GAME SUMMARY

Gratuitous Space Battles

Rating: 4.1 (109 votes cast)

Who needs backstory? Who needs resource-gathering? Diplomacy is so last year. Gratuitous Space Battles cuts right to the chase of sci-fi strategy games, and deals with large, completely unjustified space battles between huge opposing space fleets.

Gratuitous Space Battles combines the visual appeal of an RTS, with the addictive unit-placement and design gameplay from tower defense games. In GSB, the player does not control individual ships at all during battle. The ships fight to a pre-determined set of orders and formations given to them by you before the battles.

GSB casts you as supreme space admiral, tasked with the design of individual spaceships, and the composition of your fleet, as well as general orders of engagement. This is not a twitch-based real time arcade game like many an RTS, but a game of careful thought, planning and big-picture strategy. Huge space battles can be won or lost depending on just how cleverly you balanced the needs of defensive shielding and armor against the expensive punch of laser cannons and plasma torpedoes.

GSB also features an innovative multiplayer challenge system. You can upload your ultimate fleet to serve as the enemy to other players, and keep track of how many other players have won and lost against your challenge. That way, you will never run out of cunningly designed enemies to battle against!

  • 4 different unlockable player races
  • Over 40 different ship hulls
  • Over 120 spaceship modules
  • Choice of skirmish vs AI, never-ending survival mode or play against other player’s fleets with the online challenge system
  • Play with different rules as each battle has different spatial anomalies to deal with.

I have really enjoyed this game! it is not like any other strategy games I've played before since you don't directly control your units but you have the ability to refit your ships and place them on the map also you have the ability to make the individual ships prioritize different targets (this is the feature that i personally like the most) i would recomend this game for any casual strategy gamer.

Gratuitus Space battles is exactly what it says on the tin. It's not so much a game based on being an admiral, but a ship designer. Like many people complain about, the game requires you to build ships. from an ever increasing library of parts and peices that have different costs. There are plenty of ways to play, and while there are certain specialty missions, most missions can be played with no modifiers.

Each mission has thee levels of difficulty. Easy usually has you with a superior force, normal has a comproble force, and hard has a stronger force. The game sheers away the monotamy of a 4x game and keeps the fun part. Ships explode suitably, and there are plenty of lines for each faction that don't see dozens of the same line in each battle.

Gratuitous Space Battles what can I say...... I bought this looking for a distraction while I eagerly awaited Sword of the stars 2 and in all honesty I gave it a good run :(

though its music is quite dramatic and its graphics are appealing it fails to really get you going.

Building the ships is at most a chore and it really grates when you have to redesign everything because of some anomaly that your fighting in.

In the end you set up your squad press go and watch..... yep just watch you have no control what so ever in a nut shell its a boring game go get Sword of the stars really its amazing and this well it fails

Gratuitous Space Battles (GSB for short) looks interesting at first glance, but boils down simply into a puzzle game. Consisting primarily of challenges that require you to configure your ships, then pit them against another fleet, it can at times feel like trial an error. If you enjoy tinkering with your ships, and retrying configurations until you get the exact right one, then this game is for you.

I feel disappointed. I bought the complete collection from Gamersgate here and while it does include a bunch of content, I feel the original asking price is too much. As others have suggested, if this was merely the battle aspect of a grand 4x strategy title, I would definately be all over this. However as stands, I feel a bit let down with the same thing over and over.

Pretty Basic game. Design ships, then watch them duke it out with other ships. Slowly becomes monotonous as it simply becomes a game of trial and error. The online challenges made by other players consist mostly of severely min/max ship combos. A great game to kill some hours/days but do not expect this game to hold you longer than a couple of weeks.

This is a strategic game where you design ships, tell them what to do, then sit and watch while they're fighting opponents. There are LOADS of items for your ships, so pattens for fleet is nearly infinite. You can also upload your fleet to challenge someone. Epic space battles awaits you!

This game is just what it says. This is one of the best battle simulators I have ever seen. The graphics are top notch. Why couldn't an awesome battle simulator like this be in a 4x game?!? My one wish is that I had a bigger monitor! There are many ways to win, one strategy won't work in every battle situation. Crashes are rare. Value 10/10 on this one.
