Fun action platformer

By futrstyl posted 11th December 2012

Emberwind is a fun action platformer in the vein of Mario, Sonic, etc. You'll run, jump, smash baddies, and solve minor puzzles. I had fun playing this for a couple of hours, but after that it lost steam for me. For someone who really enjoys platformers, Emberwind is a great choice. For someone who craves a deeper action, it may come up short.

Fun but sometimes frustrating

Emberwind is a solid side-scroller with tons of levels and ability upgrades, but it can be arbitrarily difficult and some of the levels aren't set up too well -- sometimes entering a door or exit will boot you to the level selection screen, which means if you haven't completed that level, you have to go back and do it all over again.

Overall a pretty good game.

A neat little game that 'borrows' heavily (cough) from kid arcades like Mario and Sonic. Still has a little of this old-fantasy hack-and-slash feel to it, as the name suggests. ('Emberwind' was a classic poetic/dreamy fantasy-sounding title last I checked). Collecting all the hidden stuff can also be a challenge. :-)

The game has decent graphics, it kind of reminded me of Donkey Kong. I pretty much lost interest after the first board. If you like that kind of game, it is for you. I remember you jump and collect tokens. My computer crashedf and I had to do a rebuild and didn;t reinstall it. If you have to use the keyboard, it seems clunky.

A classic side-scrolling platformer. Nothing too groundreaking, but the game is just fun. What this game may lack in originality it makes up in aesthetics. The artwork is great! For the price, if you're looking for a good side-scroller this is definitely a good choice.

Once upon a time, gamers weren't such a picky bunch. It wasn't unlike any one of us to spend an entire afternoon jumping around a two-dimensional world, swinging, shooting or casting our attack of choice. We didn't have any fancy pixel shaders, volumetric cloud layers, radiant AI or emergent gameplay. Nay. We jumped from platform to platform, beating every cluster of pixels in our path to death - and we liked it that way.

Emberwind takes this age-old concept and revitalizes it with fantastic sound and graphics, as well as a genuinely charming storyline. It brings to the table its own unique style which is fun and light-hearted, yet sophisticated enough to remain palatable to more mature gamers. (Although, really, who wants to be one of those?) The style is exceptionally well realized and the whole game feels remarkably cohesive, which is something that can be said about very few games today, even from the big-budget crop.

It's almost icing on the cake, then, that the gameplay is so good. Controls and special moves are fluid, easy to pick up and fun to use, and the action moves along at a clip that feels just right. Aside from trouncing goblins, you'll also be platforming in search of secret areas, collecting various power-ups, and stuffing your pockets with mountains of treasure. It would be wrong to call Emberwind "complex," but there's certainly a lot of game here, and never once does it seem to lose its focus on fun.

It's simple: if you like side-scrolling action, a colorful and funky art style, collecting power-ups and treasure, rescuing villagers, rocket-jumping gnomes, riding a giant owl and bashing silly goblins' brains in, then Emberwind is the game for you. If, however, you just can't get your head around what a bunch of nerds ever saw in this crap, and indeed find the very notion of reviving classic gameplay from the 16-bit era to be repulsive, well... Kindle and I feel for you, man. This game is awesome.

Charming and fun 16-bit era platformer - ideal on the 360 controller - perfect for kids and 'older kids' alike.

A surprisingly good, fun platformer. The flow of gameplay is excellent, and it's easy to spend an hour playing without realizing how much time has gone by. It's not a very difficult game, but mild environmental puzzles and combat are satisfying nonetheless. The graphics are charming, and run flawlessly even on my underpowered netbook.

This is a funny and very nice platformer that makes us remind of the likes of Mario, The Lost Vikings and Metal Slug.

The beautiful artwork will plunge you into an enchanting nordic world.

The gameplay is simple and time-proof, any one from 5 year-old can enjoy it. But, don't be mistaken, this game is a must have at any age.
