Decent but the Controls hold this game back.

By Zuul posted 12th September 2011

I spent about an hour playing and i found that controlling my character was the biggest challenge in the game.

movement/attacking/interacting with the environment in this game is all handled by left clicking the mouse.

(other Arpg's use this system but the implementation of it in this game doesn't work well), its so easy to "misclick" and have your character run straight into enemies and lasers and anything else that will kill you very quickly. the precision based puzzles in this game can become a nightmare because of this.

most items in the game are hard to see, you can show all items on screen with holding the 'alt' key, but unless you hold this down at all times its very easy to wander straight past drops hiding behind scenery or in a poorly lit place. also frantically clicking to pick up something and having your character stutter around to every spot surrounding the item while being shot is harder than it should be.

there is a "dodge" mechanic in this game, that will make your character roll in the direction of the mouse pointer, or optionally with WASD (why couldn't WASD have handled movement?) dodging uses an energy bar and has to recharge. but that is completely pointless as simply moving slightly to the left accomplishes the same thing and doesn't have a cooldown.

where game play is concerned. its a standard Arpg with skills, loot and ways of building your character to your liking. nothing wrong with it. but for experienced people, don't expect a revolution.

as far as the aesthetics. graphics, sound, setting and atmosphere are concerned... it is a very nice game to look at. the music does complement the atmosphere very well. the animations and character models are quite nice. the voice acting i also found is fairly good.

3 stars. would have been 4 if the controls worked well enough, at the time of writing the game is very cheap. so worth picking up if you think you can get past the controls and you should find a decent game in there.

A Hack'n'Slash With Style

By Azradun posted 6th September 2011

This game is very polished. And it feels. The corridors are just filled with that old-school SF climate! Graphics are just beautiful, and adding to the excellent atmosphere of claustrophobia and cramped space objects, as it should be. I felt like when reading about spaceships in my youth :)

The gameplay is very nice as well. You can choose between three characters with different styles of combat. I love miniguns, so I chose a guy with one. When playing simple games, I am a simple person - I want my hand cannon to spill lead like there is no tomorrow. And the game gives me just that, as ammunition is no concern. You can also upgrade your character, buy new skills and attribute, change equipment... Standard stuff, but well done.

All in all, it is an excellent hack'n'slash in space, with fantastic level of immersion.

Like many click and kill RPG’s, the enemies will drop loot thus whetting your appetite for better armor and weapons. The armor, guns, and helmet have a socket for upgradability. Make sure you choose your upgrade wisely because you cannot remove the item after it has been installed. Later in the game you’ll meet up with a greedy trader and you can buy and sell some equipment from him. You can even teleport back and forth as your inventory fills up quickly.

The maps are pretty big and the scenery changes with each chapter. There are many Metal Gear like puzzles that involve swarming lasers, blades and electrified floor panels that mean instant death if you touch them for too long yet you still have to cross it. Many areas of the maps are only accessible through key cards and key codes. Make sure you explore every room and read the journal entries for clues on how to unlock combination doors.

Graphically this game is decent and it is 3D rendered. The enemies are repetitive and the colors are bland but the physics and particle effects look good. The camera is in a third person perspective and you can zoom in and out to see more details. The maps are littered with explosive barrels so there are plenty of opportunities to watch explosions and blow your enemies away (literally).

The sound department is lack luster. The music loops and enemy noises get repetitive after a while. You can always tell when a zombie is nearby. The voice acting on the other hand, is decent.

Although there is multiplayer, I have been unable to try it. I did not see any online servers to join and the DRM restricts me from installing it on other computers in my house. After you beat the game a harder level is unlocked, but its only feature is more difficult enemies. To be quite honest, I have no interest in playing this game again. I’ve seen all six enemies already.

Greed - Black Border review

I'm a fan of games that can be played on coop mode. I bought 3 copies of this game last Hallowe'en and we played this the whole day! Its really nice how they made the skill tree and the stats. The 3 characters have different type of game play, i.e. different skills, toughness and speed which you must consider when selecting and playing them.

The RPG element is very good, each character can have more than 1 build depending on the stats and skill combination that you selected. The equipments and upgrades features are also a nice touch.

The story is also interesting and has some humorous highlights.

In terms of graphics, it isn't falling behind, the explosions are gorgeous and the visuals are great.

The music and sound effects fits in place, dubbing is nicely done as well.

Overall, the game is really great for both single and multiplayer coop. I really recommend this game. I ranked this 5 over 5.

A good, futuristic ARPG in the vein of hack'n'slay. Although you're pretty much always ranged, so there is little literal hacking involved. There is a demo out there that gives a quick overview. All in all, the game manages to capture the whole "Starship Troopers" or Starcraft vibe really well, especially in atmosphere and aesthetics, and it creates a Diablo-like experience. As far as I have seen, it sadly doesn't have randomized maps, which is a shame, like in Titan Quest, with which it also shares the feature of full 3D graphics played in isometric perspective. If you seek a hack'n'slay game, and like dark and gritty sci-fi scenarios à la Starship Troopers, you should really give this one a spin.
