Ironclads: Anglo-Russian War 1865 review
This game brings improvement over the other 'Ironclads' titles. It certainly is a good simulation of ironclad naval combat of the era depicted, the 100% realistic setting faithfully simulates ballistics and effects of weapons. As this fits my taste I love it, though it might turn others off to have ships shooting at each other for up to an hour and doing little damage. There are other settings however that can be played depending on taste.
The main drawback for me is the campaign. I get no sense of why I am fighting, or where I am fighting and to what end other than to destroy the enemy fleet. I don't even get to choose where my fleet goes and if I should engage the enemy or flee. Battles just start in the open ocean with fleets in visual range steaming towards each other.
As a tactical simulator of small ironclad squadrons in the open ocean with no weather or moral effects on the crew, this simulation is top notch. For all the bells and whistles of a campaign akin to Distant Guns or Jutland - there is a lot to be desired. Though if you want a fun single player only tactical ironclad combat simulator and aren't too worried about overall strategy, 15 USD is a fair price for what you get.
Ironclads: Anglo-Russian War 1865 review
A welcome improvement from the previous 'ironclads' titles. Still basically the same game, this one actually is in real-time instead of the previous turn-based combat seen on 'ironclads american civil war'. Also there is a slightly better campaing system when compared to the older title, you can buy and sell ships in a crude way.
This one is for those who like naval battle simulations. Casual gamers an strangers to the naval warfare genre will probably dislike this game.
