GAME SUMMARY

Gish

Rating: 4.2 (16 votes cast)

Gish isn't your average hero, in fact he's not your average anything... see Gish is a ball of tar. A Sunday stroll with his lady friend Brea goes awry when a shadowy figure emerges from an open man hole and pulls Brea into the ground below. Following Brea's calls for help Gish suddenly finds himself in the subterranean sewers of Dross, a long forgotten city filled with twisting corridors, evil traps and some of the most demented creatures imaginable.

With his gelatinous structure as his only means of defense Gish must follow the echoing cries of his damsel in distress deep into the earth below. What freakish creatures dwell in this subterranean land? Who is Brea's captor? And just how far down does the rabbit hole go?

Life isn't easy when you're a 12 pound ball of tar...

Gish review

Edmund McMillen's first and different from what you'll see later in Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy. It's a bit of a mix between your standard platformer, battling muddy blobs and other things in order to rescue your girl -- albeit as a blob yourself, stomping things -- as well as some interesting physics puzzles -- as in, how am I going to get my Gish from here at point a) up through there to get to point b).

It has incredibly unique controls that set it apart from everything else out there, and although you're likely to get frustrated in the first couple of levels while you try to figure it out, once you grasp them, you won't want to stop. In addition to the main story, you've also go some fun PvP battles and challenges for added gameplay.

Tricky Gish

Pretty cool game. You play as a blob which can bounce, stretch, squish and stick to surfaces, and there are many clever ways you need to use these abilities to get through the game. It can be very difficult at times, with you being required to make arduous climbs between precarious ledges over lava pools and the like. Controls aren't always co-operative; you really need to get physics to work in your favour. Made by some of the same people who made Super Meat Boy. I much prefer this game to that one.

Excellent physics based platformer. The graphics are pleasing to the eye, and the music is alright. The gameplay is unique, in that you are manipulating a ball of tar that can stick to walls, harden and become more viscous. It's different from a typical platformer, because you have to manipulate Gish's shape to move effectively.

It's a bit hard to visualize this, but it works well, albeit a bit buggy. Lifts that move too fast create too much opposite reaction that you will find yourself crushed if you don't solidify yourself in time. It's also easy to get stuck in crevices.

It's easy to rate this game down because of its technical flaws, but it more than makes up for them with excellent replay value. There are time trials in custom levels, and a Versus mode that's a blast to play. There is also a map editor to ensure the fun never runs out once you're done with all the available map.

For that, it gets 5 stars!
