Faces of War is a good game, and very much like the Men of War games. It is much less polished and unrefined than the MoW games, but it is still worth playing for the extra missions.

This game has a lot in common with the 'Men At War' series, even in interface. As a fan of those games, I enjoyed this one, though it felt a bit simplistic and easy by comparison. If new to the games, I'd recommend starting with this one so that you're not underwhelmed.

Faces of War is RTS where you control soldiers on the individual level. Rather than just point and click you can micro manage your soldier from where he looks, what gun to use, what stance to use and even control them directly. Though it's done in a way that's not tedious or overbearing.

Having so much control over equipment makes missions much more interesting. For instance, if you kill a soldier, you can take his ammo and weapons equipping your troops on the fly. If a piece of armor pops up you can run back and grab a rocket launcher from a squad you just killed.

You don't just control soldiers either, as their are many vehicles at your command. You also control the individual crew members in vehicles as well, which is a nice touch. A tank requires a commander, gunner and driver for instance and many missions have great variety for keeping you on your toes.

The game also feels intense and realistic. Rather than gunning down hundreds of soldiers with an elite squad, you engage realistically. You have to take cover and flank machine gun nests, as well as try to get on the flanks to hit weak spots in armor. It manages to make even small encounters white-knuckle affairs. Even though the difficulty can be grueling at times, you can save your game wherever you like and completing the missions are very fulfilling.

Face of war is a good game, similar to company of heroes and man of war series. It does offer some challenging tactical battles, loads of physics-driven mayhem and the possibility to control your units. The problem is those features don't really do enough to separate Faces of War from the other World War 2 RTS games that have been released in the last years. A good game but not the best around.

This game uses the same system, interface and style of gameplay that went on to become the popular 'Men At War' RTS series. If you are a fan of those games then you will probably enjoy this but it maybe too easy for veterans of the series. If you haven't played any of those games though, this is a pretty good (and cheap) starting point. Entertaining but ultimately, simplistic.

Great game mechanics, great graphics, lots of toys to play with and enough missions. Only thing that may bother is that the game quite hard when compared to today's standards where all the games practically play themselves through. If you like Men of war -series then this is a must.

One of the games that surprised me in 1C Game Pack, I thought it was just another strategy title but it turned out to be much interesting war experience.

The way you are in control is amazing, although I can't say that everyone would love it. The graphics are good enough, and the physics ar really worth mentioning.

Go for it, as it is one of few titles that I would recommend even buying seperately from the 1C Pack.

In some sense the prequel to Men of War. A superb RTS with spectacular physics. Even considering its older, it still gets you some surprising extras in picking up enemy weapons, artillery and tanks.

Faces of War review

By Dshiller posted 12th August 2012

Faces of War is great, period. It's a traditional action-oriented RTS except for one thing: physics are entirely simulated. If you fire a missile at a tank's turret, then it will only remove its ability to shoot. If your guys are hit by a rocket launcher, they go flying.

Covers are present and it's standard procedure to have your guys behind any sort of cover you can find. This doesn't make them safe though, since a well-placed missile or grenade can destroy the cover- be it a wall, a tank, or a trench.

I think the physics emulation is Faces of War's best aspect. Make no mistake though: it's an action game presented in top-view. By pressing the Control key, you can directly control any soldier of your squad: move with the WASD keys, fire with the mouse button.

There are no resources and instead to get more soldiers should yours die, you'll need to press a button that calls a nearby ally to your squad. If your squad is the entire army in the mission, then you better manage them well.

Environments are varied, and that's something that often gets overlooked. Seeing there's three campaigns (Allies, Axies and Soviets - being published by a Russian company, that's understandable they weren't under Allies), you'll go through France's countryside, Germany's city (and ultimately Berlin), and Russia's winter steppes.

You can also accomplish your objectives any way you like. The whole mission map is open, and it's only a matter of knowing your tactics. There are often several ways of advancing and this was intentional.

There's a lot more good points about this game, such as the multiplayer... but you get the idea.

There are a few glitches though. The HUD can be hard to navigate unless you know your shortcuts, and sometimes a few strange things happen.

For example, you'll see your soldiers crawl even though you gave the order to sprint. This adds a few more casualties to your retreat. When you tell them to heal themselves, they'll just stand where they are even if it's under enemy fire, and the most annoying thing is that pathfinding can be glitchy: instead of, say, crawling behind cover to reach another building, they'll crawl in front of the cover thus exposing themselves to enemy fire.

But if you can forgive the glitches, you'll find an extremely great game that deserves more attention.

I was familiar with the Men at War series of tactical rts games before trying this prequel and was impressed at how solid a game it it. Simple but not dumbed down and steps ahead in terms of strategy than say the C&C games. I have to admit to being a little worn out when it comes to this genre but I would recommend this game to anyone who likes commanding virtual armies.

The sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of WW2, and the prequel to the Men of War series where Best Way really hit their stride, Faces of War is an interesting middle point, more advanced than the earlier game but less polished than the latter. It's a RTS mix of Commandos and Company of Heroes(without the base building)in which you usually have a limited number of units to try and carry out various objectives, be it repelling an enemy attack or sending infiltrators to blow up something behind enemy lines. There is even an added RPG inventory style system where you can pick up various equipment and weapons from bodies and caches and repair vehicles, sabotage things etc. It's also quite hard but a Commandos veteran won't find it any worse than what he has been used to. Graphics are still pleasing to the eye even after 6 years and the gameplay is great.

The Men of War prequel. It's an RTS with heavy doses of micromanagement of your forces and a far more tactical scope than other RTS of this scale. You can give very specific orders to your units and not just general move there fire at that orders. The world is believable, the graphics are good, the gameplay is good and if you want a thinking man's RTS game with a tactical approach, then this is a good game to start.

Faces of War is the second installment in the Men of War series. Wait, what? Sounds odd but it's actually true. The Men of War series started with the Codemasters-published title Soldiers: Heroes of WWII. Faces of War was its improved and expanded sequel, before the series was renamed to "Men of War". The game looks and play pretty much like every other game in the series, making it very easy to get into for anyone who's played another game in the series. You'll probably miss some of the improvements made in the more recent games, but Faces of War remains a thoroughly enjoyable tactical WWII game.

Faces of War review

By vvhitevvolf posted 10th November 2011

I believe Faces of War is the first game in the "of war" games, along with Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. It was followed by games like Men of War and Theater of War and I think it is a great place for people to start the series. It has a good tutorial that explains how to play the game. If I had to give a quick summary of Faces of War I would describe it like a mix of commandos and company of heroes.

You control a small squad of soldiers similar to commandos and each soldier has his own strengths like in that game except it's not quite as focused on having each soldier only being able to perform certain actions. With that said, you still have a lot of options at your disposal. You can take direct control of each individual soldier and have him use items he comes across throughout the missions. You can search dead soldiers for items like health packs, ammunition, grenades and weapons. You can also take control of tanks, jeeps and machine gun nests ect. that you come across. This really makes the game interesting and makes it stand out from games like Company of Heroes.

Faces of War is much more action packed than commandos and that's where it is similar to Company of Heroes. You don't build bases like CoH but like CoH you are usually having to react quickly and think about where to position your troops to keep them alive while dealing with a variety of dangerous enemies as you progress through the level. Faces of War is much more intense because you won't be calling in wave after wave of cannon fodder to accomplish your mission like in CoH.

Faces of War will require some strategy as you will almost always be outnumbered and outgunned. Also, the environments are destructive as seen in CoH so hiding in one spot to long may lead to some tense moments as you find yourself exposed after having your cover destroyed. The levels are well designed and offer a wide variety of missions. You might be sneaking into a base at night on one mission and driving a tank the next. It's surprising that this game was not more popular because I find it to be just as good as CoH.

The only real flaws I have with Faces of War is that the AI pathing is sometimes pretty bad. You tell your troops to move to an area and they run directly in front of dangerous enemies instead of trying to move using the safest path. So that requires some micromanagement. Also the commands take some getting used to. Getting your soldiers to do what you want sometimes feels more difficult than it should. Especially when you are under fire and in that moment every second counts. But of course the more you play the better you get at the game and the controls will get easier, so stick with it.

Finally, the graphics are really good considering how old the game is and the sounds of the war going on around you are all done really well. The voice acting is one downside to the game because they don't get the accents correct for each campaign type . There are 3 campaigns to tackle. Russian, German and Allies and they are all fun and provide many hours of gameplay. Faces of War is a great game for anyone who is looking for some good old WW2 RTS action and at the price its going for it may just surprise you how such a great game slipped through the cracks. I highly recommend Faces of war and give it a 8.5 out of 10.

This game was unknown to me when it was first released. It was only by accident that i stumbled upon it due to the fact company of heroes took all of the lime light. However this game is so much better. This is a complete WW2 strategy game and should be rated with the best.

It is laid out in the same way as men of war with the graphics pretty much at the same level. However the campaigns are more interesting than men of war especially the axis campaign which focus on late war Europe (market garden etc)

Very Good Game

By Gatti100 posted 26th August 2011

Faces of War is an extremely well presented game. This game is similiar to such games as Soldiers at War, etc. The graphics are very good, although it is not as good as the latest war strategy games such as Company of heroes. This is to be expected because, this game preceded those. The musical score in the game is excellent and one of the better background music pieces you will come across in any game. That's how good it is. The game has one of the better in-game tutorial and more game companies should follow this lead. Many already do, but some games are shockingly lacking in this department.

The game does require patience, and can be unforgiving if you make mistakes, however that may not be a bad thing for some gamers, who like a dose of realism in their games. If so then faces of war will not dissapoint. All in all this is a quality production, and if you are a fan of the genre, you will not be dissapointed. This will be a welcome addition to your game collection. At this price you simply can't go wrong. This is the type of game where if you are not a fan of this type is a three stars. If you are a fan, then four stars. No doubt.

The second brother in the family, after Soldiers - Heroes of WW2 and before Men of War, Faces of War is a nice introduction to this awesome series. From the snowy hills of the Battle of the Bulge to the siege of the fortress of Brest-Litovsk, be ready to command your men in some of the most exciting action ever seen in a RTS ! Destroy tanks, drive tanks, fend off assaults, prepare ambushes, lead a breakthrough, make a surprise raid ! Essentially the more explosive and higher octane companion of the Commandos series (which sadly ended abruptly after the lackluster Strike Force).

- Men of War meets Company of Heroes -

No, not really, but similarities are there. Faces of War is a good enough RTS that depicts WWII themes. The graphics are still appealing to the eye and what I like the most is that this isn't only an RTS - the game allows you to put yourself in the shoes of a real soldier from that era. The sound is excellent, the AI is above average and, best of all, almost everything that's above ground can be destroyed to some level. If you're into the WWII and impossible odds and unpredictable outcomes, Faces of War should probably be on your list of to-play games.

This is the WW2 strategy Best Way produced before striking gold with the similarly complex and demanding Men of War series.

In truth it's not all that different to the Men of War games. The mechanics, graphical style and interface are all familiar enough. It also has a similar level of polish (and equally bad voice acting).

The only reason this game disappeared into obscurity on release was that it was released in the same month as the rather more intuitive and generally just awesome Company of Heroes. CoH is a titan of the RTS subgenre and it was inevitable that Faces of War couldn't withstand such a release date misstep as that.

So at the time Faces of War was surplus to requirements and wasn't given the time it needed for people to really appreciate it for what it is.

But on the bright side that does at least now mean you can pick up a bargain. So do it!

This is one of the best tactical games out there, in my opinion. It is always fun during a heated firefight to sneak a single soldier up to the enemy's flank manually tossing grenades (admittedly, the AI is not so good with grenades), then spraying any survivors with an SMG.

Vehicle combat is also breathtaking, with very realistic damage depending not only on the gun but where the shell hits, and from what angle...if your Sherman takes a glancing blow from a Panther, it might just survive. For wheeled vehicles, if your wheel gets shot off you are left with a metal bunker-I was once playing co op with a friend and had stolen a German half track; a front wheel got blown off so I had to sit there tossing 37mm shells at the enemy to cover my friend who was advancing with infantry.

Playing co op is a VERY good part of the game-it allows you to do coordinated attacks on different flanks, which is very useful in attacking heavy defensive positions.

However, the main flaw in the game is, to me, the atrocious voice acting, so much so I would give it 4 stars. Everything else, the graphics, the physics, the gameplay, is all great to me.

I had delayed on getting this game for a long time, and after getting it and playing it I have no idea why I delayed.

This game is to tactical rts as Hearts of Iron is to grand strategy.

I was utterly amazed at the control and detail you have in relation to your soldiers and the enviroment.

I don't see mentioned alot is that you can actualy steal enemy vehicles that have been abandoned or disabled.

The damage model system for vehicles is extremely extensive, as well as the armour penetration table. A 45mm won't penetrate a Panther from the from for example.

Some of the controls are a bit odd but it doesn't take much time to figure them out.

I havn't tried the arcade mode, instead switching it right to tactics mode, and it can be very difficult. If you are not adept at quickly managing multible troops in a very short ammount of time you will have difficulty.

I assume arcade mode is easier but I can't vouch for that.

Over all the game is an absolutely brilliant tactical RTS, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

Faces of War is a good game. Chronologically, it was developed and released after Soldiers: heroes of World War 2. It has the squad based action of Soldiers, but it has lots of allied soldiers fighting alongside your squad. So, this game lies somewhere between Soldiers and Men of War.

If you like large battles but don't want to control lots of men, this is the game for you in the series. Also, the destructability and attention to detail is what makes the series great (i.e. tanks have good frontal armour and terrain destructability where things can be blown up and used for cover).

Faces of War review

By keeveek posted 22nd August 2010

Better than Soldiers. Many people say that Faces of War are worse, because its not as much focused on commanding a small group of soldiers. I see it as a advantage, because action goes pretty fast, everytime on the screen there are dozens of soldiers, vehicles and so on, which looks like a real warfare.

The graphics are good. This is not the level of company of heroes, but explosions, units, textures are smooth and you couldn't have any problems with recognizing them.

The weaponry sounds like real - each piece of weapon has unique sound - you don't even need to look on the screen to know what's going on.

The speeches are the only weaknes of the game. Sure, the unites are speaking in language of their nationality, but in the briefings they all talk english - and they talk bad, with funny and annoiyng voices.

The game is hard for the begginers but when you learn it - you will love it.

Strongly recommend for the fans of tactical rts games.

Before you embark on any of Men of War series game, you must play this one first. Faces of war has a very good tutorial and teach you how to play the game.

It has an OK graphic and good physics. In fact if you hit a tank turret with bazooka, you can see it sent flying damaging surrounding things.

The only con I see is that you can die easily and the awkward control where all action is done using left click instead of right click in usual RTS games and there are no way to set this in the settings.

Direct control is better suited for tank battle. For infantry battle, it is best to let the soldier aim for itself. I found that the shoot much accurately than using direct control.

Voice over? Well not quiet that good. But the games is ok and it works in windows 7 great.

Each soldier has an inventory, enabling you to customize their equipment to suit your needs on the battlefield. You are able to commandeer just about anything on the battlefield as long as it isnt destroyed such as tanks, jeeps, trucks, artillery and even heavy machine guns. This would allow you to form your strategy on approaching your objectives. Overall, this is a great game for those strategy game lovers seeking a good challenge.

Faces of War is a great RTS game, having many things in common with Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2, one of my ever-favourites. The single player campaign is very cineastic and intense, the only drawback here is that the players units are a lot better than the enemy units (1 of your men will easily win against 3 enemies, even on hard). Men of War, the successor of this game, has done this better.

Faces of War is a truly different game than the other World War II shooters. In FoW, one controls a squad rather than a single soldier, creating a more authentic approach to fighting in 1944 Europe. The game is very thorough, with nice graphics, an above-average AI, realistic physics, and a variety of missions and weapons. The only thing that lost it a star was the fact that it can be hard to handle all the soldiers at the same time in a raging battle. 4/5.

By Archonsod posted 19th January 2010

If you've been wondering what all the fuss is about with Men of War this is an excellent way to try the waters without spending too much. As with all games in the series, you get solid tactical action with a great physics system. While your troops always benefit from your direct control, the AI remains competent enough to hold it's own (just don't expect it to use grenades or switch weapons by itself). The difficulty wavers throughout the campaigns, but when you're having this much fun it's easy to ignore.

Thanks to a realistic approach to the physics things like where you hit a tank matter, and of course seeing the battlefield torn up as the fight wears on is amazing. Highly recommended if you enjoyed the more thoughtful approach of Company of Heroes.
