Football Manager. Always.

Football Manager is the best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made. Football Manager 2013 celebrates 20 years of games from the people at Sports Interactive by introducing an array of new features.

This year’s version allows you to take control of any club in more than 50 nations across the world and includes all of Europe’s biggest leagues as well as database of over 500,000 real-world players and staff.

As well as some landmark new features in the Career Mode, there are now new ways to enjoy your Football Manager experience.

NEW TO CAREER MODE…

Match Engine
The 3D match engine has seen huge improvements this year. Everything on the pitch looks more realistic; from the stadiums, the players’ movement, intelligence, and the way the ball moves through the air.

We’ve also introduced hundreds of new animations to make the game feel more realistic and we’ve made the whole experience more televisual by introducing new camera angles and showing the kick-off and final whistle.

Manager Roles
Another notable difference is the significant restructure of the manager’s staff and a revamp of their roles. The most obvious is that we’ve introduced the position of Director of Football into the game for the first time, which will allow managers to pass on some of their workload, such as contract negotiations, if they choose to.

In addition to this, we’ve also increased the number of specialist coaching roles within the game and given the manager greater flexibility to choose which coaches offer advice and when. The manager can also choose to complain about boardroom interference – although that particular option should probably be used sparingly.

And much more…
A brand new training system, improved international management, tones in press conferences & a new user interface.

NEW WAYS TO PLAY…

Classic and Challenge Modes
Football Manager Classic is a less time-consuming way to enjoy Football Manager. The essence of the game is exactly the same – the manager still takes charge of a squad of players and competes at whatever level he or she chooses – but they will now find that a number of their responsibilities have either been taken over by their support staff or have disappeared completely.

For example, while the player still takes charge of training in FMC, this is carried out at a 'full team' level only – there's no individual player training. And when it gets to matches themselves, there are no team talks or opposition reports... you just go straight to a game using the same 3D match engine as Career Mode. The games are played out in a quicker 'highlights only' fashion, but you can even speed this up by going straight to ‘Instant Result’.

Players who opt for Football Manager Classic will also find that they have a couple of further options in terms of how they play the game; they can either play a full open-ended ‘Career’ or they can choose to play in the new ‘Challenge’ mode.

In Challenge mode they’ll find themselves in a particular situation which will test their management skills over a shorter game time – usually half a season. Can you win a trophy with a team consisting almost entirely of kids? Or could you guide your club to safety despite being bottom of the table at Xmas?

We first introduced Challenge Mode in Football Manager Handheld 2012 and it proved to be so popular that we’ve decided to include it in FMC too.

The game will come with four free-to-play challenges, each of which feeds in to a global leaderboard.

Network Play
The brand new Network Play is fully integrated with Steam’s network functionality which means that players should be able to set up and enjoy games against their friends far more easily than before. The Network Mode also allows people to set-up special one-off leagues and cups and to import their team from their career mode, so you can now end any debate about whose FM team is better.

The deeper integration with Steam will also allow us to manage worldwide leaderboards, so, for the first time you’ll really know how good a manager you are.

Plus over 900 other new features!

Football Manager 2013™ review

By jdn.jose posted 10th May

The best football simulation by far. I have been following FM for years and they keep improving the game and it's match engine every season. I have found this years match engine to be extremely challenging to master and as such has made the experience more authentic than ever before.

Once again they have the challenges mode and this is a nice distraction from the full simulation, however I'm very impressed by the new classic mode they have implemented which is a much less time consuming simulation of being a football manager. Very useful if you just want to win the champions league over the weekend.

The fact that you can mod the game by adding graphics, kits, player faces, logos, etc has been a great move by FM since there split from CM and I love adding the mods to my game.

As every year Football Maanger is the best football managerial around, I feel that the 3d engine still not yet mature enoguh so I reverted back to Classic 2D view but the game still enjoyable and all the new functions added are worth a buy.

Again, Football Manger gives us a good game, as every year. The new game modes are very interesting. Football Manager Classic is excellent for those who want a faster-paced game or challenges for those looking for something more difficult. I'd recommend this game for anyone who likes football, whether he has played or not previous installments of the game.

New year new version. Basicly this is just a same game as it was last year. But there is two more game modes, that make playing faster and simplier. There is plenty of new staff members, updated database, new criteria to fulfill.

Yes it is still a good game. Teams are up to date and everything seems to be cool. If the game is on sale buy it. If you have 2012 version you might want to wait for 2014 version.

FM is a sport game series, so just like other sport games, new games come out every year. This year, while keeping the great formula, FM has added a lot of new features and refined quite some existing feature. A complete new game mode is added, new staff role is adde. The graphic is upgraded. Basically the game is becoming more and more friendly to new comer, while still being true to its root.

Football Manager 2013

My FM experience started with 2010 and I did play a little 2011 as well. I can't compare 2013 as much as some other people, but thus far it has been good. I don't use Classic mode, so I can't comment on that either.

It's been about a month and a half since release and the game has been updated already with 4 major patches, so things seem to be moving along nicely in terms of fixing bugs and such. I do like the greater control over the database (during game creation) as well as the overall speed of the game. On the Mac OS side of things, it seems to run fine, not any slower or faster compared to the older games it seems.

All I can say is that... if you enjoy management style games, enjoy soccer, and have some imagination, then this type of game is for you. FM will always be one of the best sports management games, so if the genre interests you, then this is a good place to start.

Football Manager 2013™ review

It’s genuinely getting to the point where reviewing Football Manager 2013 is difficult, because we want to love it but it’s just so similar to what came last year. If only the folks at Sports Interactive would pull their thumbs out and… just a second… Ah.

So Football Manager 2013 does actually add a whole new couple of modes to the game as well as making multiplayer better than it ever has been in the series (though admittedly still not a focus). Seems our pre-prepared stock intro won’t fly here. Damn.

Classic mode is the big new addition, made for the very developers who created the game because they don’t have the time to play it anymore. Oh, the public with no time too – it’s not a totally selfish creation. It’s a stripped-back version of the traditional Football Manager experience: less complex than the main simulation mode, but offering a great deal more than the Handheld spin-off does. The closest lazy comparison we can come up with is that it’s like Championship Manager 01/02, but more complex.

Gone are press conferences, avoided are teamtalks, messing about with minutiae is a Thing You Don’t Do and, if you don’t care to sit through them, you can get instant match results too. Yet somehow, some way, you still feel like you’re getting a solid, full management game.

Football Manager 2013™ review

Without exaggeration, it's possible to complete a season of Classic mode in a day or less. This is largely thanks to reduced levels of media interaction, the complete removal of team talks, and the option to auto-resolve matches, taking you straight to the end of each game and displaying the final result in a matter of seconds. This may sound like Football Manager for Dummies, but to think of it in such a way is to do the mode a great disservice. Yes, you can fully simulate matches in seconds and completely remove yourself from player training schedules, but success and failure still ultimately rest on the work you put in over the days leading up to each match, and whether your team actually wants to play for you. Classic mode or not, good and bad managers still exist.

Underpinning Classic mode is the same set of algorithms and painstakingly categorized data that sits at the foundation, meaning the same level of flexibility is afforded to you when it comes to judging, buying, and selling new members of playing and backroom staff. For anyone who has stuck with the series year after year, seeing the same depth of information presented and harnessed in a slightly different way can be initially quite alarming and raises more than the odd question about why this mode is being introduced at all, and whether the game will be streamlined further from here on out.
