Gothic II

Rating: 4.2 (238 votes cast)

The mine valley of Khorinis. The glorious days of the once productive mines in this small seaside region were long over. Surrounded by the impenetrable magical barrier, the slaves eked out their miserable existence in this apparently natural prison.

One brave man managed to burst the bonds of imprisonment. Willing to do whatever was necessary, he went out to banish Evil and destroy the magical barrier forever. No one in Khorinis had been prepared for this. Too long had they lived under the deceptive notion of security granted by
the apparently indestructible magical dome. The small militia garrison could not put up enough forces against the onrush. After numerous bloody clashes, many captives successfully escaped and found safety in the woods and rugged mountains of the surrounding countryside. The steadily escalating number of raids in the vicinity of the town wall and the bandits' ever-increasing boldness seemed to paralyze the whole town. Khorinis is facing an uncertain future. Due to the farmers' decreasing production, more and more of the food deliveries do not take place, and
the stocks diminish continuously. The militia's might ends at the town gate. Outside the town wall, nobody is safe from the bandits' armed raids. There is war in Khorinis. A civil war.

But there is something else that could not be foreseen.Evil is not dead, rearing its ugly head again.  But this time it is set on delivering the deathblow to humanity, and no one can stop it.

Gothic II review

Gothic 2 is a really good game. The story is a direct follow-up from the first game. It has the same features as the previous title in the series - you get experience for quests and defeating NPCs which allows you to level up and learn different skills from the various people inhabiting the game's world. Some of the characters from the previous game make a return in this one. The graphics and music are improved and are really good. The controls can be set to either the mechanics from the first game or a new, and somewhat easier, system. The game is still as challenging and if you get the expansion pack (Night of the Raven) it's even more so. If you are a fan of RPGs, I'd really recommend this one.

The main reason I wanted to post up this review is because I was umming and aahing over this game for a very long time. I always managed to convince myself to skip it in favour of other things. My main concerns were (a) the apparently terrible graphics, and (b) the apparently terrible controls.

On point a, I'm not really fussed for graphics. But when I was looking for excuses to not get the game, it was a convenient fit. HOWEVER, I would say that - although they're obviously not cutting edge next gen AAA whizzbang standard - the graphics aren't all that bad at all. Definitely not worth avoiding the game for.

On point b, the controls...I honestly didn't find them that difficult! The main problem I had to start was not realising that you had to hold forwards and attack at the same time to attack with the default settings >_> But that can be changed in the options anyway.

So the overall message is, if you're a little bit inclined to play the game that many people consider one of the greatest action RPGs, then scratch that itch and go ahead and buy it! You'll quickly get used to the games' quirks and from there on out it will be plain sailing!

To my shame, I can't get past the bad graphics and the awful engine. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I was an original player from it's launch, but the character movements and controls are beastly, and the graphics are about as bad as the first. I can't rate it down for that though, the game itself is full and fantastic, even if I can't enjoy it like others.

This game is amazing. Like the first game, monsters seem overpowered at times, and stumbling into unexplored areas can bring unpleasant surprises, forcing you to learn how to save every five minutes for fear of death.

Gothic 2 demands you to play for a long time to really enjoy the cooler aspects of the game but if you can get past the initial stage then you should find this game to be a truly fine title.

For RPG fans is a great game for your collection.

This is a very entertaining game in terms of story and atmosphere.

Graphic is slightly better than its predecessor, but using the same engine.

Voice acting is continued to be rather awkward.

Configuring many settings may be needed if you play this on newer systems like windows 7. Applying the community patch and configuring .ini file is recommended to play without sudden CTD.

Gothic 2 is alot larger in terms of the size of the world than the original gothic. I have to say that i preferred the smaller world in the first one, and even then it was confusing to navigate/find certain characters to advance the story.

That's the biggest problem with the game. There are alot of fetch quests where you have to find a specific person. You know the general location (like the name of the town) but where they live is a complete mess.

It feels like hard work getting from A to B. It's alot of work to level up, and it feels longer and more difficult than Gothic 1.

However, the interface and combat system has been improved to make it more fluid and more easy to use. The graphics are sharper also.

Overall this was tedious and confusing to get through (i had to watch a lets play to finish the story) The game has all the basics to be great, but i think it's poorly executed, especially the level design. Only play if you are used to long and difficult hardcore RPG games in the old school style.

Gothic 2 is a must have for any RPG gamer. with one of the best stories that i have found in a RPG. but I must say that the controls for combat took some time to get used to but after you get them down the game realy takes off!

Hi,

Gothic 2 Gold edition, has the, Night of the Raven expansion, gold as credits. Has configurable keys, like, crouch, autorun, jump, quests, map, hide + unhide weapon + more. Has (FPS) or (TPS)(3PS) modes where the player is at any angle rotation + any zoom distance + keep moving. The mouse also answers the questions you choose to answer. Superb graphics, NPC speeches, sounds + audio. Has large inventory slots, same items stack in same slot. Has flame hand held torch, spells + weapons to equip + much more. Prepare ingredients, potions, collect items from dead enemies + chests + much more. Buy or sell items, join guilds, chat to townsfolk, NPC's. Enhance skills + attributes. Has plenty of good options, Has weather effects + much more.

Excellent (RPG), better in (third person perspective)(TPS)(3PS),

I really didn't like this game that much, but I didn't have it when it was new, so maybe it was state of the art when it came out. The play control seemed really clunky and the graphics were nothing remarkable. I don't think this was a good game compared to others (Baldur's Gate series, Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights), I would recommend these ones over Gothic 2.

Be warned

I was unable to get very far into this game. The first time I tried I missed a conversation with a merchant before he became involved in a quest to buy something from him and he ended up with an empty inventory. Bug No. 1. The second time, the only problem was that saving didn't work. Tried it time and again, in all the slots. Nothing. I think it has the potential to be a good game if you can bypass these bugs.

Gothic 2 is a great game, though the graphics and controls hinder my enjoyment. You will have to rebind the controls, and live through the old graphics. If you are into old school RPGs, then this is the game for you.

Definitely one of the classics among RPG's. If you haven't played it, you should. Just be prepared for quite a bit of difficulty. This game doesn't hold your hand in any sense. But once you get into it, it takes hold and doesn't let go. Exactly what a good RPG should do.

Time heals all wounds but it doesn't fix old games. That being said Gothic II takes what made Gothic I good and gets rid of what made Gothic I annoying. My number 1 compliant about Gothic was it's controls and it's lack of mouse binding. Gothic II allows you to bind to the mouse and gets rid of the weird action+walk up to take items. Though there still are control issues it's much better. The graphics are still bad but considering the age not too bad. As far as game play the story starts just weeks after the first game. Again this game is only for RPG lovers as there is very little hand holding. All and all, a good RPG for those who don't mind thinking and figuring things out. Love for Cheesey voice acting is a plus.

A great sequel to a amazing sandbox style RPG, this game also allows the freedom to explore, any choice you make will open a different path making this game REPLAYABLE! Combats needs a little time to get used to because there is some reflex element involved which alot of rpg player tends not to have(including me). But this game offers so much more than what meets the eyes, 10/10 in gameplay, 10/10 in story ,8/10 in graphics. A must get for any RPG gamer or for anyone who is interested in trying out sandbox RPGs

Gothic 2 is a great game for those who enjoy a great storyline and an overall difficult, but fun game. Many things like the combat system and intercations with the various factions in the game are very unique to role playing games. Overall, this game was definetly worth the money, and will keep you occupied for a long time, due to the fact the game has many different ways to beat it.

This wonderfull game is what an rpg is all about, without being pen-and-paper like, wich some people (me partially included) find somewhat borish. when you play it, you WANT to explore every upscure bit of the landscape, and you CAN explore every upscure bit of the landscape. I have have played through this again and again and even though graphics have improved so much, i find that the graphics could be allmost on a pacman-level (small overstatement, houmor me) and this game would still be 5/5 10/10! theres allways something new to it when i try it yet again after some months time. want to try out rpgs? are you an rpg fan? veteran? BUY THIS GAME NOW if you have not allready, wich i find hard to believe. :)

This game has a huge, free roaming world where your character goes from place to place fighting monsters and finishing various quests. The quests range from easy to challenging. Some require lots of thought and travel time.

There is a day and night time schedule. Charactors eat, sleep, cook and create items using various skills that can be upgraded each level. It stikes me as more real life like than most rpg games that I've played.

I would definately recommend this game to any hard core rpg players out there. It has already taken up a good part of my life.
