Dungeon Defenders review

Really fun game to play. I tried it solo, but it wasn't as fun as in the multiplayer mode. I think its a really great game to play with friends or family but not a game that one playes alone.

Such a fun game, as long as you play with friends, really adorable and fun style. Lots of unlocks and progression, would of been a 5 but after the first play through I tried playing a different class but it was just too repetitive for me.

Dungeon Defenders is a nice Tower Defense game. You can play it online as well, though as the game goes equipment may start to become extremely important compared to the start of the game. Especially when playing online.

Also the fighting get more important as you get higher in the game since your towers will end up not being enough anymore alone.

All in all it's a really nice game with lot of DLC content to keep its replay value up there.

Dungeon Defender is a great deal of fun with a group of friends. It is a zany and cartoony hack n's slach/tower defense game of epic proportions, but the content is limited and does get old pretty quickly. I understand some new DLC has been released to add flavor, but it is probably not worth it to pay for replay value. Still, the game is solid, and probably worth the buy.

I was excited to see the phrase "Tower-Defence RPG", but was underwhelmed by the actual experience. I understand why so many other reviewers like this game, but for me, it came up short in a number of ways.

- Everything is slightly too slow. Your movement speed, the menus, the transitions between levels. I found I was spending as much time waiting as playing.

- After my first session, local games failed to save correctly. I understand this is fixed in a patch, but...

- I couldn't find a standalone patch to this game. It only seems to support patching through Steam. This was a problem for me, as I have very slow internet at home and usually download patches from somewhere else.

- I personally like to solo games, and I get the impression this game was designed for multiple players. Soloing was a real grind to get my character levels high enough.

This game is a definitive new genre of tower defense and rpg. It's very fun for all ages. There is often new content to buy as DLC: new classes, maps, challenges. You have so many maps to choose from and difficulty levels for each that you can play for countless hours easily.

It is easy to level up to 70. Each level after this takes much time to get. But there is much content to play at each level. You can equip many items and a pet, all of which you can upgrade.

Addictive game, very recommended.

Dungeon defenders is definitely worth every penny. it is an rpg tower defense game. This game was surprisingly challenging and i had to do some over the levels a few times. You can level up, select what abilities to level up, and upgrade your equipment.

Fun game. Hybrid hack and slash - Tower defense game. Tons of content available. The game does get a little repetitive after a few runs though. Recommend as a go to game when you are bored, especially if you have some friends to play with.

DD is a great game, while there is a lot one could complain about, there is just enough, if not more to be really happy about. The community stays on the developer and the developer for the most part listens. You won't be disappointed if it interests you at all. I recommend it highly.

Whether you like strategy, RPG, or tower defense games, Dungeon Defenders is a solid buy. The price is a reasonable $15, and there is a demo available if you want to give it a try. If you get frustrated with the single player campaign, try multiplayer; it’s much more fun!

Fun and great value

By lowyhong posted 16th January 2012

The replay value on this is great. The game offers a variety of maps to play on. Playing the campaign first, you will find that it's a typical tower defense game, except your characters have the ability to fight back. The campaign basically has you running around building towers, while stopping enemies from destroying your crystal. In fact, you can play it as a pure strategist (Tower-based character), a hack-n-slasher or even a first person shooter! There are a total of 10 skills that can be increased for the 4 playable characters (the DLC adds more). Some increase your tower abilities, while others increase your character's stats and special abilities. After every mission, you can choose to go back to the tavern and purchase items, respec your hero and even set up shop for other players to view and purchase your items.

At any point in time, you can choose to play the campaign maps on varying degrees of difficulty; in addition, there's Survival and Pure Strategy mode. Both provide better equipment than you'd normally find, although on the harder difficulties, they can take as long as 8-10 hours. When you're done with the Campaign, the game also unlocks the Challenge mode for each map. Don't mistake this for a generic tweak to the default game - the Challenge maps offer different varieties of game types. One has you playing as a bad guy (so you have to infiltrate their crystals); another involves fighting off wave after wave of monsters, with limited lives and time.

Even at its original price, the game is worth every dollar. Like Diablo, Din's Curse and other persistent-character games, you can play it forever, and even when you max out your level, you can continue to grind for better loot. For better or worse, this is up to the individual, but the point is, the game is large on content, which makes it an excellent purchase - more so if you can get it at a discount.

Great title to pickup for any fan of the action-rpg or tower defense genres. It combines them effectively without over exaggerating one or the other. Though sometimes the amount of loot you'll be selling can get daunting, it is no worse than the likes of Diablo or Torchlight. Good variety in the class system and playstyles make for a LOT of replayability.

I bought this game on release day and it was great then. It has only gotten better and better since then. They have been nonstop adding content and fixing bugs in this game since its release.

This game seemed to have a quite pre-release, but man did it explode once word of mouth started. For it's price, this hack and slash RPG has quite a bit of content and is a load of fun to play with friends!

The art is a little childish (tons of bright colors!), but the strategy is all adult. This is basically a tower defense game, where you can also shoot and kill the enemies. You have to master magic, defensive placements, and teamwork in order to succeed. An interesting concept, and a must-buy at the price.

First one important note on Steam. I bought this on Gamersgate to support this site even though I read this game should be played on Steam for online purposes. This game has a redeemable code for playing it on Steam so don't fear buying it on Gamersgate. HOWEVER, PLAYING IT ON STEAM WILL REQUIRE DOWNLOADING IT FROM STEAM. IF YOU BUY THIS GAME HERE TO PLAY ON STEAM, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT HERE FIRST, GO DIRECTLY TO STEAM.

That being said I gave this game a five star rating for a number of reasons. The equipment is extremely variable. Builds are variable and I haven't come close to testing all the classes yet.

But rather than list all the cool features, because they are pretty obvious, I'll give a picky critique of the things that detract from this game.

1) No appearance of an instruction manual. There are youtube videos that can show you some basics. I had to learn the hard way with this game, and I got kicked from games early on because I didn't follow etiquette because I didn't know the rules (i.e. I didn't know equipment left on the ground will be auto-sold and split among teammates so I would pick up all the items other players were ignoring, making me a looter)

2) Levels can be boosted really easily by higher level players. I joined the Halloween map on wave 9 out of 11 in order to unlock a costume from DLC. The defenses were already set up and it was kinda laggy so I basically sat back and didn't do anything. I joined at level 41 and ten minutes later left as level 51. I'm not sure what the max level is but I haven't seen a level 80 and 70+ is the zone for top players.

3) I've never been a big fan of the Unreal engine. Its hit detection is a bit funky in my opinion, as opposed to a real clean system in the Halo series. It also looks a bit cartoon-ish, but maybe I should be thankful because otherwise my computer probably couldn't run it (although this game is also on PS3 which I own...)

Dungeon Defenders review

By Flyingpanzyking posted 22nd December 2011

The game is fun and runs well on split screen. Some DLC is free and others aren't, and if you miss the free bits you have to pay to unlock them. Also if you want the DLC you have to activate this on Steam so keep that in mind. Each character is completely different from each other and there are different builds for each of them depending on what you want to focus on. I wouldn't call combat fluid but it works for the set up and most people won't have a problem with it. Tower placement has some strategy to it, obviously some spots are beter than others but if you aren't good at strategy you don't have to worry too much about it as the gameplay is fairly simple as far as tower defence goes and thanks to the way the game is played you can fill in any holes with yourself as you enage in the battles alongside your towers.

Spent over 200 hours on this game. Very enjoyable, with a great developer team backing it up. Great buy, you'll really enjoy it. Replay-ability is iffy after 200 hours, but that's quite awhile at any rate =)

Dungeon Defenders lives up to the hype!

By Eatshuffle posted 20th December 2011

As the title suggests this indie wonder game lives up to its hype and delivers a fun and addictive experience, the combat is defined and very strategic. Definitely worth almost anyones time.

By stormlifter posted 3rd December 2011

In the ever expansive void of good coop games comes Dungeon Defenders! Cheap and easy to setup, fun for 4. You can't go wrong with this game if you like killing things and getting loot. It's very well polished and the game just keeps getting better over time as they constantly patch and add HUGE things for free (new maps, new modes, new features). It's awesome. A great buy to support and enjoy a great game.

Dungeon Defenders review

By emerssso posted 22nd November 2011

Now that it's finally out, I can confidently say that Dungeon Defenders is worth purchasing. The gameplay is very solid, the theming is great, and the co-op mechanics are very well designed. I'm a big tower defense fan, and this game is a great addition to the genre, not only because it's integration of action-RPG mechanics is so well done, but because many of the towers are so new and different.

Might be worthy to play online

By gilius5000 posted 16th November 2011

This game was designed to be played online, in 4-player co-op. You can play alone by switching characters but as many reviews point out, the difficulty becomes very high and it's boring to switch over and over to build a decent mix of defenses. Now, if you buy this game here, know that as of 11/16 there is a bug that prevents players using non-Steam copies from joining games with players using Steam copies. EVEN if you're trying to play unranked matches. GamersGate has offered this on pre-order for over an year, then on the last moment the developers hook up with Steam offering exclusive items and favoring them for online play. A real letdown from Trendynet.

Dungeon Defenders review

By Campbelloid posted 13th November 2011

Dungeon Defenders has been out for quite some time with an orginal launch on Ipad / Ipod. This game is excellent and with very few flaws. The idea of the game is to defend the several floors of your castle from evil monsters using a mix of 3rd person action and strategic tower defence with an RPG element as well. You level up and access new weapons, armours and pets. With 4 unique classes to play and up to 4-player Co-op the game can get very tricky. The replay value is high due to an online ranking system and a gamers need to get all characters to level 70. A minor downside is the fact that you have to sue the steam key to access Trendy net but local online multiplayer works just as well. This is aimed more for multiplayer but singleplayer is just as good if your friends aren't online. With constant updates and bug fixes, and with DLC already out, PvP in alpha and easy access to modding, this game is a must buy.

Great hit

Dungeon Defenders review

By coconutzfr posted 4th November 2011

I waited 1 year for this game and It worth it. You have to defend a core against waves of monsters by placing defenses and fighting them. You can play solo or multi up to 4 players, the waves will adjust to the number and the level of players. There are a pack of maps (much more than sanctum) and devs keep working to improve the game. You can custom your hero as you want and the stuff you find in chest and monsters is randomly generated and can be improved by spending mana in it, so there is a lot of possibilities and I love it.

Such a good game! i've waited for this for ages and nowi've finally got it. This is a Stategy/action tower defense where you have the option to be 4 different heros. The squire, The mage The mon and finaly my personal favorite the huntress. the game has a singelplay aswell as a mutiplayer that allows up to 4 players playing together, the game scales the monsters spawning with how many players are in the game. aside from the standard towerdefense experiance you also get some cool, entertaining well thoughtout boss fights whichs adds a lot of color to the game. all hotkeys can be rebinded aside from 1, i think the developers here did an outstanding job and i absolutly loves this game! 5/5 dispite of all the waiting because it was worth it!

Dungeon Defenders review

By MaceyNeil posted 1st November 2011

This game is NOT DRM-Free it uses steam for full access of content (thus manageing your digital rights [equitable access regardless of retailer] and with micro patching on steam only the creation of insufficiency in implied service as well as the good old box of rocks style fraud where you are promised a product and get something completely different [Only steam users get access to official multiplay in this multiplay Tower Defense making it entirely necessary to have Valves special brand of DRM to fully utilize the advertised DRM-Free product you paid for]).

With that most important point out of the way and spelled out in a stark letigious manner (that should have you in exactly the right frame of mind) i present this as to my review of gameplay.

-It is fairly cheap, but not so graphically.

If you do a search through gamers gate for DRM free games you will find a spate costing well over $10 and the sheer amount of utter useless mundane trite will overwhelm you; with this in mind i feel dungeon defenders is at the correct price point for what it is.

-Dungeon Defenders as compared to 'Revenge Of The Titans' is more relaxed and casual in feel but not to the detriment of it's long term enjoyment. Though if you've played both you will appreciate the difference having software not kneecapped by shite DRM makes.

-The Gameplay is easy enough to learn though there is a serious need for tooltip roleover for character skills as until you start upgradeing items (instead of levelling a character) you may be stuck with no idea what your putting points towards and even after gaining this knowledge how heavily it will impact your effectiveness if at all.

On top of this to do with items there are two problems.

a) you get swamped with items and without a textbook knowledge of what each is doing for your dps [even with ballpark figure for per tower dps] you tend to just look to see if the items have a thumbs up or down (as in you don't really care how your equipped, you just get a pat on the back and a warm feeling that everything 'should' be okay to go by).

b) Item upgradeing will turn a crap item into a more uber one but you will find unupgraded items with more possibility (a higher end spec) that because you cannot see with the thumbs up system the end spec value of the item you will inevitably dump because it got a thumbs down [as compared to an end spec piece of shite].

-It's 4 player only and while one shouldn't necessarily be down on the company due to most people being able to read a review and hence know beforehand; the gameplay itself seems as if it could handle 6-8 maybe more and well if you have 5 or more friends you like to game with all the time you'll be either ending up casting one out or always playing something different which is a bit sad really for a relaxed social game.

-What else can i say except that it is a good game if you can palate the fact your being told by the companies involved that their farts don't smell. Oh and their patch rollouts from official statements on the matter seem to be along the lines of... that the innequity will continue; meaning with friends on steam who autoupdate periodically, for probably weeks at a time you will not be able to game with them (though it always has split screen, like if that matters in todays day and age [plus theres forum posts on controller issues with the game so *shrugs])

This is an extremely fun and cute tower defense game with an RPG feel. Multiplayer is where it's at. 4 players fighting hordes of monsters with their towers and individual skills. Random games with people on steam if you want registered, otherwise non-registered multiplayer is available too. The single player is fun & challenging. But, as I stated the multiplayer action is awesome. Class choices are the Mage, the pantless Knight, the Monk, & the Archer. You have a tavern between matches as well as a persistent storage. Good times to be had!

Dungeon Defenders review

By Deredex posted 28th October 2011

Dungeon Defenders could be described as a Mix of Tower Defense and (Online-)RPG.

The Online Element is totally optional, you can play Solo with local Save Games or online open Game. Both of those are moddable, according to the Developers.

The 4 different Classes are all quite enjoyable in their own way and compliment each other.

Then there is the Ranked play, via Trendynet. No Mods allowed to prevent cheating, so it's a competative mode.

There is no PvP as such, just Leaderboards.

I bought this game, after checking it on my PC 2 of my Brothers and my Sister also bought it.

So far I have 39 hours played and I intend to continue.

Was it worth the wait?

By jhalagaza posted 28th October 2011

To not even mention the fact that this was pre-ordered when it had a 'release' date of October *2010* - yes, that's right, this game has been delayed over a year from when I paid for it.

Was the wait worth it?

It seems like a decent game - reasonably entertaining TD & beat-em-up hybrid, but this is marred by the fact that even though I have a 'valid' client - I cannot connect to over 90% of the games online. Even though it is 'open multiplayer' on GameSpy, it does NOT work with clients installed through steam (which is apparently 90% of the games out there), giving some error about a steamworks component it cannot download. Granted, I did receive a steam redeem code to get the steam version - but I bought this through GG, not steam for a reason!

How can a game have a bit of a 'rushed' feel when it is already a year late? Dont ask me.

It has potential - that is why I bought it - but for this delay I would expect a game that has working multiplayer out of the box, and less 'rushed' feel to it. Time will tell what the next few patches bring.

Dungeon Defenders review

By grynnan posted 23rd October 2011

I bought this game a year ago. It has been a long wait. We have already seen it released on Android and iPhone.

Thought it was just another €10 timekiller, and it is.. I mean, time just flies by. The game is simple to learn, but hard to master. The best TOD game on PC (Don't even know if there are any other games like this on PC.)

The game is based on the UT3 engine, but it is build for speed, so you don't need the latest hardware to run it. (It runs on handhelds and phones. The game is graphically more advanced on the PC, but will not "kill your pc")

So graphic wise, it does what it should, and is not ugly. (It's cartoon-isch.)

Sound is good as well, not top nudge, but does it job.

The only down with this game, (might be patched, people on the game's forum asks for it), is that you don't see ping/latency on server list, so sometimes you end up on a high ping server and will suffer from the old "Bungee-jump lag glitch".

Dungeon Defenders review

By phrosen63 posted 21st October 2011

Story:

The story of Dungeon Defenders is simple, it takes place in a land called Etheria were great warriors gather to defend the realm from a great evil lead by the Old Ones. The champions manages to lock away the power of the Old Ones inside Eternia Crystals. The champions then leaves their offspring in charge of the common castle chores. While playing the young champions-in-making accidentally unleash the power of the Old Ones, and most face the great evil alone.

Gameplay:

Dungeon Defenders is a mixture of the immensely popular Tower Defense and Action RPG. The player can choose between four distinct hero classes; the Squire, the Huntress, the Pupil and the Monk. Each class has their own abilities, traps/towers and strengths as well as weaknesses. The object of the campaign levels is to defend your Eternia Crystal from the oncoming hordes of evil. There are also special challenges for the players to mix things up. The game can be played locally or online. The game can even be played using split screen.

Audio:

There's not a lot to say about the sound in this game, seeing how it's an Action RPG; the most common sounds will be your weapon hitting enemies and their grunts. There is not a lot of dialogue, so there's not much to say about the voice acting. It simply gets the job done. The music fits well with the game.

Video:

The graphics in this game is great. It has a lovely, colorful cartoon'ish feel. The game doesn't require a lot to run, but still looks very nice and runs smoothly. Dungeon Defenders graphics is obviously nowhere near top-notch games such as Crysis 2 or Battlefield 3, but it doesn't need to be. In fact it's cartoon'ish graphics improves the visual experience and makes it more enjoyable to play. Dungeon Defenders could not have been made better, using any other graphics engine.

My thoughts:

Ever since I first learned about Dungeon Defenders I was excited about it. I thought the idea to mix Tower Defense and Action RPG was brilliant! (I know there has been a lot of custom maps made for Warcraft 3 featuring heroes, but none of them has ever been this great.) Being able to play split screen with your friends is amazing. It's surprising that so few games has this feature these days, seeing how it's been around for at least 20 years.

Dungeon Defenders revolves around mana. Mana is used for nearly everything; casting spells, using abilities, summon towers/traps, even buying and upgrading items.

There is also experience points, obviously. Experience points are only awarded to the champion who gets the killing blow on the enemy; so there is no shared experience. The positive thing about this is that no one will stand around and leech exp from their team mates. The bad part is that it's every man for themselves; everyone is going to rush in and try to get as many kills as possible and not care if the general defense suffers from their selfishness. The best way to balance this is to play as a team of four friends.

One of the biggest problem with RPGs is the leveling up system, many doesn't feel rewarding. Dungeon Defenders simply gives the player a couple of attribute points to spend on upgrades such as Player Health or Tower Damage, so there's no Skill Tree like in Diablo. Still, leveling up is fun and it always leaves the player hungry for more once they have finished placing improving their character.

The downside:

New games these days.. Always rushed, never finished. Just like many other new games these days the retail version came with tons of bugs and flaws. A lot of players encountered a large variety of different problems. I wish more developers would be smart enough to let players beta test their games for them, and release demos of their games before the final product is released.

Verdict:

Despite the many bugs Dungeon Defenders has suffered the first few days after it's release I gotta judge it for what it has potential to become once it's fixed. I love Dungeon Defenders, it is very addictive and it is based on a great idea. The game has a lot of replay value seeing how it has four different classes, and if you are like me and want to level each hero to max level; you've got many hours of gameplay ahead of you.

I give Dungeon Defenders are strong five out of five stars. Brilliant game!

WORTH EVERY PENNY! Just wanted to get that out of the way, but seriously it is an amazing game that has so many different elements. I would recommend installing this game through steam once u have bought it on GamersGate just for the online friend invite. Having said that, it is an outstanding game to play with other people! You can get so much fun out of it just through the single player but the online mode, with strangers or your friends, adds a whole different dimension with the in-game talking system as well as loot share. It is 100% worth the money and I would recommend this to any person that likes Action/RPG/Shooter/Tower Defense games, truly a gem in the industry.

Startlingly good

I love tower defense games. Somehow they are engaging and relaxing at the same time. Fun puzzles to tackle, strategy games of a kind but without the frantic pace. So I have approached any game which melds TD with any other form of game with a bit of trepidation. So it was with this game which tries to meld Tower Defense with the co-op Action RPG genre.

Dungeon Defenders took that trepidation, laughed in it's face, and boldly kicked it over the cliff. It is a true tower defense game in that each wave is preceded with a build phase. You can plan and build at your leisure. After signaling completion the attack phase begins. The game shifts from tower defense goodness to action RPG awesomesauce.

Early on no level can be completed without defenses nor without engaging in hack-and-slash, knee-deep-in-orc-guts combat. Maintaining those defenses through each successively more massive wave becomes a challenge. When defenses fall things become insanely frantic. But in true TD fashion any failure of your defenses can be traced back to bad choices in placement or maintenance. IE, it can be managed and in so managing it the game achieves true tower defense status.

Action RPG staples are there as well. Gear looting/improvement, leveling up, character builds all help mold the experience. These factors help keep the game engaging when repeating levels.

The only criticism I have with the game is that the class balance is heavily skewed. The Squire is both a melee powerhouse as well as a near necessity as his defensive structures are almost a requirement as the foundation of any setup. The Apprentices offensive towers are second to none. The Monks auras can set up effective kill zones and provide timely buffs. The Huntress' traps, by comparison, are often a waste of defensive points better spent elsewhere while her ranged DPS hardly makes up for the lack of any decent structures. Playing a round with no squires or apprentices is brutal as no other classes can place structures of any kind.

Dungeon Defenders first impressions

This seems like rather a nice game. I pre-ordered it about a year ago and had expected to play it sooner. But the end result is quite nice.

The gameplay seems to work well, though the different classes really seem to be made to work together and not as standalone. It's a nice touch though that each class has a difficulty rating. The Apprentice having the classic towers that shoot, making it easier to keep track, while the Monk seems to be more based around auras and buffing/debuffing players, making a single player experience that much harder.

So far I've tried out the huntress and the wizard and must say both play rather well but require you to work in different ways which is a good thing.

If you like third person shooters mixed up with some tower defense, and levelling up a character, this is for you.

Please note though that to play on the ranked servers you need to activate the game on Steam.

Dungeon Defenders, from Trendy Entertainment and Reverb Publishing, is the latest in the tower defense genre. Don't expect innovation, but if you can make it through the poor menu design, there is a fun game to play with some buddies.

This new XBLA, PSN and Steam fantasy-themed tower defense game sticks fairly close to the tower defense formula. Action is separated into two phases: the build phase, which allows players to deploy any number of physical and magical towers and traps, and an action phase, which is an all-out war to prevent enemies from reaching the Eternia crystal (the thing you're defending).

There's a hefty learning curve to Dungeon Defenders. At first, the game's colorful art style and cute-looking characters will disarm you, making you believe you have everything you need to defeat its hordes of enemies. Then, it will slap you in the face and demand perfection. I don't think I got the hang of the game, its strategies or its gameplay systems until I played three or four hours. But once I figured it out, it was a fun to play...with friends.
