Gothic III Gold - Gothic III review

By Fistalis posted 14th April

This is a solid RPG if you can look past the atrocious combat system, Lack of character customization, Late access to magic.. a huge learning curve, buggy quests and horrible voice acting.

It has a huge open world to explore, and the freedom is nice.. however so many of the mechanics are just horrible that I could never get myself to play more than a few minutes at a time.

Gothic 3 is an entertaining rpg. The combat is at times clunky, especially with melee weapons, which is why I soon fell in love with the archery side of this game.

Choose either faction, the oppressing Orcs or the rebelling Humans. Or if it suit you more, choose to make things go your way and your way only. The story is immersive enough to keep your attention, combined with a relatively okay voice acting programme the characters around you feel somewhat real.

The game's three star rating is as high as I can go, as the few options to customize your characters appearance and stats are something I always rank highly in an RPG. Definitely worth the price and your time, but not a penny nor a second more than now.

If you are familiar to the Gothic franchise and you liked it as I did, then this game is a must, Period. But if you are newcomer, then I warn you to at least try Gothic 2 (or original), to emerge yourself in to the story and game mechanics, else I hope you have much tolerance for bugs and various problems, which is needed to play this game. All in all, one of the best RPG adventures ever created well meditating between franchises like Elder Scrolls or The Witcher.

The main plot line can be described in a few words, and if you are looking for a RPG that will take you all over the world in an enourmous series of linked quests to become the saviour of all, this is NOT it. But if you are looking for a RPG in which you CAN go all over the world, doing unrelated quests until you decide to end it all, you may just have found what you are looking for. There are a couple of factions in different regions. Being the right hand man of the oppresors in one region and the champion of the rebels in another is possible.

The combat system is simple yet potentially challenging. On easy difficulty you may breeze through a hundred orcs by repeatingly clicking the left mouse button. Getting the newest patch from http://www.worldofgothic.com/gothic3/ and playing it with alternative balancing makes you think twice before assaulting a fortress briming with mercenaries.

You may want to keep the download files as the game needs the frequent reinstalling due to its high crashrate. If you play eight hours in a row, it is likely to crash and need a reinstall. So save often.
