evil islands, the b movie of gaming
I've played far worse in my gaming days than this. The systems are okay, fair bit of character customization, lots of weapons you can customize and have built at craftsmen scattered throughout the game world. The voice acting isn't that great and neither are the graphics. They tried with it and that shines through in points. If the protagonist had been a snarky one liner kind of hero I would have enjoyed this more.
Evil Islands review
On the surface this seems like a simple Hack&Slash top-down 3d person Action RPG. But when you start playing it you quickly realise that the Hacking and the slashing will be done on you by the enemies, not the other usualy way around.
In other terms - this game is unforgivingly hard, which may appeal to some, but also offput some others.
After the initial shock though, one realizes that this game offers an interesting skill system with some difficult choices to be made, as well as an interestinly though up game world. It has a nice and working stealth system, nice equipment to be found and quest rewards really feel like rewards.
The Pros:
- interesting game world
- interesting skill system
- sufficient graphics
- interesting quests
- it runs nice on very old hardware
The Cons:
- The game world is presented with a tick too much forced humour
- the world seems very static - nothing ever changes without your doing (Din's Curse is the ideal in this respect)
- the combat feels overly difficult after a while
- too much running back and forth through long stretches of landscape
If you are looking for an interesting take on the Hack&Slash or action RPG genre, seriously consider picking up this overlooked little gem.
