The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® Game of the Year Edition review

A game with a ridiculous amount of content just got even more. The GOTY version of Morrowind allows players to travel to the capital city of Mournhold and the island of Solstheim. Combine this with the huge, open world of the original game and you have a game that will keep you busy for weeks. Character classes and skills are diverse, there are different factions and countless missions to undertake, and tons of items to collect and sell. The only downside of this game is its lackluster combat, but it is an enthralling and infinitely replayable game.

One of the best RPG´s I ever played. It is one of my all time favorites. In my opinion Morrowind has the best open-world enviroment because it is a pretty detailed and full world. You are going to discover a lot of things, just by exploring around. If you do not care much about graphics and love open-world RPG´s you should most probably give this game a try.

The island of Morrowind is a large, well-realized world rich with lore and backstory which ties in well with the lengthy main quest and many optional side quests and guild affiliations. Unfortunately, the actual game-play is boring, one-dimensional, and extremely poorly balanced. Magic is either overpowered, with single spells making entire skills like Acrobatics or Lockpicking trivial, or underpowered. In combat, magic is virtually useless unless you use really cheap tactics. Some things about the game sound good in theory, but in practice just don't work, such as skill advancement through skill use (in order to advance your magic skills to a usable level, you pretty much have to repeatedly cast spells out of combat). Fortunately, the PC version of this game has a host of mods available which patch up a lot of the game's flaws, but some of the underlying problems go unaddressed. The trick to enjoying Morrowind is not to think of it as a fun or exciting game, but more as an interactive storybook.

While it's a great game, I'd recommend skyrim or oblivion first. There is just much more to do and better character customization in those games. Only after you've played both of them extensively and enjoyed them then would I recommend this game.

The Best RPG that Bethesda has done. This was the path to follow to Oblivion and Skyrim, but is a shame that those two games were a LOT more simple than this. One of the best 3D RPGs ever made with hundreds of hours.

Classic RPG game, showing its age these days but the modding crew have done wonders with graphical updates.

I think the combat system is hit and miss but enjoyed the game apart from that.

This has to be my favorite of the Elder Scrolls series. It seems to be the most expansive and most varied in settings and characters. But, as with all Elder Scrolls games, you will lose yourself through countless hours spent in this sprawling adventure rich with plenty of exploration, discovery, and great western role-paying mechanics.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® Game of the Year Edition review

Morrowind was the first major entry into the Elder Scrolls series that I played. It was years ago, I was a teenager, and I had no clue what to do in this enormous, sprawling world. My initial attempt at playing the game ended in confusion and a sigh, putting it down and assuming it was one of those crappy games that the developers created without adding any direction or common sense to the gameplay.

I gave it another shot and realized my mistake. The game sets you up, allows you to customize your character and his/her traits to determine precisely how you want to look, fight, socialize, and play. You want to be a facesmasher? Throw some Two-Handed skill and pick a relevant birthsign for your Nord or Orc. A mage? Go for destruction or conjuration with a High Elf. Or mix and match to your heart's desire. You want to be a High Elf, even though you don't plan on ever touching a spellbook? Sure, go for it. It won't ruin your chance at crushing your enemies.

After the entry point of the game, it does well to point you in the right direction. Granted, unlike later entries that allow for fast travel and giant location markers to point out exactly where you need to go, Morrowind is more of a thinking, exploring game. Your journal serves as your quest guide and tells you what you need to do, but doesn't point you to the precise location. Instead, it'll tell you that you "need to meet Person X in Balmora to discuss yadayada", and leave it to you to find your way there - or find out what the hell Balmora is. For many, this might be a bother or an unwanted chore. For me, it was a legitimate sense of realistic exploration. When I stepped foot into the alien-like world of Morrowind, I was as lost and unsure as my character was meant to feel. Little signs and markers tell you where major cities are, so that you don't ragequit after getting too lost, but the majority of exploration is real, hard-fought exploration. And the land is so massive and strangely alien, that it really is EXPLORATION.

And aside from the unique landscapes, there's a mountain of lore and discovery to be found. From the Dunmer and their strange culture, to their unashamed worship of the demon-like Daedra gods. Dwemer, or Dwarven, ruins and relics also litter the ashen lands of Vvardenfell, allowing some study and visualizing of the past as well as the present of the Dark Elves' homeland. As a gamer who loves thought and planning being put into games like this, Morrowind was a 10/10 in that regard. You could tell that the creators put countless hours into breathing real life and history into this series - and this game itself. It saves it from being just another quest to save the land and its weird, hapless, nameless inhabitants. Instead, you learn their culture, their beliefs, and their history; and it turns them from a random people you're saving into a real, believable culture with personality - and one you actually care about saving.

The combat is what you'd expect if you've ever seen or played an Elder Scrolls title. You equip whatever type of weapon, shield, or spell and your trigger buttons or mouse clicks correspond to the actions. Whether it's planning your next spell or swinging wildly at a crazy undead blight victim, it feels like you'd expect were you in the player's shoes. And for every action, an equal and experience-giving reaction. But not in the typical points-to-levels way. Instead, the more you use a skill, the better you get at it. And you'll notice the difference. Acrobatics at level 15 leaves you a clumsy, hopping mess. At 100, you're practically Spider Man. Swing a sword when your One-Handed is at 20 and you're like a goofy little kid swinging a stick. At 100, you're a murder-machine. And spells are possibly the most affected. The more untrained you are, the fewer spells you can manage to cast. Your magicka reserve (mana pool) won't be large enough to gather the power for a stronger spell, but the more you level up your Conjuration, the less costly it will be to summon your beasts, demons, or ethereal armaments. Obviously, the other schools of magic work the same way.

Morrowind is a rare masterpiece in gaming. Not because it sold well, or because it made money; but rare because in world where even the most legendary game developers are quickly planning for profit rather than quality, this game is clearly a labor of love and intent. Quality, depth, and content are all through the roof; and if you enjoy this sort of game genre and haven't played Morrowind yet - or if you have, or you've been loving Skyrim - you owe it to yourself to ship off to Morrowind for a bit and retrace one of the best entries in the vast saga of The Elder Scrolls.

There are still quite a few people who say this is the best TES game. If you're wondering why, it's because where Skyrim dumbed down / mainstreamed spellcraft, weapon/armor skills, enchanting, and factions, Morrowind had them in a far more complicated, yet enriched and engrossing manner. While it won't appeal too much to casual players, hardcore rpg'ers get a much more immersive and personalized experience. You should also look into the "Morrowind Overhaul" mod, which updates the graphics to modern standards.

Morrowind starts you off in some pathetic one horse town and says "Go do whatever you want, we don't care." And that's what makes this game an instant hit. The actions you take have consequences, you have complete freedom to roam wherever you want, and there's plenty of treasure to find to encourage your curiosity. The graphics are high end (although they have suffered with age) and the lore is plentiful. The design of the island is also mesmerizing. You can walk through a wet marsh, sandy desert, or a massive city.

The downsides to this game come down to the combat, voice acting, and amount of characters. The combat usually comes down to frantic clicking and it can be tiresome at first as you hear a "wiff" noise every time you miss. As you level up your combat, this problem goes away. The voice acting is hardly there and you're forced to read through a massive amount of text to get anywhere. And lastly, you'll be walking through a bustling city with nary a person around. Considering the limitations at the time period, I don't think these things are that negative. It just may throw off a modern gamer.

However, for myself, I still find myself drawn to the complete freedom and wonder that permeates Morrowind. Getting this will be the best choice of your life!

Personally this game is the BEST Elder`s Scroll game aver made, much better than IV Oblivion or V Skyrim the game only lack in graphics but hey! its a 199x year made game.

Graphics: For the year the game was made i think the graphics are ok, similar to half-life series btw u can put a mod for the faces and voilá you dont have to see that ugly faces anymore!.

Gameplay: Is an eldes scroll game, you know: jump, attack, parry and explore a vast world, your abilities grow up when you make those actions and of course decisions, and i eplaix why this is the better elder scroll game ever made: You can kill everything! not only secondary and bad characters it includes the MAIN NPC too! so you cant continue yor main plot if you kill them but that doesn´t matter so much in fac ever in oblibion or skyrim you cant kill your main quest chars they only gets insconscious this feature never was introduced again in any other eleder scroll game.

Sound: The music and ambience are the best for the series i always rebember tat song that characterizes the other elders scrolls games (used in oblivion and of course Skyrim but this is the fisrt time the music is created in the series, just lisen it and your never forget it.

Final NOTE 9/10

This is definitely the most enthralling, entertaining, time-consuming, awesome, goregeous, in-depth, and just plain FUN video game I have ever come across, and I've played a lot. The expansions just add on to the original excellent non-linear adventure, and the ability to download and install even more official and unofficial mods/patches/plug-ins that also add to the game make it that much better. This game could not get any better. If you enjoy RPGs, or just any game in general, BUY THIS NOW!

Morrowind: A Modded Masterpiece

By ionface posted 23rd December 2012

This is the best single-player RPG in a decade, and is rivaled only by its successors in The Elder Scrolls series.

Although the graphics looked dated soon after release, it came with its own Construction Set, allowing for a thriving mod community to pick apart and improve on this game in every aspect.

This is one of the most heavily modded games I have, but my versions theme remains true to the original, and the detailed story and ambiance create the perfect RPG setting. I recommend patching the bugs, and improving the graphics as best your computer can handle. After that, mods can add content, or change gameplay dynamics, even recreate new worlds with stories of their own. But don't get yourself a Rainbow Dash and a Lightsaber until you've experienced the original story and characters.

If you feel this game needs something? The odds are there's a mod for doing just that. If not, start up your very own copy of the CS and use your editing skills, it's not hard to make a mod quickly. You could even ask the amazing community for a bit of help. If I had any complaints about this game, I have long since fixed them with patches or mods.

This game is an open "sandbox" type game, where there are threads of story everywhere you go, which you can choose to follow or ignore. I've played as a thief and a fisherman, their lives were never the same since they stepped off that ship. This game allows freedom, and it's a bit overwhelming at first, but a treat if you've been stuck in JRPG/MMO tunnelvision. Replay value is great, and with content mods is even greater. There have even been mods which randomly generate dungeons, now how about that? The world is a highly detailed piece of art, but it's not something static to look at, you can change things and make it your unique version.

For the true Role Player, or for the fan of epic combat moments with exploding physics and slow motion, this game has everything. There's little you cannot do, or add with the CS, and so this game and its modding community has thrived for over a decade.

In Morrowind theres no beautiful cutscenes, no characters with strong personalities, love triangles, nor fastidious megalomaniacs. It has a non-linear gameplay, with lots of freedom to move and a great variety of situations, with a spectacular length.

But Morrowind may not please everyone, its slower than usual games(Baldurs, Diablo ...), and some people could hardly bear to be hours without killing anything / anyone as may occur in Morrowind. Its nor a game to begin leveling up our character to be "cool" in the shortest possible time, theres lots of conversation, a lot of backstory and backdrop, much to read and to think and investigate.

Morrowind is a hugely profitable game with which can take you months, not because of lenght or difficulty, but by size and variety (as Bethesda said, over 250 hours of play).

Highly recommended.

Following in the tradition of the previous installments in the series, Arena and Daggerfall, Morrowind takes players on an unforgettable non-linear adventure, where the world is what they make it. Without a doubt, the greatest aspect of the game is the freedom it offers, the virtually limitless options available to role-players. Presenting the player with a highly dynamic character creation system, modeling your persona is only the beginning of your free-willed adventure. You are able to choose from a list of several classes, all with their own, unique niches, from the stealthy Khajiit to the magically endowed High Elf. Once you choose your race, you are free to choose from a class from of a list of over 20 professions, or create your very own rules and specialties for a home-made character class. After choosing your profession, you are, quite literally, free to do whatever your heart desires. Miles and miles of virtual world await you in a huge, expansive world. You may explore the giant island of Morrowind as a dashing Knight, saving one of the thousands of damsels-in-distress or bare-naked barbarians as you go. On the other hand, you may have a darker side, and it may be to your advantage to steal from the rich. Don't like someone? Well, if your heart is black enough, they will meet their demise by your blade. Just don't get caught, because there is a strict system of laws, and you'll rack up unimaginable fees and penalties if you're not careful with your criminal activity. People will respond to you; if you go about, ensuring their safety and gaining reputation, shop-owners will sell you their items for less, and important political figures will lend you favors. But don't walk around in your underwear, because everyone notices, and even you, as the player, will feel embarrassed for your character. This is only a glimpse at the sheer level of interactivity available to you.

Also the mod MGSO: Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul will immensely affect your game experience and it will bring the game a bit closer to modern standards.

A note however for those who like to play with Construction Kit, game will not come with it and you'll have to get it manually. I cannot provide links since I do not know the policy of Gamersgate on links in reviews, you should be able to search the web for a fix.

Jeez, what can be said about Morrowind? The sheer size and scope of this game is incredible. It's much bigger than Oblivion and Skyrim, although admittedly less dense.

The strength of the game is definitely the incredible amount of lore, but that might not be for everybody. You have to do a lot of reading to really get into this game!

The biggest downside has got to be the combat. You know how Skyrim's combat is "meh", and Oblivion's is pretty bad? Morrowind's is BRUTAL! The animations are choppy and awkward, and melee combat just feels clunky and repetitive. You'll have more fun playing a mage or an archer. The only cool thing about melee combat that I can think of is that there are spears, which were absent from the later TES games.

One thing I love though is that Morrowind's RPG mechanics are a lot more traditional. Enemies don't scale with your level like they did in Oblivion, and the way you level up with relation to your skill increases is a lot more intuitive and logical.

Despite the lackluster combat, Morrowind is easily my favourite in the Elder Scrolls series and I highly recommend that you check it out!

The best flawed game you will ever play

By deiliberi posted 6th October 2012

I consider a five star rating a mark of absolute perfection, given only to games that could not possibly be criticized on anything other than trivialities. Morrowind does not fit this model. It has serious flaws, the combat system is not particularly exciting, the character models are not all they could be, and it has a rough learning curve. That being said, it is my favorite game of all time. The reason for this is the perfect immersion it gives the player in a distinctly detailed, enormously complex, and very foreign world. Where most fantasy games drop you off in a classic, high fantasy setting, Morrowind lets you explore, and forces you to deal with, a place that is unlike anything that you have ever thought of or experienced. The people in this land have their own culture, eat their own food, and interact according to social rules that are all their own. Morrowind forces the player to adapt to a culture that is not their own and that they are not even vaguely familiar with. Where Oblivion might be seen as Tolkienesque with a shot of Rome, and Skyrim has a clearly Scandinavian flavor, Morrowind doesn’t really correspond with anything that the player might be familiar with. Beyond that, Morrowind is complex in a way that later installments in the Elderscrolls series are not, yet infinitely more playable than Daggerfall. Overall, this is the game that I have and will return to until the inevitable occurs.

Must buy!

The Elder Scrolls series is probably one of the most successful RPG series in video gaming, and TES 3: Morrowind was the first to make it to the consoles and open this wonderful world up to many non-PC gamers.

Morrowind puts you in control of a character of your own design, and then pushes you out into a vast world and leaves you to your own devices. Unlike most other RPGs where you follow a storybook path to heroics, Morrowind gives you the freedom to breathe life into your character and allow them to act as you see fit. Hero or villian? It is your story to write.
