Be the hero in your own cinematic epic of action, tension and terror. A mysterious paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound, taking hostages but issuing no demands. The government responds by sending in a Special Forces team only to have them obliterated. Live footage of the massacre shows an inexplicable wave of destruction tearing the soldiers apart. With no other recourse, the elite F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) team is assembled to deal with the extraordinary circumstances. They are given one simple mission: Evaluate the threat and eliminate the intruders at any cost.

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point Extraction Point kicks off where the original game ended – with a bang. As the helicopter which the F.E.A.R. team is on attempts to leave the vicinity, it instead winds up crashing. The F.E.A.R. team is thus forced to seek out an alternate extraction point, all the way battling the now free Alma and her paranormal minions across a destroyed city.

F.E.A.R. As a member of a secondary F.E.A.R. team, you are brought in to discover more information regarding the secret project at the ATC facilities.

F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon review

An awesome FPS that includes slow motion for accurate shots, the multiplayer is what I enjoyed the most when I bought the first time on my PS3, one of my most played games. Until of course F.E.A.R 2 came out.

A fun shooter game with some horror elements, I first played F.E.A.R. on the 360, and enjoyed it enough that after moving all my gaming to the PC I bought it all sale here. The shooting is nice and tight, with some squad based AI from the enemy that makes most firefights interesting. Although the graphics are a little dated (the game came out 6 years ago), they are still nice enough to look at, and occasionally the gimmicky jump scares and creepy voices can provide some nice thrills. It never felt overly scary, as it's hard to feel threatened when carrying around awesome assault rifles. F.E.A.R. is one of the better shooter experiences a person can have for 10 bucks, and if you can find it on sale, you should definitely pick it up.

Even though this game is quite old it still holds up pretty well, decent graphics for being old, nothing that turns you down unless you're a complete graphic whore. The gameplay is fun and solid, the weapons handle nice, although it's quite different compared to Call of Duty and Battlefield in the way that you just can't run and gun or that'll get you killed. The game wasn't scary according to me, the atmosphere was creepy but no significant scares, but overall a very good game, a must buy!

This is a very well done game. It actually makes me jump more than the scary movies do these days. I recommend it to anyone who wants a thriller with a good plot line and many things to shoot.

In terms of gameplay, it's pretty standard fare, and your character is about as bland as any other shooter as well - but the world itself is unique, with flashes straight out of a horror movie, feet standing at the top of the ladder you're climbing, and enemies with stealth cloaks that will make you wet yourself. I was kind of bothered by the seperation of the horror and shooter elements, however - you don't often find yourself in a firefight while creepy stuff is going on, which makes you feel safer when bullets are flying at your head than while you're wandering around in the dark.

Great shooter with a lot of feeling.

F.E.A.R. never became the big hit it deserved to be, but enough for two sequels (well a sidequel and a sequel). It took me a while before playing this some years ago, but I was pleasantly surprised. Especially the feeling of the weapons in the game. The sound effects make it so it really feels like firing a gun, not just clicking a mouse. There are some great moments in the game. I don't scare easily but I admit some parts are a bit eerie. It a very well executed game, and eventhough it might be dated by now I sincerely recommend this to any FPS or horror fan!

F.E.A.R is a first person shooter with horror elements and Matrix-like Bullet Time.

The Player takes controll of a Face and Voiceless Soldier called Pointman who is part of the paranormal military devison F.E.A.R.. You and your Team are send out to catch Paxton Vettel, a Psychic whos job it was to lead an Army of cloned Soldiers via psychic command.

The Horrorpart of the game shows itself in Form of a little girl, that looks a lot like the girl from the ring-movies. You meet her in the hallways staring at you or see her slaughtering Soldiers and Members of your Squad with incredible powers.

The gameplay itself is pretty basic, go here, shoot that, track back to turn of a valve to clear a path. The encounters with the enemy solders are alright but they lack a lot of variety. But the Bullettimemechanic of the game brings a lot of fun as you mow down lines of Soldiers. It is very satisfying to use. The A.I. of the Soldiers is above average and they manage to pick up quite a fight. The graphics are somewhat dated and the game tends to look very grey in grey but it runs smoothly. The story itself is somewhat confusing and lacks some depth and emotional investment as your player avatar never reacts to the horror that surrounds him.

In Conclusion, F.E.A.R. is a good Shooter, with an old element, that is still a lot of fun to use and a horrortheme that makes it stand out of its competition. If you are interested in the theme of psychic military warfare or a light horror-experience, give this game a shot.

Very good FPS with a couple little problem. 1) Screen resolution....If you have a LCD monitor that does 1920x1080 that game isn't designed for that ratio and it lets you know. 2) When moving backwards sometimes it restarts the current level/mission.

All in all a good game though and well worth the asking price.

FEAR has good combat, but takes a very long time to ramp up.

By blobolonga posted 12th December 2011

FEAR pits you against tons and tons of squad guys (you know, the kind you hear chatting to each other all the time) inside nondescript offices, derelict buildings, and poorly lit warehouses. There is a strong emphasis on taking cover, and buffing your accuracy with features like a "concentrated aiming" button and Matrix-style slowmo. Melee attacks are effective at taking out individual guys without the rest of the squad immediately knowing that you're there. So far, so good.

There are two problems. One: central to the game is this omnipresent Scary Girl (TM) who can trap you within psychic visions. She just wasn't that scary or threatening. Two: the game doesn't really go anywhere until close to the end. The missions are long and mostly linear, full of dudes to shoot but light on plot progression and environmental variety. At one point, I looked up how many levels ("Intervals", it calls them) the game had, and was surprised to find that I was nearly two-thirds through.

The squad guys themselves are pretty well executed, but putting them in what essentially amounts to The Ring: The First Person Shooter isn't necessarily the best use of them.

If you buy this game, you will get a 30+ hours single-player because this stuff include original game and 2 expansions. However, when i installed this game, it just placed a shortcut of original Fear, so to play expansions, you must run .exe files in 2 folders xp1 and xp2 in game directories. Moreover, to play multiplayer (which has quite few servers active) you don't need download Fear Combat from joinfear.com when it is installed in game directory as well.

It is a horror FPS shooter, quite linear, you often have only way to go ahead. About FPS, it is a very good shooter game, various weapons, slow-motion ability, blood and gore... it makes me addicted xD. About horror, if you could, i recommend play this game at midnight with a good headphone ( game sounds is amazing); but if you easily to be scared (likes me), should play at day and turn off volume.

At last, it is a decent and worthy game at its price

FEAR is what you get when you combine the FPS mechanics with the survival horror atmosphere. In its time was one of the best and most innovative shooters (due to the introduction of bullet time in a FPS and aggressive enemh AI) around today I believe it has its own place amongst the genres classics.

The graphics may not hold up too well with today’s standards but the sound is still top notch and the AI is quite challenging and smart especially in the higher difficulties. I don't think anyone who is fond of the old times when PC FPS games were ruling supreme will not like this game. Be aware that the Gamersgate copy contains both FEAR Extraction and FEAR Perseus Mandate (don't look for icons in the desktop as there are none installed go straight to the installation folder) expansions so you get more bang for your buck. I am rating this with 4 stars primarily for what it was in its time rather than how it stands today. People who want something more up to date FEAR 2 maybe a better choice.

I will sum this review up with posting some technical info for the two most common problems people have with this game when trying to run it from modern machines. First is the low FPS problem which is due to a known compatibility issue with the original FEAR engine and Logitech G series keyboards and mice. To Fix this simply go into the Start menu and right-click "Computer", choose "Manage". From there, go to "Device Manager" and choose "Human Interface Devices". To get the best performance, you are going to want to disable all "HID-Compliant Device", you should not need to disable ANYTHING else.

Second is the fact that FEAR Extraction Point doesn't have native widescreen support so just go to \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\TimeGate Studios\FEARXP and open "settings.cfg" in a text editor such as Notepad. The two lines that need editing are "ScreenWidth" and "ScreenHeight". Put your widescreen resolution in there and the game will work just fine.

If I had to sum this up in one word it would be creepy. This game pulls you in the moment you load it up and never lets go. Coupled with good voice acting, good cut scenes that don't last forever, great use of environment/shadows/sound, and lastly but not least at all good AI. The bad guys actually move when you shoot at them, they hide, they shoot back. They actually are smart but not too smart, they won't kill you out right but will put up a fight unlike other FPS'es where they just stand and shoot. All and all, a great game that will creep you out, and make you feel like you really are a F.E.A.R Op.

Nice Shooter, Bad Horror

By Ghiro posted 5th November 2011

First of the gunplay in this game is very nice, every weapon has it's own strategy and you'll need to use a good portion of tacticts and to overcome enemies. Even in the endgame your basic weapons are still effective if used wisely.

The AI while not quite as good as advertised is quite a challenge and can sometimes come up with nice surpises.

The level design is also quite good and rewards exploration which gives a nice sense of non linearity, a bit less so in the expansions where levels are generally a bit more linear but have more focused combat.

The gameplay could be described as "what if Max Payne is a FPS".

Were the F.E.A.R. really falls on its nose is both the Plot and the actual Horror. The plot is full of unanswered questions and stuff that never gets quite explained, the sequels just add more question marks instead of actually explaining someting. the storytelling in general also isn't really great either.

What's worse is the actual "horror" except for a few locations in the main game, FEAR never actually is scary or creepy, since every jumpscare (And there are a lot of them) is forewarned by a slight ticking from your radio all the instances where the game tries to scare you get rather predictable after a few hours already.

FEAR is a gem on an FPS market that all too easily rehashes the same old. Atmosphere, mild horror and well brought scenes of suspense and scare are intermixed with frequent and very cool moments of FPS near future action. A mild edge of scifi, a huge dose of paranormal activity and a lot of realistic military action make FEAR a most excellent game! While FEAR 2 excells more action-wise and has the 'cool factor' even higher, this game is probably even earier than FEAR 2.

A solid FPS with 16:9 support (very rare feature for such an old game).

Not really a scary game, but the atmosphere is cool.

Very good graphic for a 2005 and a solid storyline (at least for the original game), probably better than the sequel.

The expansions (expecially Perseus Mandate) for me are just "more of the same" without any real innovation, but the worth the price!

This is a very addicting game. It has the scare factor right from the start. The more that you play the more you want to be involved in the game. It will just suck you in. I really enjoyed this game. I would recommend this to most people, but not for those who may be weak or scare easily.

Preview:

When Asian and American horror meet: F.E.A.R. is a game that pits you, the Pointman of an the eponymous F.E.A.R. organization, as you face off against the replica forces led by a mysterious man called "Paxton Fettel". Over the course of the game however, strange things will begin to happen here and there... and soon you shall find yourself immersed in a story unlike any other you've experienced before...

Gameplay:

Your typical shooter experience: go there, kill these guys, move on to the next room. However, let me tell you that despite being 5 years old now, the game showcases an incredibly smart AI, that will more often than not outwit you: exercise extreme care when dealing with those replicas!

Graphics:

The game has aged well... some few things here and there might feel a tad old, but overall you won't really feel it... and the atmosphere more than makes up for it.

Sound:

Great sound! Effects sound realistic and the eerie music and noises you hear in scary moments will surely have you glued to your seat from beginning to end.

Overall it's a 5/5 for me. Go, grab it! NOW!
