past of your character waiting to be unfolded.

The art style is pretty charming, cartoon-ish style with vibrant colour and interesting characters. If you play Psychonauts, you will find similarity on both games.

Graphic is pretty good by 2008 standard, it hold well even for today standard. Doesn't not required monster hardware. But the downside is, it doesn't support 16:10 and anything higher than 1280x960.

The sound effect probably not the most amazing, but bear in mind that this game doesn't meant to be taken too serious. It suit the setting and cartoon-ish artstyle. But the dialog is really good. The characters are fully voiced and each one of them represent different kind of personality. So, you're not going to hear the same voice repeated all over again.

Gameplay is pretty straight forward and linear. There are 2 modes, shooting and detective. Let start with the latter. Detective mode is similar to other generic point and click game. Basically you need to talk with every character available and hot spot to gather clue, information and progress. There's no serious thinking puzzle. It just casual and simple puzzle. While the shooting mechanic is quite satisfying. You start with a pistol. But as you progress, you will unlcok different type of gun that can give you variety of option. You're not going to stuck with only one gun as different situation will prompt you to try different gun. There's no complex mechanic, you just shoot everything in your sight.

My gripe are the game use check point save. So, you need to complete the chapter as the game will only allow you to save at the end of each chapter. Check point save during in-game will not save your progress if you quit the game. Another thing, your main character prone to death even if you fall from not so high ground. I guess the game is scripted, it doesn't allow you to enter the area that you're not supposed to, in order to maintain the linearity. So there's only one way to approach your objective. The most disappointing thing is, when the game start to pick up it pace and began to unfolded the main story, it's already over. End of part 1 / 2. The game supposed to have 2 parts but the 2nd parts never materialized since the new publisher decided to abandon the series. Leaving the story unfinished, just like that.

Although, i hope someday there will be part 2. Maybe with much better graphic, gameplay, sounds that utilize modern hardware.

Part 3D platformer, part point & click adventure. Its action parts are a little repetitive, and the adventure puzzles aren't really as good as it could have been either. The end result is an odd game that really doesn't do well in either aspects. The only thing that's going in its favour is the humourous story and setting.

Bee game for a B movie

By mendel posted 5th Jan

Ever wanted to be in a world where the Chinese takeout delivers fried lice? Stick up stick insects? Partner up with a cigar-smoking roach and hunt the soda bomber?

This hard-boiled cop thriller is a B movie set in the world of insects: film noir gone to the bees. You'll be out solving crime and finding evidence (even on the desks of your co-workers) in adventure mode, and shoot it out with the bad guys in action mode. Neither is particularly difficult, but the writing and voice acting throughout give this whole thing a lot of character, despite the somewhat dated graphics. This definitely isn't an A title, but if the idea of playing through an interactive B-movie and bug humor appeal to you, you'll enjoy this bee game, as did I.

Summary: This is an adventure well suited for beginners, and it requires moderate coordination for the action scenes. The storyline is enjoyable at any age.

Does the word adorable mean anything? Well, to me is does. The game is set in the far future when human kind has de-evolved and bug (insect) kind has become the top from of life on earth. You are Chrys Liszt a rookie but street-harden cop in the insecticide (homicide) division. Your partner is a grizzled cop-roach (yes, I made a pun.) who's been shot more times than Jack Bauer. The story is a murder has happen at the cola company and it's your job to find the bad bug who swatted the guy (yes, more puns.) The game play is an action shooter with lite platforming. It's fast, fun, good. The game voice acting is top notch and sets the noir-esq mood very well. It feels like a good Pixar or Saturday morning cartoon actually. All and all, a fun little game that creates a fun world and never takes itself too seriously.

A bargain despite it's length.

Its a very short game only 8 chapters (3-4 hours) with each chapter alternating between 3rd person shooter/platformer and adventure/detective mode.

The game has a very Psychonauts feel, with a similar level of voice acting, music, cut scenes, graphic style, indeed it was developed by ex-Lucasarts employee's Just like Tim Shafers Psychonauts. Unfortunately the game is left half finished with 10 chapters from the original DS game not ported to PC (the second episode was cancelled).

Controls use WASD or arrow keys control scheme like most FPS/TPS games, but you cannot configure your own controls, (I had to use autohotkey to use keys I wanted).

3.5 stars from me.

I'm a huge fan of action games, and this game fits the bill for what I am looking for. It has smooth combat, memorable characters, and a well designed world. The game is only a few cents and worth the pick up for just about anyone.

Average action/adventure mixup. Altough I'm currently playing Batman: Arkham Asylum, which sets the bar stupidly high for these kind of games, I still could have a little fun with this, since the graphics aren't quite bad and the action by itself is reasonable, a bit above the "forgettable level".

The insect world is a bizarre and different step, when we compare it to traditional action adventurers, but it ends to be cohesive (in a strange way).

The adventure/detective part reminded me of a poor man's Monkey Island, with dialogs trying to be funny but too slow to lend some pace to the game. Also, the lip-syncing is terrible, but I would expect much more from this kind of game.

Conclusion: It's not a great game, by all means, but the 0.19€ price tag gives him a strange appeal because of the price/quality ratio.

An overlooked gem

By thealtkey posted 30th Dec 2011

Insecticide is a rather unique third-person adventure game that feels a bit like a cross between Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts, but with a greater emphasis on puzzle solving. It's not quite as polished as those two games, but what it offers is both similar and different enough to satisfy fans of either.

Okay, so it's not perfect. Some of the animations are a bit clunky and many of the puzzles aren't exactly fascinating, among other small gripes. But the real reason it's worth buying? This game is absolutely brimming with personality and charm. The characters are all very entertaining, the voice acting is way better than one might expect, and, best of all, the humor is genuinely funny. Again, it's no Psychonauts, but it's close enough.

If this kind of game interests you, then you ought to find Insecticide well worth your time and money.

Insecticide is a cute little adventure platformer. You take on the role of an investigator after a homicide (insecticide) in a world run by bugs. The game is split between adventure/point and click sequences and platforming sequences, and both work well enough. The graphics are pleasant to look at, although they aren't going to win any awards. The game also has a great sense of humor and really captures a film-noir feel with the mystery of the murder case. For the low price, I'd certainly recommend picking up the game.

Incomplete but good

By Dwagginz posted 27th Dec 2011

Insecticide only comes with Part 1 - Part 2 sadly never surfaced on PC. It's still about two or so hours long at a stretch, so considering the low price point, it's not actually that bad.

It's a hybrid of a point and click adventure game with an action one, both parts working fairly well. The puzzles are simplistic but do require a little bit of thinking or exploration, and the shooter aspect feels a little unforgiving and unbalanced, but still - they form a fairly interesting game. There's some really good humour and it has a Psychonauts-esque art style that looks surprisingly good even now.

If you can bear it being unfinished and a little unpolished, it's definitely worth getting just to experience it and to see what it could have been.

A story driven, adventure, platformer, shooter game. Story doesn't really go anywhere but the world and the characters are interesting, there is a certain touch of good humour, presented with good voice acting.

A game that has really good atmosphere and storyline and oozes cartoon noir. If you're an adventure gamer you'll be really pleased however if you're an action gamer than best to look elsewhere as the action is competent but otherwise uninspired.

My daughter plays this game like crazy. She doesn't understand all of it, but it keeps her entertained and laughs a lot while playing it. Definitely worth it if you have kids.

It's a very strange game this one. It's a cross between a point and click and an action shooter thing. The point and click is quite slow, but the humor is pretty nice throughout. However, you cannot continue a level half way through it, only at the beginning of it, and some are quite long, which is why it only gets a three. But then again, the price isn't exactly high.

Insecticide can't really, as other reviewers said, not "make up it's mind" about whether it's a platformer or an adventure game.

It is a fun game, mostly. It can get a little repetive sometimes though. But for the price it's worth a try.

Buy it, see if you like it, that's the best advice I've got. Just don't expect too much.

Not bad, but is very short. It should be much more longer. The game is not the best of the world, but it has some things that are not bad.

Insecticide is quite a good game, especially for the price. If you like titles such as Psychonauts or Beyond Good & Evil, you should have no problems enjoying this. :-)

The film-noir atmosphere is really good, and the characters are interesting. Camera can be a bit awkward in some places, but overall, the action sequences aren't too frustrating. If you're not appalled by the thought of playing as an insect, I'd say give it a go.
