One of my childhood faves, and still is actually. The game is a timeless classic, and it really gets the fighting done right. Riding monsters is also a lot of fun. Golden Axe 2 improves on the formula, but Golden Axe is where it all began!

I just played this game a few days ago, and it really brings back a nostalgic feeling.

The graphics might not be exactly great for this generation, but it does it's job well.

The combat is really still very playable now. I still remember how me and my bro would want to go to different paths and end up fighting over it and dying. Good ol' times. Fighting brutes has never been so fun.

Anyways, if you want to relive your childhood, try getting this game

Played the game alot in the arcarde back in the day. In fact I could go from the start to the final battle on one quarter. (The final boss battle was insane and would take alot of coin so Id normally just restart or go home).

In the modern day this is a nice game to have for quiet times. Its not as demanding as other games so it runs easily. Sega's packaging lets you save along the way. That's great. I can play on a break, save and resume on a later day. A handy game on the laptop.

A Golden Classic

By acare84 posted 18th Aug 2011

Of all the Sega classic games available Golden Axe has probably weathered the test of time the best. Originally an arcade title Sega brought this game to their Genesis / Mega Drive console to showcase the power of their system. The concept is a good one; a traditional beat-em-up in a fantasy setting complete with local coop play. It’s relatively short, but since the story is kind of generic you won’t be playing it to advance the plot and thus replay value is very high.

This newest revisit to Golden Axe also allows you to save your game state, meaning you can stop to eat dinner and still pick up where you left off later. It plays well on netbooks, so on the go gamers and players looking for nostalgia will be delighted.

Great nostalgia trip.

This one really is for those that remember it from the good ol' days.

But I don't remember it being this hard!

Not words that have ever passed my lips before, but I would highly reccomend a game controller for this one.

The keyboard works, of course, but you WILL want to remap the keys.

Whats not to love about the original golden axe, while some may not remember when it came out and may have been plagued by one of the more recent releasing, the beatem up is a great example of the simple fun you can have. Spells, Mounts, Kicking midgets it has it all, get this if you want to either relive your memories or just have a nice beatem up.

I don't see the big deal

By Roberttitus posted 5th Aug 2011

I really wanted to like this game, I just can't see what is so great about it. The enemies take an obscene amount of hits & it is insanely hard to actually connect with said hits. The bosses at the end of each stage are basically impossible to kill on one life. On the Nostalgic & hardcore need apply.

Golden Axe memories

By David_OSU posted 4th Aug 2011

Plays just like the Sega Genesis. This was one of my favorites on that platform. Very high nostalgia value, but probably not for later generations of gamers, other than as a casual game. Also, the availability of free emulators and game ROMs on the Internet reduces the actual monetary value of this retail game to near zero. Should be priced at the one dollar mark, like many iOS games.

A Genesis Classic

By TFrank posted 1st Aug 2011

Golden Axe was one of the more popular beat'em ups in it's time. Progressing from screen to screen trying to get further than you did last time by yourself or with a friend. These sort of games are always fun regardless of how old they are. However, one cannot let nostalgia cloud their mind. The game suffers from involuntary actions associated with it's combo system that more often hurt than help you. I can't overlook this and have to deduct points. Solid game though, and easily worth the $3.

Such splendid times.

Ooh... this bring back memories. Beatiful memories.

Each one of us have some particular games associated to his first videogames experiences.

I have Goldan Axe, amongst other 3-4 80's games.

I remember being 10 and taking my bycicle and running to the game room without my parents knowing it. I just couldn't resist!

And in that game room Goldan Axe was present.

You had to wait a looong line of other players in order to play the game.

Sometimes I waited nearly one hour.

Then Sega consoles were released and it was amazing to be able to play Golden Axe IN my room!

Now I'm nearly 30 and being able to play this game again is such a pleasure to me.

I know this is not a technical review... it's more a bunch of thoughts about splendid memories linked to this (splendid) game.

If you, like me, know what a 80's game room felt like; if you like me know how much money cost a single match (the coin!); if you like me, think you can finally play this game how many times you want and without waiting in line then buy this game! At once! :)

Golden Axe of 8-Bit Golden Age

By CzudakX posted 24th Jul 2011

Classical "Beat-them-up and left them swivelling in your feet" game. Buy it and get back to golden age of 8-bit video games (that figures, he, he). If you never heard about NES, SNES, Sega Megadrive, Jaguar and similiar names - I envy you, because you can immerse yourself in one of the iconical game of all-time. Do not waste occasion and become hero(es) of Yuria! Did I mention it - you can play with your friend, on one keyboard if you are inclined (and get additional old-school value).

This game sucked many, many coins out of my pocket back in the Arcade days so its a real blast to enjoy it again on PC. If you've never played Golden Axe before you've really missed out on a slice of history. For maximum enjoyment of this game a decent gamepad is highly recommended. If you remember the good old days then don't hesitate to play this one again.

Golden Axe is a classic. While the graphics are dated, they still look nice. The gameplay is still very enjoyable, and the game is quite fun to play. At this price, there is no good reason not to get it.

This is simply one of the best games of my childhood. Set out on a perilous journey to the throne of the Death Adder to end his rule. Action packed side-scroller for one or two players. Features giants, skeletons, living statues and even dragons you can ride. Yes, the fire-breathing kind of dragons, though without wings.

Also, now with the ability to save & load the game, you'll be invincible. ;-)

This is a classic which deserves to be played by anyone remotely interested by beat-em alls. It has varied enemies and sceneries and even a story ! However it should be noted that the gameplay is very repetitive and that the game can be finished in a few hours which is very short.

However, for that price, any beat-em all fan should try it.

Classic arcade action. The game has its different classes and enemies to pummel. The emulation is quite good and has the advantage of saved states. A good one if you are looking for some quick action.

Ah, Golden Axe, one of the bains of my childhood.

No matter how hard I would try, my brother would always end up killing me, getting me killed, or in some way making me wish that the game wasn't 2 player. Still, completing the game despite all odds was always a cause for celebration.

It's a shame that Sega never quite captured the essence of Golden Axe in any of its sequels, and Beast Rider, well, let's not talk of that.

If you want a good old fashioned beat em up with a bit of magic & mayhem, go for it.

An old classic brought back from the time where SEGA was ruling.

Obviously the graphics have not aged so well but the gameplay is still as fun and addictive as when I was young. I remember playing this on arcade and it brought back lots of memories.

For the price asked it's a good way to indulge into nostalgia

This side-scrolling,hack and slash treasure from 1989 is something that no old-school players have missed.

Golden axe has two game modes, story mode and duel mode.

In the duel, you are fighting against opponents that are controlled by the computer or player2.The gameplay is that you must defeat one opponent to move on to the next battle.

The graphics have aged well, during the 20 years passed since the game was released.Music loops are just as good now as when.

If you have missed this game so can I recommend to test and experience one of the true Sega classics from the `80s.

A classic Sega Genesis side scroller that is worth it for the nostalgia alone. However if you haven't played this game before then it does offer some quality Hack 'n Slash action with some audio that is out of this decade.

This is totally worth the money because there are just no games like it now-a-days.

A true classic. You will have the choice of three warriors in this side-scrolling adventure. The gameplay is solid for it's genre. The graphics haven't aged all that well, but that is to be expected for the age of the game, but the game itself is timeless, and for $2.99 you can't go wrong.

Good game. It has a nostalgia factor to it.

The graphics, as well as the sound, might not hold a candle to today's games, but if you only see that in the game you are missing the point. Classic gamers will enjoy them.

The sound fx and tracks are nice and give you a feeling of old time.

It is very entertaining and simple.

And for he price tag, it's well worth it.

Golden Axe is a real classic. When I played it the first time, I was like: What?

It was so great. It is a game that you must have played before you die.

It may have a few problems, but who cares?

Buy it. As the others said, "you can't go wrong".

Golden Axe is one of the best arcade retro game you can gift to yourself. I use to play it ages ago with a friend of mine, and it was one of the few game we can play together in multiplayer. You can chose your class: the barbarian fighter the female amazon and the mighty dwarf, it's an amazing game it's a bit short but for less than 3 dollar you have to play or re-play it.

Golden Axe review

By Dottore_46 posted 16th Dec 2010

This is a port of the original Genesis/Mega Drive game. The graphics and sound may look really outdated as of today, but the essence of the game is still there. However, the controls for the pc version are not as good as they were in the original system. Nevertheless, the game plays great in Windows 7 64 and, probably, in any OS. Thus, for any of us who have spent hours of our infancy playing this game, it is a must have.

I first saw this in the arcades many years ago then got converted to many 8 & 16 bit systems, i really loved the Megadrive version and then the Amiga version which i found to be the best with the extra colour palette.

So here we have that Megadrive version and boy does this bring back many wonderful memories, this game brought about a whole new genre in modern gaming, sure it's showing it's age now graphics wise but if you like me love the retro style and were brought up with these games when you were a teenager then this is a must buy.

The gameplay is still as good as it always was and yes is still very much a challenge and at only 1.99 is one of the steals of the year along with the other classic titles in the range, the perfect type of game to get children into gaming and i'm sure they will appreciate the classics over the more violent and modern titles, wonderful memories and history in the making.

One of the most classic games available on Arcades and SEGA consoles, a very fun and entertaining Side-Scroller that's worth a try, even if hack 'n slash isn't your thing.

And for just $2.99 you can't go wrong with this gem.
