Front Mission Evolved review

There are emblems to collect in the story and ranks to crawl through in multiplayer, but Front Mission Evolved just feels like a flat experience. The big ol’ mechs are here if you have a hankering to boost around and smash stuff, but it’s nothing revolutionary and doesn’t feel like a full-fledged game at times with its less-than-stellar story and matches that limp on.

Might be disappointed if you're comparing to the turn based games but its still pretty fun TPS. The character models during FMVs aren't as good as the usual Square flavor but the wanzers move good and there's alot of customization. MP is pretty dead though.

This is one shiny failed attempt to broaden the appeal of an IP. About the only thing they manage to succeed at is scaring away people that do actually care about this franchise. And for what? A broken ass game riddled with tedious gameplay, awkward controls and terrible mission design. Stay far away from this crap, no matter how cheap it might get.

Never trust a Western developer to do a Japanese franchise. It's like making Marvel Comics do a Gundam manga. If you foget that this is Front Mission... Gameplay-wise, it can be fun with lots of customization like the original and even multiplayer that is similar to Call of Duty (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Domination, HQ). Controls are intuitive and very straight forward. Graphics look dated. And cutscenes aren't what you'd expect from a Square Enix title. That's because it's developed by a Western studio. There is no attention to detail especially at the character rendering aspect. PS2 Front Mission have better cutscenes. In summary, the game is not great and not recommended for Front Mission fans like me. If you think it is a total blasphemy moving from tactical RPG to action, then engaging a Western developer is even more blasphemous.

It's fun for about 4 hours

I give this game 3 stars. for what it sets out to be it does well. It reminds me of "Gunmetal" Its fun but wares off after a while. So if you can get it on sale and like Arcade/Mech action then go for it.

Not bad, Not great fun for about 4 hours

A Passable Mech Shooter

By Andy117 posted 4th December 2012

A disappointing lack of any of Front Mission's staples - like, for example, not being a third-person shooter - will render this game pretty much on par with the crimes of Starbreeze's Syndicate and the proposed X-COM first-person shooter for fans of the series. For everyone else, or fans of the mech genre... it's not bad. The acting is awful - ear-gratingly so - and the graphics are irredeemably crusty in some places. But the level of mech customization is fairly impressive, and the action passes by at an impressive pace. Being able to step out of your mech for a bit of fresh air and cover-based shooting is fairly innovative. Really, the worst thing this game does is be somewhat dull in spots, but it has satisfying gunplay and a cool world and you could do a hell of a lot worse than Front Mission Evolved. ...if you're a Front Mission fan, though, I'd avoid this one unless you really want to depress yourself.

Despite many fans of the series not liking this, i quite enjoyed it. It's not like other games in the series so don't buy it thinking you're getting a strategy game. It's a light strategy, heavy action, mechwarrior style game. The only downside for me is that the servers are dead, there's no online community and so no way to play multiplayer which I think would have been really enjoyable.

The single player campaign is enjoyable and worth it when it goes on sale.

I was surprised when this game came out - the Front Mission series is well-loved, and to deviate from the overhead turn-based format seemed almost like sacrilege. Really, though, it just makes the game feel similar to another well-loved series: Armored Core. If it's the type of game you like, it can be a lot of fun. For most people it ends up being too difficult, however.

This game gets a lot of hate for not being like any of the other Front Mission games in the series. The others are turn based strategy, while this one is an action/shooter with mech customization/combat and on-foot missions. Personally, I found the on-foot missions to be very boring, but the mech combat is decent enough. The game's graphics are sub-par, I was a bit overwhelmed by them.. and I hate to say it but it has performance problems even on some high-end PCs. It wasn't optimized very well, so it may run poorly for you, or may run great for you without any issues depending on your luck.

The lip syncing for the audo is a bit off, but otherwise the voice acting isn't terrible, and the story is bearable. If you love mech action, this is a game I'd recommend getting cheap.

Multiplayer comes with basic shooter game types like deathmatch, team deathmatch, domination, and supremacy, along with an experience-point system where you earn ranks over time. There isn't anything here you haven't seen before. Sure, you're dealing out all the death at the controls of a giant robot instead of at the end of a soldier's rifle, and some of the maps feature cool space stations and futuristic cities for backdrops. But other than that, this is the same multiplayer found in many other console shooters. The only noteworthy difference here is length. Matches are structured to keep you playing for a long time, particularly domination, where the need to earn 1,000 points to win a standard match can keep you glued to the couch for going on half an hour. You'll also be playing for ages if you want to move up in rank. Experience points aren't doled out by the bushel for kills and wins, so expect to put in many, many hours if you want to get into the high ranks.

Front Mission Evolved review

I bought the game on sale with a 50% discount couple weeks ago, mainly because the price was low and I thought it would be fun to try out a new setting (sci-fi in this matter). I was amazed by the game, but there were some aspects of the game I didn't particulary enjoy.

First off, I'll start by pointing out the good aspects of the game.

Front Mission Evolved offers a medium lenght campaign with plenty of diversity and customization in missions. The level of customization amazed me to the point where I spent more time customizing the mech than playing the mission itself. Graphic quallity of this game is decent.

The bad sides of the game include:

- game difficulty

While some could take a game being easy as a plus, I personally didn't. The game was really easy to complete, even on hard difficulty.

- mission monotony

Most missions were really well made, with plenty of action and an interesting plot, but I found certain missions (bossfights) extremely boring.

- lack of multiplayer

The singleplayer part of the game was enjoyable, but there isn't much to do after finishing it. While the game does feature a multiplayer mode, nobody plays it. It took me 2 hours of waiting in the lobby only to find one person showing up.

The game is well polished, but it isn't worth the price tag for the low level of enjoyment you get.

You Like Big Mechs, and even more u like Big Explosions?

Then u are on the right place here. Front Mission Evolved as a Third-Person-Shooter were u walk around in Big mechanized Tanks and blow the hell out of your enemies.

Sadly there is not much more about to say. Because it is really a rather simple and short (single player campaign) Action Title from Sqare Enix

Not at all like the original Front Mission game, Front Mission Evolved is a fairly generic and tedious game with horrible voice acting that repeats often with drawn out boss battles and poor combat. Do not buy unless you 100% have to play a mech game and even then, consider other options.
