Hover Ace review

This is an okay racing game with some fun action element. There are not much to say about this game. Mediocre at best, but still if you are a fan of sci fi and racing, get this game and try it out. For its price the couple of hours you spent will be worth it.

Futuristic racing with guns, shields and a bit of shopping.

Frankly, the beginning of the game is really, really bad. A rather slow race with no weapons on a barren track. 8 minutes of this at normal speed. Use race speed boost in the options menu to get past that. Then you'll start earning tech levels which unlock new guns, shields, engines, mines etc in the shop for you to buy.

That's when the fun begins. Sort of. You and the opponents gradually get heavier weapons, fragging each other off the road, taking in the lead, only to expose your rear to three guys, who want your blood. The tracks (wide enough to contain shortcuts) get filled with items like ammo refills, health packs, explosive crates, boulders, damage boosters, which can strongly affect the outcome of the race.

There are several race types, although they mostly either reward killing or fast and careful driving. The AI is acceptable: they keep up the pressure with gunfire, dash for powerups when low on health, however seem to be using catch-up cheat a lot.

The looks are quite dated (even upon release the graphics weren't mind blowing), but they do their job better that the sound effects, which are bland and never create the impression of any power in your weapons.
