GAME SUMMARY

Fort Zombie

Rating: 3.3 (684 votes cast)

“We have one chance. Find a strong place, and band together. Build our defenses. Gather supplies. Arm ourselves for the fight  and save as many souls as we can. Take back our town, our lives, our world from the hungry dark.

That wave will break over this town like a tsunami and take the last of us with them… unless we fight back.”

Fort Zombie
is a focused-scope, casual RPG title in which the game world revolves around a single building – your fort – and the mission specific chunks of the small town that surrounds it. Instead of a major city or a vast countryside, player’s focus their efforts on building up a single structure, finding and training survivors, and venturing out into town looking for supplies.

Targeted directly at the after-work gamer, with gameplay similar to Dungeon Master meets Fallout, players take control of a particular building in town, and begin gathering the supplies and survivors needed to build it up by day and help defend it by night.

Features

  • Choose one of three buildings – the school, the prison, and the police station – as your Fort Zombie, each one with its own strengths and weaknesses!
  • Real time movement and combat keep the tensions level high while trying to achieve objectives before your characters run out of ammunition, food, or luck!
  • Dozens of zombies, some with special abilities derived from their half-remembered lives before becoming undead!
  • Piety, Indiana, a variable 3D town, created using Kerberos’ mix-and-match tile system, for maximum replayability. PhysX® engine adds to the mayhem!
  • Dozens of town locations to search (stores, restaurants, gas stations, ruins, homes) and countless items to find and use in building up The Fort or building up your group characters (food, fuel, generators, tools, guns, etc.)
  • “Collectible” NPC survivor-families give players surprising new abilities, but you have to find them all first!

I'd call this game very mediocre.

First off, the premise is awesome. Sandbox zombie survival? Sign me the hell up! But the controls are shitty, the rules are confusing, and the game is just stupid hard. It's a diamond in the rough, but it's not much fun to play

While the graphics are not stunning, those looking for a more 'realistic' zombie survival game could be intrested by this game, the game mechanics feel a bit like a pen and paper game, you get to customise your character and such. worth it for its price

the game itself is okay it has a great Idea to it but it just doesn't pull through it is very, very, very, much a rough gem and if it had been worked on a bit longer it would have been a good game

Could be a lot of fun, but the game is plagued with just as many bugs as there are zombies. My largest single issue is how the game handles friendly AI. Their intelligence is comparable to hostages in the original Counter Strike. If the developers actually fixed more problems than they've added I would rate this game higher, but in its current state the bugs and glitches massively detract from what could be a very impressive game.

This game was a great concept, a zombie apocalypse occurs and you play as your average Joe and your goal is to recruit survivors, grab food and equipment to stock up on until the zombie eventually find were you are. However this game falls due to the amount of bugs that there are.

Bad path finding is perhaps the worst of these flaws. Survivors will get stuck unsure why they can't wall through fences but I don't blame them as they seem to occasionally be able to. Also, zombies will climb up the air and float to try and reach you. There are various bugs but onto the rest of the game. The fighting can feel odd and doesn't make a lot of sense a majority of the time when you miss a zombie 10 times with a crowbar who is standing right in front of you and zombies damage tends to vary, eg.you take a few hits most seem to miss and a few hit you dealing little damage then all of a sudden one attack and 25% of your health is gone. The game however is still fun while somewhat frustrating and it almost has slight rougelike elements. The game also has replay value due to the missions seemingly being randomised and there are different classes and bases although these are minor differences.

Fort Zombie retails for ten dollars and I’ve seen it as low as five dollars.  I was disappointed by this game, I thought the concept was good but the execution is poor.  The game play is too mundane and the AI and camera controls make it a chore to play.  I couldn’t find an ESRB Rating for this game but I think it would qualify for an M rating.  I don’t recommend playing it in front of kids, they won’t hear much, but there are plenty of blood and guts on display.

When it comes to games, if they provide me with fun and enjoyment I can overlook many issues, This game does CTD a few times, and god it looks nasty, but get beyond that and you have one of the ONLY tps zombie survival games out there that doesn't just have you mow down wave after wave of zombies to score points.

There is a massive lack of real time, survival games and Fort Zombie has a lot going for it if you look past all it's problems. Recommended fun.

I love zombies, I love the premise for this game, and I want to play it, but the controls are horrible. This game has great potential but was killed by horrible controls.

My review and tips on how to enjoy the game

By tykjeklikki posted 19th December 2011

As pointed out by other reviewers, this game could be great, but is made mediocre by bugs, broken AI and bad game-design. The player-character will be almost useless with any weapon at the starting skill level, and it's no fun being surrounded by zombies and finding that only every third or fourth gunshot actually hits anything, while doing minimal damage. The controls are also awkward to use, at least until you can get used to them. These things, among others, make surviving the first part of the game frustrating rather than challenging.

BUT, and this is something I haven't seen any other reviewer mention, is that the game can actually be highly entertaining if you learn how to cheat. You can give yourselves better weapons and stats, more ammo and supplies, and reset the time to give you as much time as you need before the finale.

Giving myself a decent gun and the stats to make my character able to actually hit something made the game alot more fun for me. If you don't want to make the game too easy by giving yourself the best guns in the game, you can simply give yourself a slightly better pistol, or maybe the bolt-action rifle which has good damage, but low rate of fire. You can also decide if you want godlike stats, or to simply give yourself an edge with a slight increase.

Cheating involves editing savefiles and is thus more complex than simply using cheat codes, but search the internet and you can find guides on how to do it.

It may seem strange to recommend a game that requires cheating to be fun, but cheating in this game really unlocks it's true potential, and for me turned the game from being an utter disappointment to being a game I have gladly spent many hours on.

Good concept but need some more devolepment

Fort Zombie has all the makings of a great game, however like so many games, it's poor execution that brings it down.

This is NOT a casual rpg considering all the number crunching going on, though at first this isn't too bad as you can pick pre-made characters, like Policeman, Soldier, Medic, etc, which help you move along, you'll soon find that you need to know what those stats mean when you set off and find you can't run away from zombies or hit the side of a barn whether shooting or swinging a bat. I've tried sneaking, running and shooting through, you won't make it to the safe house without taking a lot of damage -which very little HP will heal each night.

This isn't a casual RPG, it's HEAVY RPG, you have to find survivors, food, medical supplies and try stay alive when the odds are against you from the start and the world is random each 'mission' where you could end up crossing the whole town, spawn surrounded by zombies, or have the people you need to rescue eaten 20 minutes before you arrive at their barricaded house.

At first I dropped this game for being impposible, but I find I keep coming back, unable to pass the first 2 days, yet unable to uninstall the game as well. There's something great about being in a town that's always unfamiliar where you feel each wrong move will be your last. But then you see zombies sliding up walls, while emptying whole clips at jogging zombies you can't hit at close range due to stats being to low and having to build up a fort, with no idea how to go about doing that.

"The only thing I could never stand about piety, all the ****ed zombies." Search for survivors, build defenses, loot the town, possibly starve, and/or kill zombies. Sounds nice doesn't it, this game is almost great. There's a poor aiming system holding it back, and lots of very similar buildings with very similar furnishings. Most of the zombies are clones of each other, and most of the survivors look the same too. Despite these flaws, I find myself playing this thing again and again and again. It's got flaws, not in the bugged way of daggerfall or in the complete crap way of arcania, but they're there, and noticeable. These flaws don't seem to detract from the gameplay so much as enhance it.

Early proof-of-concept, not a game

By Barthez posted 10th November 2011

Do not even bother with this title. Even if the whole idea for a game is very appealing, the resulting product is not worth downloading even for free, not to mention buying it with real money.

Game suffers from terrible optimization problems. People running high-end rigs can have serious framerate problems, not to mention mid-class users as me. It could turn out to work with your PC, but chances are slim.

Gameplay is another problem here. While concept of game is most interesting, the rough gamedesign spoils all the fun. It stretches from enemy AI to bad targeting (HINT: in real world, it would be hard to miss at point blank range).

This is now a pretty fun game, though frustrating due to its high difficulty. Its more survival than run and gun so please keep that in mind when purchasing. i.e. you will do much more running away to survive another day than killing every zombie in your path.

Though if your into survival rpg, with a interesting twist on the zombie gaming genera, then pick this game up. If your just looking for a casual run and gun zombie fest I would look the other direction.

Even as a big fan of the zombie genre and the Rockstar Games studio, I wasn´t really able to enjoy this game.

The controls are difficult to master and the animations are quite poor for modern standards. You might also have some problems if you don´t have a high-end PC, i´ve tried this game on two different PC´s that meet the minimum requirements but it still lags sometimes.

If you have the time and motivation to play an underground game like this, I would recommend it. Otherwise, even a price reduction wouldn´t make up for this game.

Hit or Miss take on Zombie Gaming

By blitz81 posted 28th October 2011

Stepping away from first person bullet storm of Left 4 Dead and the story driven drama or Resident Evil and Dead Rising, Fort Zombie spins a somewhat original twist to zombie gaming that has only really been explored in undead horror films.

In Fort Zombie your ultimate goal is to build a safe house that will withstand a huge wave of the undead that are slowly decending upon the city. To achieve this you will need to venture forth into the city and find fellow survivors and gather supplies to help in your quest for survival.

While Fort Zombie does present a fun and unique take on the survival horror/zombie game it is a flawed master piece that has more than it's far share of bugs and glitches, unique zombies that people will either love or hate (Gridiron players that charge you down or Soldier Zombies that still use firearms.) and A.I. that will have you questioning just how those other survivors lasted long enough for you to find them.

All in all, Fort Zombie isn't a bad game but it definately could have used a little more refinement before it's release, recommended for hardcore zombie fans or those looking for a extra challenge in their action/survival horror.

Now for me it took me a while to really get into this game and enjoy it. The very start of the game gives you a simple tutorial and then your thrown into the action. Heck, you have to run as fast as you can to the building of your choice. When you actually get there though the game really does start. YOu can pick your missions and kill all those zombies, with the right weapons. Guns seem useless to me and melee weapons never really hit the mark. though when I finally got a weapon which I could swing and not get tried I killed all zombies. Building your base is interesting enough as well.

By gamerdude130 posted 20th August 2011

I was so looking forward to this game when i heard of it and i was quite intrigued. Then i watched some gameplay footage and i saw that the graphics weren't top notch. "But thats ok" i said to myself maybe the gameplay will be better than the graphics. And when it released i bought it installed it. Horror insued....the first major complaint is the graphics and the optimiazation of the engine. You see i can run shogun 2 and The Witcher 2 on the highest settings at 45-60 fps. This game even on low never went over 25 frames and that was when there was nothing on screen. When the zombies showed up it dropped to like 15 fps. And the end scene is the biggest resource hog i have seen in a game relesaed in 2009. It literally dropped to 1 fps. A few other complaints are that the combat is sluggish. The story is nonexistent. The voice acting is horrendous. And overall i think its probably THE worst game released by Paradox ever. I can't recommend it to anyone.

All in all, I would buy it again.

Good for some fun

By wiersmaster posted 1st August 2011

This game is a lot of fun. IF you can get over the "unpolished" feel of it. The graphics feel dated compared to comparable recent games, but the game makes up for this with some interesting (but sometimes frustrating and/or hard) gameplay.

The replay value is decent: you'll probably want to play the campaign a few times, but there isn't a long lasting appeal.

I'd advice this game if you like zombie games and aren't really bothered by low graphics.

Fort Zombie review

By Penquin posted 22nd July 2011

Perhaps some of the other reviewers could look past the unpolished nature of the game, but I could not. Despite the game having an awesome premise, playing it just isn't fun. To start with, the engine is unoptimized as humanly possible. A rig that can run ARMA 2, BFBC2, Crysis 2, etc maxed at 1080p should not get choked up by a game with graphics this poor. I don't mind lo-fi graphics, but if they are lo-fi, that means they shouldn't be resource intensive. If you can get past the performance issues, the game play isn't very fun either. Aiming is super imprecise and the camera is a chore to fight with making actually hitting anything a crapshoot. I don't know about anyone else here, but difficulty is only fun for me when it tests my skills. If a game is difficult because you have to fight with the game to play it, it's just a bad game. I honestly would not recommend Fort Zombie at any price.

Fort Zombie is a great game but only if you like the action-rpg genre, and it has a lot in common with roguelike games too.

The levels are randomly created, adding a good replayability value.

What disappoints greatly is the terrible AI and the bugs: enemies that go through walls, party members that can't follow you because of pathfinding issues and such things.

Like other comments said, all these problems sometimes make me think about what Fort Zombie could have been but is not...it was made by indie developers though, so some problems are related to this too, for instance the weird graphic engine they used.

Be also warned that it has some compatibility issues: it doesn't work on some PCs, even new ones, and if it works, it often crashes: to me about once every 2 hours, and since you can't save the game during missions, it's a problem.

The idea behind the game is huge though...I hope there will be a Fort Zombie 2 with a new approach to coding.

OK, I found this one both addictive and entrancing, while at the same time totally frustrating.

I've loved the Sword of the Stars series (still playing it years later, can't beat that longevity), and was looking forward to trying this one. Haven't been caught up in the current zombie craze, but if it comes from these folks, it's worth trying.

The concept is great, with just enough hidden under the hood to keep you from gaming it to death. There's no way you can get enough ammo/health to kill everything in sight, like the usual FPS approach, so you have to pick and choose. But, it is SO hard to choose! Will that store have the rifle you've been looking for all along, or is it totally looted. And, will you get enough bullets? Should you bring someone along, or are they going to either use up all that precious ammo you've been hoarding, or charge in front of you with an axe when you are trying to line up a shot at that oncoming zombie?

Unfortunately, it is bogged down by a flaky engine and awkward controls, and the perspective isn't helping either. Drove me to distraction when I tried to play..... And, getting those rescued NPCs to follow that torturous route you used to avoid that nasties.....

All things considered, at that cost, give it a shot. I certainly had fun.

Great game mostly for those interested in the genre (zombie rpg base building). Considering that it's a fun game and one of the only games I know that fill this niche, one would overlook some of the obvious flaws with the game, such as bugs, choppiness with graphics. Its also not a very long game. There isn't much re-playability, it comes with 3 difficulty levels that change the base you will ultimately be defending from police station, to prison, to school. The npc's you must recruit is also random in every play through.

In all, the game is largely worthwhile only to those interest in the genre, which I am. But with others, it'll probably be hit or miss.

Many aspects of the games are broken. The camera, the controls, the AI (not to original to whine about that one) and even on my high-end computer it seem to run pretty bad.

The graphics might be dated, but they have a nice feel to it and to be honest, I'd give anything with Zombie and RPG in it a shot. Which I did. It will give you a lot of fun for the current price, so do not hesitate. Buy it.

A good game, and a great concept, let down only by some of the execution.

There are a lot of bugs that lead to your enemies simply glitching through walls or yourbullets t chase you further. You'll also find enemies that can one shot you before you see them, and enemies faster than you you dont take any damage.

These lazy little problems, as well as a serious graphical failure, let down what would otherwise be an excellent and very unique game.

Fort Zombie review

By jos de trol posted 31st January 2011

This game was a good idea, but a horrible execution unfortunately due to the horrible user interface and especially the camera angles. The camera angles often make it impossible to target zombies effectively, which makes getting headshots quite hard. The difficulties are worse indoors, where you risk seeing nothing because you're seeing nothing but interior walls.

Fort Zombie review

By BlackEscaflowne posted 14th January 2011

Fort Zombie is a budget title that was developed as a result of a joke during engine testing for another game (NorthStar). Apparently during animation testing one developer noticed the animation made the character move like a zombie and made a small level for fun. Other devs liked it and decided to make a game out of it. Despite of it, the game is incredibly deep, thanks to the talented designing/writing team - and it's clear that serious thought went into it.

The game itself is hard. Survival is the key, and even the very first level will be a challenge to some (I myself died several times) - in fact the game has the feel of the old arcade games, where you wanted to see how far one can get on a quarter.

You get a decent selection of weapons with different pros and cons (hint: swords are stellar) to use against the zombie hordes. The zombies themselves come in different variates, and with the levels being generated, adds to the replay value.

Despite being a fun sneaker/shooter, it is also a very tactical game. In order to survive the final zombie assault one has to manage both the raids and the Fort itself efficiently.

The graphics are nothing to write home about, but are not bad either. Note that pausing and rotating the view at the start of a level can significantly reduce any framerate problems. It takes a bit to get used to the controls, especially the shooting bit, but after a while I had no problems.

For a budget title developed as a side-project, Fort Zombie exceeded all of my expectation by a fair margin. Final verdict - a deceptively simple, yet deep little game that's very fun to play and one you will find very rewarding if you push past the few minor annoyances.

So... to sum up Fort Zombie-

This is about the best idea I've ever seen for a game. The way this idea comes to life leaves something to be desired-

The graphics could be better.

The aiming is torture.

The AI makes you want to cry sometimes.

That beings said-

It is a ten dollar game. It lets you do amazing things like construct a fortress to keep out zombies as the world ends. The game has strong roleplay elements in the same way the X-Com or UFO series games do. The bad AI will make you laugh. The guns will make you laugh. The crowbar might make you die because you laugh so hard. But if you go with it, and you let it do its thing... you'll love it. It is a lot of fun, pulls you in, and makes you think... either in spite of or becuase of the bugs and the AI shortcommings. I recomend this game.

The first thing that a potential purchaser of 'Fort Zombie' should know is that this game is RIDDLED with bugs and poor performance is to be expected even on the best of machines. Because of this fact I find it hard to recommend for its current price of $10.

However if one can look past the flaws 'Fort Zombie' one will find a unique gem of a game with a great concept but suffering from poor execution. It is mindless zombie killing fun with some excellent RPG elements such as the need to collect guns... ammo... food... medical supplies and survivors.

PROS:

- Unique

- Loads of fun

- No two games are the same

- RPG elements work well

- Zombies

CONS:

- Lots of bugs

- Terrible performance

- AI is terrible

Great concept, poor implementation. One could write a book on the failings of this game. I probably shouldn't be too harsh, though. It was a very ambitious game but the developers apparently bit off more than they could chew. I'm just sad because I wish that the developers had spent an extra year or two polishing the game up a bit more. Everything feels clunky and unresponsive, and the game has a nasty habit of killing you in the first 5 minutes of the game. I'm not sure if that's a feature or not. While I'm not necessarily against a game that's hard and isn't afraid to kill you soon, it shouldn't be so hard that you consistently are killed during the portion of the game that should be training you how to play.

Anyway... If you're a fan of the zombie apocalypse, you might be able to overlook certain problems, but overall the best I can say about the game is that it could have been worse, but it could also have been so much better.

This version fix every problem of the last versions, and add some more stuff. it totally make it a hole new game. Lot of characters, guns, traps to build, items, This is the first game than capture the esence of free roam zombie apocalypsis game.

This game is a mixed bag. A very mixed bag.

Good parts:

Weapons. You have a fair selection of weapons with which to take on the horde of various zombies with. If all else fails, it's your trusty fists against the zombies, which might be less-than-optimal when it comes to survival.

RPG stats. You can customize your character with skills in the preferred weapons.

Management. You can direct and assign your allies to various tasks, defending, scrounging, healing and so forth.

The bad:

The games engine. It is incredibly clunky and requires far too much CPU power for its very dated look and effects.

The graphics. See above. Late nineties-graphics do not improve this game's outlook.

Sound. No atmospheric music or much in the way of sound effects here. Basic weapon effects, and that's pretty much it.

Overall: If you're a hardcore zombie-killing fan, you might want to go for this one. But my advice is to wait until the price goes down, I can't honestly recommend this title for €10.

This game feels a bit like a slightly unpolished take on the old XCom games. You'll be spending most of your time in a "tactical map" much like those other games with enemies to kill, again, and goodies to find. The rest of your time is spent assigning tasks to other survivors, once you rescue some, at your chosen base to prepare for zombie attacks.

The stories of the survivors you find are mostly rather interesting. The same can be said for some scenes you can come across while exploring town. This immersion does help to distract from some of the game's less attractive points.

The graphics are dated, but they're not what I consider ugly. Some of the balance may be off in terms of player durability and weapon accuracy. Sometimes you'll be one-shotted while constantly missing the target yourself at point-blank range. To be very accurate it seems you have to really pump up the weapon skills to the exclusion of most of the others.

I'd say this game is worth the price here. It's much like a guilty pleasure if you enjoy a little zombie bashing while exploring a wasted town.

This could have been such a great game.

A lot of the concepts are great and the survival scenario really appeals to me.

Unfortunately it is very unfinished and buggy.

I don't realy care that the graphics are a bit outdated, but when it is impossible to run it without horrible lag it degrades the palyability.

If the production value of the game had been higher I would have given it five stars, but as it is now I can only give it three.

Well the game is very good... if you are a zombie fan. A very patient zombie fan. Game is buggy and graphics are kind-of dated, BUT the game's purpose is to build an engine and to fix it till perfection for Kerberos other game, North Star. I think that this game is good "waste" of 10 $ even for a non zombie fan as it has randomly generated town feature, so no game is same. Fortress are same but town itself is not. So endless fun is guaranteed. :D

Fort Zombie is an excellent, original game that is plagued by an engine that is currently under development and some bugs. The game is fun to play, and is refreshingly difficult. Surviving the zombie apocalypse isn't easy. I'm a veteran gamer, and the first time I loaded up this game I had died within a few minutes. You won't be Rambo, blowing your way through hordes of undead, although once you figure things out you'll hold your own. The game's not about fighting though, it's about surviving. Avoiding zombies is better than engaging because it takes a long time to get health back until you find a decent doctor and who knows when and where you'll find more ammo for your favorite gun. Health, food, and ammunition are all precious in the game. That said, the engine suffers from relatively poor performance even on decent machines, and the AI pathing is sometimes a problem. I've had a few ctd bugs (3-4 in about a month of play) that seem to be related to zombie doctors reattaching limbs. But for me these issues didn't make the game even close to unplayable, and I never had any camera issues whatsoever (hold down right click and you're in charge of the camera. Isn't that standard? I think people are complaining because they're not used to the somewhat odd 3rd person isometric/over the shoulder hybrid perspective.)

Unfortunately, the bad camera and character control led me down. I just can go anywhere. I can even kill a zombie :( I wish they will try to fix those elements. I can comment more because I always die five minutes trying to navigate and find a reason what to do or where to go. This is the 1st game I bought that I did not enjoy. Sad :(

I think this is one of the most solid Zombie video games out there in terms of setting the mood. Part of this means that more practical aspects of surviving the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse.

This includes find supplies and survivors. As you might expect ammo is scarce and simply trying to kill all the zombies in an area is impractical.

I find this game challenging but rewarding. If you are in need of practice for the coming Zombie Apocalypse this is the game for you.

I really did not enjoy this game, for graphics where horrible, and yet I lagged and crashed many times. The game is very unplayable and very hard. I had to to restart many times just to get through the first day, and then i crash or die later on. Even after lower graphics I still crash and lag.

On the zombies itself is just dumb. Now zombies can use guns and run? I know zombies are not real, but very unrealistic. Half the time, zombies are faster than you and you run out of energy after running for 2 seconds.

Do not buy this game unless the game is on sale or you hate your money. Even to the most zombie addicted gamers, you will find this game unappealing and dumbfounded

This game is quite tough. The combat is not the best and neither the graphics. But they did pull off quite a few things nicely like the whole apocalypse mood of the game. You actually feel like trying to survive there and you are not a superman. It also has some special zombies like police zombie with a gun and football zombie that tackles you.

If you want a zombie game different than the usual kill them all and get to the end get this game. If you want something really action oriented you should try something else.

Fort Zombie isn't actually that bad for a "not-AAA -title". It might look pretty old, zombies aren't that frightening and controls are a bit stiff, but overall, I like it.

But, and this is important, you need to have the correct mindset when playing this game. If you don't like zombies or survival games in general, then this game is not for you.

Base building, looking for survivors and essential goods for the final showdown is really great! Running around the city while flocks of zombies chase you is pretty...well, fun :-)

And about the shooting and melee mechanics what everybody whines about, well, it's an RPG. If you don't have the skills to fire a gun, then you most likely miss. BUT if you do know how to handle a gun, then it's a different story altogether. Aim for the head :-)

All in all, the game costs a few bucks and it's well worth the money.

Oh, and remember to put some points in stamina, since you'll be running a lot around town.

I have to say, I wanted badly to like this game, but, like others, I can't get past the horrible controls and camera. The controls are a (seemingly) standard WASD to move, mouse to shoot combination, however, only W behaves as expected. Pressing S causes the character to turn completely around and run in the new direction rather than backing up as expected. That wouldn't be so bad, except that the camera angle also swings wildly to try and accommodate the new character facing. Pressing A or D cause the character to sortof run in a sideways semi-circle, also changing the character facing and giving the shizoid camera fits of wild and seemingly arbitrary movement. Try aiming a pistol at anything when the perspective and angle are in constant, unpredictable movement! And it's not just movement that causes the camera angle to change, it seems to have a life of its own, I honestly couldn't figure it out. As a last resort, I searched the game settings to see whether there was a "turn off wacky camera movement" option, but no luck. I really hope that the developers take note and offer an option for more user friendly controls, and a camera angle that stays where one puts it. If they do that, this could be a lovely game, but failing that my advice is, don't buy this even if it's on sale for $1! It's not about the money, it's about the time you'll waste.

Fort Zombie review

By mastalouist posted 5th June 2010

I held off on writing a review because Fort Zombie had a bit of a shaky release. I'm glad I did, however! With patches the nasty release bugs are gone and a number of fan-suggested tweaks can be seen in the game. I'm enjoying it a lot, though I still find it difficult.

It's hard to describe FZ. It's one part indie shooter, one part RPG, one part adventure game, with smatterings of base building and even a slight touch of "set collecting." It's an odd mix, but I like it.

Initial character creation is surprisingly robust, and will have a huge impact on your early game.

Characters with more combat oriented skills will breeze through the early stages of the game, but may lack the interaction skills to draw more survivors to their cause, or the medical skills to reduce injury-related downtimes, or the crafting skills to properly fortify their base.

Conversely, a character built around interpersonal and salvaging type skills will collect more people and the weapons to arm them, but will find forays into town much more dangerous and hectic.

It's a good balance, without wasted skills or stats, and allows for interesting builds.

I also enjoy collecting survivors. Most survivors are part of a family, and reuniting the entire family kind of like completing an armour set in Diablo. It's not always possible, as the survivors you find are random, and in my 12 or 13 play-throughs, I believe I've seen about half of them.

There are also rare, powerful survivors who grant special bonuses and are always great to have.

The whole family system gives the game a just a touch of the feeling I associate with collectible-card games, which I appreciate.

The game also has a pervasive humorous side. You can explore locations From WTF Burger to Sweeny's Pie Shop. The various themed zombies are silly but fun, from the football zombie who tries to tackle you, to the doctor zombie who runs around reattaching limbs when you shoot them off. He doesn't even care if they're the right limbs.

FZ will often reward exploration, though it isn't entirely random. You will soon learn to spot specific sites, that one garage that always has something useful, or the Kerberos office where you can find a sword and something to eat. Where these locations are on the map, though, changes every time you leave your fort, so it's worth it to take detours from time to time.

If I had to attribute a single theme to FZ, though, it would be the challenge. This is a challenging game. On easy, I survive to the final battle about half of the time, and make it through that battle about half the time as well. I enjoy every minute of it, though!

The stability is greatly improved, but its still a little buggy. At it's core, Fort Zombie is a fairly unique idea and the execution isn't too bad. Sneaking around, scavenging supplies, rescuing survivors, fighting zombies, and building up your base defenses is all good fun. Graphics and sound are basic.

I played it through once and I'm not sure i would again - mainly because the frame rate dropped to less than 10FPS on the final fight

Overall its a decent game and probably worth a tenner if you like horror survival.

If youre a fan of zombie movies this game is definitely for you. The camera controls are a little clunky,as is movement. But with enough practice movement becomes more manageable, and you can manuever the camera while the game is paused( which to me seems like a bit of a cheat). As far as the graphics go they are very dated, but the gameplay makes up for that. Running around town with a shotgun making zombies explode is great fun. Of course when youre playing you want to avoid zombies as much as possible. Your movement should be in short bursts as you go from hiding site to hiding site taking out the occasional zombie on your way to your objective. All in all, for the price you pay, this game is definitely worth it.

This is easily one of the most fun and most frustrating games i have played in a VERY long time. The concept is novel and well executed enough that anyone who enjoys a decent zombie movie should have at least some respect for it. The game can be downright challenging, however, and true enjoyment is unlikely to be garnered by any but more experienced gamers. Graphics are admittedly sub-par, though not so bad that they really effected my experience. The biggest con to this game is its almost total lack of sound. I never considered myself much of an audio guy, but when the only sound in the whole game is a gunshot you find out just how much you tend to rely on sound effects. That being said this is still a very enjoyable game, where you go out day after day into a zombie infested city, rescueing (And arming) survivors and scavaging for any resources (from assault rifles, to bags of potato chips, to rusty springs to use in making traps at your new home.) Your upgradeable base of operations is fun to tinker with, and the final stand is a truly unique and wonderful experience.

Fort Zombie seems to be a game whose goal is to create a more realistic zombie survival RPG. While this idea is sound, sadly it fails to deliver. Bogged down with a clunky engine, consisting of poor performance, hideous "80's-style CGI" graphics and clipping, the player must also suffer through poorly designed game mechanics. For example, the Soldier character can barely run 2 blocks before collapsing in exhaustion - an easy snack for the zombies. Zombies can easily outrun you (whatever happened to the Romero-esque 'slow and shambling' zombies?!), where you become forced into combat. Combat consists of missing your attacks 75% of the time - either melee or firearms - with the commotion usually resulting in more zombies attacking.

The real sad part is that I *really* want to enjoy this game. Its premise is amazing and it has so much potential. While the engine issues are merely annoyances, the game mechanics is what ruins it. Perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel via. player-made mods.

Great concept, somewhat marred by the execution. If you can ignore the dated graphics, awkward camera and an AI which can at times be it's own worst enemy then what you have is a highly replayable, fun little gem.

Essentially, what we have is a true survival horror game. You play a survivor of a zombie holocaust, and must choose a base to hole up in against an approaching horde. Each day you receive a choice of missions which can be anything from rescuing fellow survivors to replenishing your food supplies. Different survivors have different talents which run from the obvious, such as a doctor or nurse improving the medical care you receive back at base, to the rather more arcane such as decreasing the odds of being caught on the way to or from a mission. This is balanced however by a need to look after their morale and physical needs such as food and medical supplies.

Survivors not taken out on a mission can work on fortifying your main base against the oncoming assault by building barricades or traps, and it can be as much fun trying to design a real fortress against the horde as it is searching the city for ammo and weapons.

Unfortunately the bugs can at times get frustrating. While on missions the AI for the survivors can see them get stuck on various fences, cars and doorways. Sometimes they will attack zombies, other times they will simply stand around while getting munched on without attempting to defend themselves. The zombie AI itself is little better; sometimes they will come running at you from across the map, other times you can be standing right next to one and it won't react, despite them supposedly being attracted by gunfire.

Where this can really bite is the final mission itself. When all goes well you are given a climactic last stand battle against an almost unstoppable horde as you put your defence plan into action. Equally however you can end up simply slaughtering the zombies one by one as they try and fail to navigate a stairwell, or watching a fellow survivor blast apart your carefully placed barricades for no discernable reason.

Nonetheless, this remains a highly replayable and fun game provided you don't mind the occasional snafu.

The game was released a little early as far as bugs and crashes go, but that helped things move along quickly because the community helped flush out all the issues. Now especially with the fixes brought by this latest patch (bringing the game to 1.04), there is hardly anything to get in the way of fun!

I find this game more enjoyable than Left 4 Dead because its more than just who can shoot the most zombies. This game is about survival! Fortifying bases, assigning duties to survivors, resource gathering, etc.

This is the kind of zombie game that we need, not more Left 4 Dead type games (although those do have their place). Come to think of it, this game is like The Last Stand 2, but even better!

Absolutely worth $10 bucks

By bitobah posted 17th December 2009

Fort Zombie, as a concept, is rather amazing. I will be the first to admit that I had high hopes from the team that created and wrote my favorite 4X strategy games - Sword of the Stars. I followed Fort Zombie's development religiously, and I was well-aware that it was actually pieced from parts of a game that Kerberos has not yet finished (another game I have high hopes for). So when I paid my $10, I knew what I was getting into.

Now the actually execution of the game seems to be pretty interesting, the optimization of the graphics system makes the game pretty much unplayable on my mid-range system. While most of the system specs for my computer are equal to or higher than the recommended specs, my Video Card is only 256 MB (they ask for 512). This isn't kidding. Despite the rather older looking visuals (some say ugly, but the game is more unpolished than ugly) the graphics are fairly system intensive. Again, this must have to do with optimization - although I can play Dragon Age on medium, I was forced to lower Fort Zombie to an unacceptable level to be able to play the game without major lag or stuttering (something that makes running from or killing zombies rather hard). There are some tricks that improve lag - like zooming fully in to your character and then slowly circling the camera (this had to do with the fact that levels loaded as you "saw" them and you could pre-load the level this way) - but they still did not allow me to reliably play the game.

I did encounter some CTD and other crash bugs, but this wasn't all that frequent.

Otherwise, there is a pretty interesting game in there if I could access it. What I did get to play, clearing a fort, going out on missions, allocating time and resources to protecting the fort versus finding more weapons and supplies, was all very fun. The game looks casual, but I would say that it is not - it is pretty difficult and hardcore strategy. I would even dare say that it is a graphically intense "roguelike" much like Dwarf Fortress or Dungeon Crawl, that gives the play a ton of freedom, but enough freedom to finally mess up and possibly lose (however, unlike Dungeon Crawl, Fort Zombie allows you to save and reload). So FZ is a difficult game that allows you to use trial and error and "die" in entertaining ways, only to reload or restart to try again. That the game has such a fun concept that people WANT to try again, shows a testament to the system. I just wish I could access the system without the crippling lag.

First, bear in mind this game was a spin off from another game in development. Get past the occasional bug, the tendency of the game to run choppily on many systems that meet or exceed the requirements, and you still have an innovative and enjoyable spin on the zombie survival action game. A few more patches and this game would be amazing (if you can get over graphics that feel five and sometimes ten years old).

This is a RPG, not your typical first person shooter, but just the same consider how many times we've all wanted to pick a spot and defend it against a zombie horde. In Fort Zombie you get to do just that, improving your 'fort', gathering supplies and survivors, all while awaiting the inevitable horde. For $10 this was a great purchase.

Tsk tsk, could have really been a good game. Some may say that it's just $10.00, but it's about the principle of the purchase, not the price. Burger joints sell burgers for, say, $1.50 each. At that price, you are paying for a burger that you expect will satisfy you; the fact that the seller is offering something for sale should carry a moral promise (emphasis on should) that you will be satisfied to an extent that the price connotes.

This game costs $10, but the satisfaction to be derived here is about $2. Too bad, really. It is an interesting game - it is about survival: supplies, ammunition and shelter, which I think is the main point of a zombie movie, not the shooting. This game did not miss that point. It did, however, miss the point that A VIDEO GAME HAS TO WORK for it to be played satisfactorily.

This game crashes every other mission on my PC. Each mission takes about 5 minutes each. That's a lot of crashing.

he graphics don't bother me that much - in fact, the crappy graphics add to the atmosphere. This is not a beautiful game. Who cares.

Perhaps the only redeeming factor of this game is that it is fun. As mentioned, the game revolves around survival. In that point it succeeds.

By lowercaserho posted 16th November 2009

5 stars for the gameplay, then 1 star knocked off for the somewhat dodgy graphics then instantly added back on for the low price tag.

I first came across Fort Zombie when I was spending a couple of weeks visiting a friend. She had it and it looked interesting and fun, so I played it. Then played it some more. Then I bought my own copy within a few hours of arriving home.

The basic idea here is that if you were in the middle a zombie apocalypse, you wouldn't want to go out and kill as many zombies as you possibly could. All you'd really want to do would be survive, and the fewer zombies you had to encounter along the way the better.

Sure, you can't get anywhere in Fort Zombie without killing zombies, but that's not the focus. If you can manage to sneak past a zombie without it noticing you then so much the better. Not only do you retain your precious ammo, but you don't run the risk of the noise of gunfire attracting more zombies.

The stealth element works surprisingly well, in that the penalty for being spotted is big enough that you try to avoid it but not so big as to really ruin your day.

Indeed, game balance throughout is well thought through. Ammo is plentiful enough that you'll have enough if you're careful, but scarce enough that you will run out if you're not careful. Different weapons do feel like they're genuinely different and have trade-offs to be made. Do I kill this zombie with the pistol which might take 5 or 6 shots, or do I use the shotgun which will kill it quicker but be more likely to be heard by surrounding zombies?

Likewise, there are trade-offs to be made in character creation with different skills and attributes. Do I want to focus on weapon skills to more efficiently take out the zombies in my way, on sneak skill to avoid the zombies in the first place, or on the spot skill to make it easier to find ammo and supplies? That there is no single right answer definitely aids replayablity, and that you do have to choose and can't be a superhuman who's talented at everything definitely helps ratchet up the tension.

So that's the good, what about the bad? Well, there are definitely a few bugs and the graphics are very dated, but neither of these things stopped me from having oodles of fun with the game. Add to this the low price tag and the developer (Kerberos) with a history of providing support and updates for their games, and I highly recommend this.

Although I gave it a 3 I'd love to give this game a higher rating. It's a fun premises and has the makings of something fun and cheap with good replayability.

However, this game has a terrible camera, and I've dealt with many terrible cameras in my day but this one takes the cake. Aiming will become frustrating and maneuvering will be a pain. Being able to look around is an ok idea and so is over the shoulder, though honestly I'd prefer first person view, but the camera does not lock behind you. You have to position the camera right constantly, and while doing so you have to be able to match your movements with the new direction it is facing. Not the worst on it's own though could be better, but oh god the aiming. Trying to get off good shots while positioning your character correctly and maneuvering the camera alongside the skill points in weapons needed to be proficient makes this rage inducing. I can understand that they don't want you to be a crack shot off the bat, just a common person, but when paired with this kind of camera set up it's just too much.

Also it crashes quite a bit and my gaming rig is top shelf, but I suspect this to be fixed in patches and as there already is a patch I wont complain too much. It's the camera that gets me.

This might be a good game when they finish it and its a shame because this game was made for me. I dont care about graphics or intense action; most of the games I enjoy are older anyway but this game is unplayable in its current form. The camera and control movements are the worst I've ever experienced. Since the camera doesnt track behind your character you can actually run out of the frame. Also there seems to be some confusion as to whether the camera controls movement or the view. If you are walking forward and attempt to look to the left your character will begin to move to the left even though you are holding down the key to move forward. As of right now Fort Zombie is not worth ten dollars. When its completed I look forward to playing because we need more games of this type.

The game is ugly and laggy, even on a good PC. However, it is also immensely fun to play, much like Dead Rising but over a whole town. If the concept of holding a fort full of you, some traps, some survivors and a pile of guns sounds like a good idea to you then you will most likely find this game well worth the asking price.

The recent update fixed all the framerate issues. I never had too much problem before since I have a pretty good gaming rig, but this patch completely removed the few seconds of chug I had on entering a mission - now it's smooth as glass no matter how many zombies I have after me, even if I go out at night against more zombies than I have rounds to shoot. The gameplay was also improved. Zombies are more dangerous now (they lunge instead of just swing at you, so you have to keep your distance) and generators/power tools are working as intended now. Sounds are working again too, since apparently the original download had been missing some of them - the background "music" is especially a good mood setter. The really great thing is the update added a bunch of extra content (extra mission sites and new buildings and such, some new guns), which is really surprising for such an early update to a $10 game - that's Kerberos for you.

The game is really quite fun. It was fun even before the patch. There is just something entertaining about raiding a fast food place, shooting up the zombified fast food worker with your 9mm, grabbing a jar of pickles and a slab of bacon, and hightailing it out before the zombies drawn in by the gunshots notice you. It isn't the traditional boring zombie shoot'em'up where you run around blowing things away, you have to pick your battles and be stealthy here. If you shoot every zombie you see you'll spend too much time looking for ammunition and never find enough fellow survivors to make the last stand. The traps are quite fun too - I especially like the Bouncer, a gas canister powered door trap that blasts a piece of metal at the zombies when they bash the door off its hinges - sending both the door and the zombies flying. Is it worth the $10? Definitely. I would have paid three times that and been happy.

Rough? Yep. Low end graphics? You betcha. Fun? Oh my goodness yes. This is not a zombie shooter. This is a zombie run the heck away-er. The latest version fixed a large number of the initial bugs, and I'm sure another update is in the works.

Did I mention this game was 10 dollars? This is an experiment in form over function. Do you want shiny things or thought provoking gameplay? If you answered the prior - you might want to skip this one. If you answered the latter, this is a game worth checking out.

Build up your resources, strengthen your bases defenses. RTFM. Recruit survivors. The magic zombie horde is coming. You'd best prepare yourself.

The developers chose to work on a concept that has thus far been ignored by other companies in favor of run-and-gun ad infinatum. I'm at a loss when I see a reviewer ripping this title at $10, and in most cases it is because it does not fit their mold of a $40 title.

Fort Zombie is perfect for those of us who grew up fans of Night of the Living Dead and other Romero flicks. On initial release it is clunky and I think they had to meet a deadline, hmmm..like no other company has done that before? A patch is coming out today or tomorrow with further updates a usual practice from Kerberos. The graphics are no where near cutting edge, but they don't need to be. The sound, except for gunshots and background noise is misssing, due to an installer glitch, and will be fixed in the patch. The game lags on some systems (not mine) but a mix of fixes in the patch, people updating their drivers and tweaking their settings will fix it. This games entertains me and I hope and pray that the updates keep coming like with Sword of the Stars.

Best described as a game with a good concept but with very poor execution.

Fort Zombie tries to do something great but the huge amount of bugs, glitches, performance issues, lack of sound ( there is no sound apart from gunshots and zombie bites) and shallow gameplay.

As it is right now it is probably not even worth the small price tag but after a few patches down the line I'm sure fort zombie is more than worth the 10€.

I have to admit that I'm pleasantly surprised at the challenge and depth in this very economic and 3rd party-ish game. The zombies are tough, survival is tough, and building up to the final showdown is great fun. It takes a few tries to get the game mechanics, but the manual is very helpful and the rest you'll find out in game. Definitely a must for Zombie survival fans!

Ok what can i say about fort zombies, i won this game in a comp and have to say although it has an indie feel to it it is still full of great ideas and great gameplay. Yes the camera could be better as it can be hard to see where you are going at times but one may think this is ment as to make the game that more harder and scarier and at the end of the day the developers even say that you should run away from zombies when you can. The graphics althouhg outdated are still not too bad especially for an indie game and you can shoot individual parts off zombies which is always fun. This gets off too a slow start but give it a try and keep with it and you will see what a great title this tries to be. Worth the money imo.

I'm a Zombie Fan fiend so I decided to give this game a go. For those of you who like Zombie games you may or may not know of a Flash Game called The Last Stand and The Last Stand 2 by Armor games, Fort Zombie is like a hybrid of that and UFO Enemy Unknown/ Jagged Alliance (without the turn-based stuff).

It took me a while to get it running as you have to update Microsoft .Net manager and some other plug-ins (all available on Kerebos website, their forum has all you need to get it running) The game itself is buggy as hell and is screaming out for a patch or a mod to fix some issues but its only in its infant stage so i won't hold that against it.

You basically pick a generic caracter and give him a career (soldier, cop, doctor etc.) to get skills, then you pick a base and after a quick tutorial you have to run a gauntlet through a Zombie filled town to get to your chosen Fort to start the game proper. Then it becomes a race against the clock to get more survivors on your side (they don't always want to join you even if you bust your a$$ to try save them) find better weapons and pick up supplies all the while you have to assign tasks to get barricades built in your spare time (a bit like Jagged Alliance)

All in all its keeping me entertained and with a couple of fixes in the future it could be a classic.

IMO its worth the 10 bucks. Some nice touches to like HOI3 & Majestic 2 posters in shops. The Zombies have their own traits too like jogger zombies who are fast runners, or zombies in American Football gear who try charge you. There are also Soldier and Cop zombies who are armed, so be aware. Happy Hunting.

I do like this game quite a bit despite its drawbacks. It feels like an Indie game but has Kerberos and Paradox attached to it which is a little confusing (but seeing Sword of the Stars posters in houses is a neat touch) as Fort Zombie does not present itself as a polished and finished studio quality game. The graphics are very dated, the camera is ornery, and it runs rather choppy on my system -- which is a capable machine and can run newer games such as Overlord 2, Empire Total War and Tropico 3 with nary a framerate skip. Go figure.

That being said, it is enjoyable although it is very challenging. I see what the developers were trying to do and the idea is solid but the presentation and gameplay is a bit wonky. I can forgive the flaws, however, and enjoy the game.

For $10, it is a very solid and entertaining zombie shooter and strategy game. Break out the beer and pretzels, don't be a gaming snob, and have fun with Fort Zombie.
