Horrible game

By loremaster3988 posted 7th May

Horrible game! Horrible graphics, horrible game play, horrible music. I bought this game based on all of the glowing reviews and I hate it. They say it's a "stealth" game. It's not! Stealth games are Thiefs, Hitman, Deus Ex, Splinter Cell, not this... joke of a game! This is just a mindless, boring, ugly game.

This game is a blast at times but at others it can be frustrating. Combat is pretty much one hit kill so you gotta be quick when taking enemies out and that is where the challenge is. Overall I am happy with purchasing it. Music in game is pretty awesome too.

Hotline miami is a great game. It is fast, brutal and interesting. Makes you mad sometimes over the fact that you died 30 times on the same floor, but it's just THAT good.

5/5 from me

So weird, but really good.

This game is hard to define. It's really fun and gruesome with old school sprites. You can run around killing someone with a drill, what more do you need? It's a top down game in the vein of Smash TV from 20 years ago. Worth every penny.

so strange.

this game is fast paced, and trial and error, but the respawns are so fast that it puts you in a trance. due to the incredible music, the wretched acts your character performs become a feverish addiction to perfect.

This game is as addicting as any. I played it through in two parts, and enjoyed almost every bit of it. The AI are kind of stupid at times, and some levels are frustrating as hell, but it's one of the greatest smaller games available.

Rating 4/5

Hotline Miami is a top-down, retro style shooter with frantic, violent gameplay, blocky graphics, a lite, off-beat story, and an amazing soundtrack.

The usual mission structure is 1) check your answering machine for message, 2) go to the location and wipe everyone out. Combat is a lot of fun, and consists of melee (stealth) and ranged fighting. There's a nice balance between the need for a plan, and fast reactions gameplay, and doors can be used to knock enemies over.

The game is difficult, to the point of an occasional rage quit, but you have infinite lives. There are also around 20 unlockable masks to choose from which bestow abilities on your character.

The only thing I did'nt like was that the mouse isn't as responsive as it should be. Not a major quibble, and definitely not enough to tarnish Hotline Miami's considerable merits. Recommended!

An amazing and addictive game, reminiscent of early GTA. A lovely violent smash of characters and weapons thrown together tastefully and beautifully.

Fast-paced Tactical Combat

By Xflasher posted 7th February

A good mix of retro looks with fast-paced tactical combat, great music and storytelling. The combat is fast-paced as you die in one hit and tactical as you need to improvise by using items around you to kill the enemies quickly before they kill you. Although, there is a wierd sway on the gameplay to make it look like an acid-trip which could make some people motion-sick.

Old- and New-School

By MetalAssassine posted 30th January

This game is the perfect fusion of old-school looks paired with new-school storytelling, combat and music. Very straight gameplay and the cool music make you want to play "just one more level" for hours and hours in a row!

Hotline Miami so far is a great, fast paced puzzle game. The gameplay is nice and has every feature you would want from it. However, after the latest patch, the game has high lag spikes which can cause the game to slow down to the point of being unplayable. Otherwise, I have enjoyed this game, and I am hoping that the game will be fixed in the update that is coming soon.

Don't let the old school graphics fool you. This game is intense. Simple yet so much fun. High Replay value as well. Glad I purchased it.

This game is really good. Some fast paced action, all though you will probably spend a minute before actually going and slaughtering everyone to figure out how you are going to do that, considering both the enemies and the player die in one shot/melee hit. Story is also pretty good allthough there is no voice acting. It reminds me a bit of Pulp Fiction and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Little Mistakes, But Oh So Great

By Keesmcqueen posted 24th December 2012

Amazing game that is only held back by some tiny mistakes. And maybe the violence and gore is a bit too much for some, but the quick and intense puzzle-action can grip you completely.

Cool and Unusual Punishment

By Andy117 posted 4th December 2012

A neon-soaked murder-fest with a surprising depth and nuance to be found underneath the notably gaudy visuals. It's utterly unique and wholly refreshing, its atmosphere of intensity and unease carried forth not just by trippy graphical effects and a pulsing soundtrack, but by gameplay which has you simultaneously impressed with your own murderous tendencies and freaked out by them. The game is a masterstroke, make no doubt, and I'd go so far as to say this is the best game of 2012. It's utterly fantastic. Only thing really wrong with it is that there isn't MORE of it.

Absolutely brilliant game, surefire candidate for game of the year next to The Walking Dead. The game is very well planned, mechanics unique, and the game itself is completely unique. Soundtrack is great and fits perfectly, and this incredible playability. As for the story at the beginning of it at all does not feel - I just perform some tasks masked guests. At one point, after a certain event, but I will not say what because I do not want to do spoilers, the game turns upside down and the story would normally dent in the seat or chair, depending on where we sit. Many may not like the pixel visuals, but to me it just did not bother and I think the graphics are very well matched. I would recommend to anyone, especially to players who like to play an independent and tactical game, because these species are undoubtedly the work.

This is one crazy, hard, screwed up game that'll keep you riveted for quite some time. You can even choose between stealth or shooting strategies.

Hotline Miami is a brutal, surreal, engrossing game...despite featuring very retro graphics. The fast-paced gameplay requires both quick reflexes as well as careful planning. Although it launched in a poor state, patches have been released regularly to fix up bugs.

One of the most intense and enthralling games I've played all year. Hotline Miami looks like a top-down Stealth/Action game but is much more than that. A well crafted hit-man tale, along with endlessly repayable levels and constant unlocks, allow Hotline Miami to go beyond most games.

On top of that there is a an absolute stellar soundtrack that provides wonderful background music to your massive slaughters.

Everything about Hotline Miami is amazing, I have no complaints. Buy it now, you won't regret it.

Hotline Miami review

Hotline Miami is sort of a stealth game, but one that's not really about sneaking, but more about running up and slamming your enemy in the face with a crowbar before he sees you.

There's a huge arsenal of both melee weapons (which are mostly silent) and guns (loud, attracts enemies and have limited ammo) strayed around each level. They're all fun to use, and you'll need to, because there's a Super Meat Boy level of challenge in the way that you're killed instantly in just one hit, and everything moves really fast, so you'll be dying a lot before figuring out the best way to clear the levels.

But while the challenging, super-fast gameplay is certainly a big part of the appeal of Hotline Miami, it is the music and the whole style of the game that make it a clear winner to me. There's a certain distasteful, in your face yet highly likeable 80's atmosphere and aesthetic to every part of the game, be it the pixelated graphics, the menu fonts or the aforementioned music.

The plotline presented in between levels is interesting enough, even though it is superficially straight out of a low-budget slasher film. You'll be asking yourself questions from the very beginning, such as: who are you, who are you working for - and why are you going on one murder spree after the other? It's enough to keep you going after finishing a tough level, ready to take another beating.

And take a beating you will. The game is tough, for sure, but if you're up to it, the game is more than worth its low asking price.

Awesome Soundtrack fast and fresh gameplay, one of the more interesting indie releases I've experienced lately. Animations on this aestheticly simple game are surprisingly good and entertaining! Game also provides a nice challenge so be prepared!

I've just completed this game. As other games by Cactus, it's completely insane and hallucinatory. Gameplay is truly fast paced but also gives space for some clever tactics. There's an amazing soundtrack and the whole pulp\hard boiled mood is very well nailed. Grab this one! Put your favorite plastic mask on, it's rampage time
