Hazen review

While its graphic is not that appealing, the gameplay makes up for it. Some of the level design and character concept are unique and combat mechanics is very easy to get use to. While the story is acceptable, it is rather predictable and cliche, but the fighting, looting, and epic battles make up for its flaws, those who enjoyed diablo like games should definitely get this game.

Once upon a time there was a RTS/Action-RPG hybrid known as Dimensity made by Daggergames. Why do I recall this game? Because Hazen, also made by Dimensity's makers, takes a lot from it. It could be said - Hazen is a Dimensity without RTS elements. Pure Action-RPG with a simple character development and many enemies to kill.

Our hero (nameless man) hasn't any typical RPG class. He can be developed in three ways - Melee Fighter, Mage and Archer. Character improvement is done by rising attributes and skill. There are three attributes - Strengh (increases damage (melee and ranged) and hit points), Inteligence (increases mana (power) and chance of critical hits with magic attacks) and Dexterity (increases visual and attack range, critical hits chance, attack (to hit chance)). Skills, all active, are grouped in three colums. Each of them can be used only with particular weapon. And so - melee skill works with melee weapons (swords, axes, hammers, clubs, etc.), magic - with staffs, and ranged - with bows.

Gameplay in this game is very simple, like in many ARPG titles. Walk there, kill that, take a loot and return to quest giver for reward. Hazen is not a great game but has something in itself. It's a medicore, but pleasent time stealer.

I'd be honest, I'm not impressed by this game. But don't take my word for it. I just said that because I played this game right after I finished playing Torchlight, hence, my idea of a good game became affected by the quality in comparison with what I had recently played. But of course we can't compare Torchlight and Hazen, Hazen is half the price of Torchlight.

Now, why did I buy this game? Well, I was attracted by their promise about "Game expansion patches (adding content to each episode)." so I hope they hold true to their words as without this so called 'expansions', then this game really lacks the kick. Story isn't that exciting, graphics isn't impressive, and the movement is very clanky. Its cheap so try it yourself, anyway we are all entitled to our own opinion, what is good to me may not be good for you and vice versa.
