DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

By LesFleurs posted 21st April

Doom 3: BFG Edition is okay. I have always loved the doom games since I grew up with them, but revisiting Doom 3 makes me realized how far along shooters have come in the past few years. What was jaw-dropping then in terms of visuals now look quite dated, and ID have done little to improve the look of the game. The expansions are pretty pointless, more embarrassing than anything else. Resurrection of Evil, with its new weapons just screams, "Hey guys! We can be like Half-Life 2 and FEAR also!", which at the time was hopping on the bandwagon of shooter trends whereas now it's just old and outdated. While it was a more or less fun experience, I wish they had done more to improve the look of the game and the frustrating and tedious elements of the game have only gotten worse over time. People new to the series won't be won over but long-time fans will probably have a bit of fun enjoying an old favorite.

If you were a DOOM3 fan, BFG edition is for you!

Mechanics were slightly changed, so you don't have to walk with your flashlight all the time, graphics were rejuvenated, so the horror appeal of the game is much better.

The only minus is, that the new missions are pretty mediocre-ish.

Doom 3 was a great game for its time. Unfortunately it doesn't hold up to well and leaves me wanting more. The original is a tad more fun than this HD re-skin.

A good game indeed, with two more campaigns and the two first games. But you cant add mods to this version, which makes of this version a "Not so good", looks like it was made only for consoles because is worse than the original Doom 3.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

A re-release of DOOM 3.

Time has not been very kind to DOOM 3. While it was state of the art, it hasn't aged very well. Gameplay mostly consisting of scripted monsters jumping at you from closets doesn't help it much either. It is a competent FPS, yet lacks the real drive that would push the player to move forward.

Much more interesting is the story with DOOM and DOOM 2 that are also included in the BFG Edition. Despite being 20 years old (oh God, has it been THAT long already), they are still solid games. Technically, they are old, but don't feel as old as these probably should. Updated to run without issues in modern operating systems and computers, control scheme and gameplay are still from 1993-1994... which is actually very pleasant in case of both DOOMs.

I enjoyed both immensely and not only due to nostalgia. The genius of id's level design and gameplay shows through brightly in many levels while others feel mediocre today.

Doom 3 was released in 2004, and for being as old as it is, it has aged well. The game itself can be described as gameplay that is similar to Half-Life, with horror elements akin to Dead Space. While the graphics are quite outdated, the atmosphere that Doom 3 creates can easily immerse the player, so the graphical shortcomings can easily be overlooked. The controls are quite solid and simple anyone who has played a first person shooter should have no trouble with them. The main story almost feels like a movie at times and is well-written. Additionally, Doom 1 and 2 are included and are still a joy to play despite their age. I recommend this game for anyone who wants a break from all the copy and paste military shooters that have saturated the market, and wants to play a classic First Person Shooter.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

So I picked up DOOM 3 BFG edition for PC and for Xbox 360. The PC version is great, some new improvements to the game and updated graphics options (not quite 'sikkmod' style for vanilla doom 3, but has a few new ting to tinker with plus updated menu options and configurations). The Lost Mission is a great map pack, btw. The addition of 3D stereoscopic support and VR headset are a huge plus... I don't have the Virutal Reality headset as it isn't out just yet, but the 3D stereo output is probably the best 3D mode for any game I've seen... There are a few good games for 3D out there, but DOOM 3 BFG Edition's 3D mode tops them all. The only options I wish they add are a menu option for FOV (it can still be changed via ingame console or config file) and eventually Co-op (something the console version has, but they decided to not add to the PC BFG edition release). Course there's alway LMS coop mod... whenever they update it for the enhanced BFG edition, that is, but it would still be nice to see an official coop from id/bethesda for the PC version.

On a side note... I picked up the 360 version just to see the improvements over the original Xbox release. If you remember, Doom 3 was released on Xbox just right before the Xbox 360 came out... so it had to be heavily watered down for graphics and maps to meet performance requirements for the original Xbox. Sadly, while it still made for a great experience, visually and gameplay wise, it was lacking quite a bit in comparison to its PC counterpart.

That's most certainly not the case. Not only has the engine had some nice touches and updates and it's running purely on the PC engine for the Xbox 360 now... but it looks great!. The console version of DOOM 3 BFG Edition is definetely side by side with the BFG edition enhanced PC version now. Especially character models and textures, as well as level/wall textures. It looks every bit as a modern game as any current game out for the 360. And it feels just as fresh. It also supports 3D mode. Both versions include:

DOOM 3, and its huge expansion pack "Resurrection of Evil" along with a new expansion pack called "The Lost Missions". All of them support 3D and run on the enhanced id tech engine, multiplayer is available. 3D mode is supported. Features like a gun-attached flashlight, improved audio, lighting, some new graphics features and enhancements (not exactly sikkmod, but still nice touches and additions) for both versions (and much needed and improved config/graphics management for PC version), even updated FX (shotgun now sounds nastier, etc) and it includes DOOM 1 and DOOM 2 as vanilla as I've seen them other than owning the original PC copies.

Pick it up! you'll like it. May I say playing Doom 3 on my 56" LG Cinema display LED 3DTV is fricking AMAZINGLY TERRIFYING! And on my 30" HP ZR30w 2560x1600 pc monitor, it looks every bit as nice as it should, and holds up pretty well for a PC game. Definetely one nice 20th anniversary release to get anyone ready for Doom 4.

9/10 for a great bundle and new additions.. but the lack of co-op on PC and some other very minor changes kept it from a perfect 10/10 (Keep in mind, the PC version originally did not have Co-op either). Though if your picking up the PC version, beware that mods and modding are not going to work as of current, so if you need mod support, should stick to buying the original Doom 3 or Doom 1/2 for PC.. but for anyone but the mod enthusiasts, this release is a great deal.

Not a terrible game, but clearly designed for consoles and with little thought on optimizing the experience for PC gamers. Compared with the original DOOM 3 this sadly falls short. With mods, DOOM 3 can be made to look better than this, and is much more atmospheric.

60 fps yes, real-time shadows like pc in 2004...NO

By jakoben91 posted 2nd January

I was walking around in the game shining the flashlight on objects and no shadows would appear around or behind those objects like behind people, boxes or anything of that nature but when watching a PC video of the original game it did all of these things. The texture resolution seems lower than the PC version too. If I'm not mistaken hi end PC specs at that time were about what the ps3 has or maybe a little bit less. This is just plain disappointing. Even the vending machines still have blobs for textures like on original Xbox instead of looking like bags of chips, candy, etc. I wonder if the 360 version got the shaft too.

A classic in HD!

Wow! Maybe the graphics arent so good (its an old game) but its so SCARY!!!

Its awesome the way Doom 3 achieve to make you feel nervous about what is going on behind you.

Classics never die, and this game includes DOOM 1 and DOOM 2... Must buy!!!

This is an enjoyable albeit very linier game. If you compare it to the previous Doom's then it is very different but in it's own right it is worth a try.

Doom 3 was a nice game when it came out, even though it wasn't a good for me as other ID gems like Doom, Doom 2, Quake or Quake 2. But it was quite good nevertheless for its time. Now it has taken some plastic surgery and some add-ons that makes it a must have. If you are in doubt just think that BFG incluse both DOOM and DOOM 2... and wow, how great and fun they are, they don't do games like that anymore.

Doom 3 is nice game with awesome graphics. It is scary game. Mostly because of awesome game of lights and shadows. BFG edition on other hand brings only few enhancements and not all are good.

The Doom trilogy that this package consists of has the original 2 Dooms that came for PC and Doom 3 that out on the original Xbox, and the doom 3 resurrection of evil, and a brand new story called the lost missions. After suffering through year after year after of call of duty this, and call of duty that, the legendary shooter that popularized the first-person shooter has come back to take its place back on the market.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

Most veteran gamers will surely receive this remake of doom 3 with open arms. Its a title that still retains the charm of the original but time has taken its toll on its playable and technologic sides.Doom and Doom2 extras are a luxury to players, and its a GREAT way to enjoy a "pure" shooter.

Before release, the developers had stated in interviews that they'd made too many changes for existing mods to work with the BFG Edition, and its a shame, because there are works of the community that are true wonders.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

By elbersame posted 22nd December 2012

This collection of all three entries of the hugely influential first-person shooter series Doom inverts the usual rule for vogueish remasters – that the older the game, the less fun it is to play in an age of HD blockbusters. Instead, here, it's the relatively recent Doom 3 that struggles, while 1993's original Doom, the precursor to Halo, Call of Duty and the rest, still shines.

The problem is, perhaps, one of ambition. Released for the Xbox in 2005, Doom 3 is just one generation old and it tries, imperfectly, to achieve heights now taken for granted – near-realistic visuals, action woven into a compelling narrative, extra layers of story scattered through the world in PDAs and audio logs. In striving for more, it appeals less. Enemies move stiffly, even comically, as they weave down space station corridors and roll, robot-like, into cover. Everyone – hellspawn and space marine alike – appears lifelessly pale and glazed, like an undead doughnut.

Doom and Doom II, however, are still enormously fun. They're simpler, smoother, faster and accomplished – innovative and genre-defining in the face of technological limitations, rather than defined and impoverished by them.

Very great make-up for one one of the best games of all time. The only weakness i see is that now the light is spotted in your chest and it's allways lit. It takes away the axiety of chaning your light for a weapon whenever you see an enemy and being all dark.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

Cynical cash in that is actually worse than the many fan made enhancements for this game due to many technical issues. Still worth a playthrough if you've never played Doom 3 before, but if you own the original, you're better off getting a free mod.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

By PandaL posted 22nd December 2012

It's a package with good value. A package with Doom I to III will be the best thing for newcomers. However, since it lacks the original Doom III, veterans of this series will be dissappointed for several reason:

1, The remake alter the gameplay of Doom III, but not everybody believes it really enhanced the gameplay.

2, The new version does not support mod for original Doom III.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition review

By Sephirothmc posted 3rd December 2012

Why only 3 stars? Not for the game itself, doom 3 is one of the best fps ever made, the big problem is the poor quality of this re-edition that for the price is really not worth.

The graphic enhancement is almost none from the original (in some cases is even worse if compared with the original with HD texture pack mod)there is only a couple of level more and Doom 1&2 included in the pack really don't add any value to the game, in addition there is not mod support!

If you never played this game then you can buy it but just if in sale price, otherwise I advice you don't.
