Darkest of Days (Europe Version)

Rating: 3.8 (17 votes cast)

Have you ever wondered what could happen if time travel was a reality? Have you ever thought about the possibility of going back in time to rewrite history for the better? That possibility is a reality in Darkest of Days, where players will travel back and forth through the annals of time to relive some of mankind's most dire hours.

By fighting through terrible events such as The Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest conflict of the Civil War, and both World War I and II, the player will attempt to save certain key individuals who were never meant to become involved in these truly monstrous events and thereby change human history for the better.

Key features

  • Brand New Engine: The dedicated team at 8monkey Labs has created an all-new, groundbreaking game engine known as Marmoset. The Marmoset engine not only breaks from the all-too present Unreal engine FPS clones flooding the market, but also allows for some amazing graphical capabilities. You'll fight through epic battles filled with literally hundreds of NPCs on the screen at the same time, all with an advanced AI and all without a hint of graphical slowdown and all set against wide-open environments that are lushly detailed and dynamically lighted.
  • Compelling Storyline: Darkest of Days is a compelling, action-packed first-person shooter to be sure, but it's not just mindless run-and-gun, blow 'em up gameplay. You'll have to not only think about how to approach certain key battles and situations, but you'll also have to take care when fighting — certain key people that were never meant to die will be marked with a special blue aura. If you kill them, you'll face dire consequences…
  • Wreak Havoc with Future Weapons in Antiquity: Something nearly every gamer that's ever played a shooter based in the past has always wanted is the ability to bring a futuristic weapon back through history and kick some major butt. How differently would Custer's last stand have turned out if the General was equipped with an M-16 assault rifle? You'll be able to answer questions like this in Darkest of Days. While not every battle and situation will allow you to wield weapons from the future, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to unleash futuristic fury on your unsuspecting foes.

Darkest of Days (Europe Version) review

FPS where you play as an soldier who's supposed to be dead(or MIA) in Custer's Last Stand but rescued by a Time Travellers.

Story is interesting, filled with twists and stuffs, but ending is honestly not really good.

Gameplay is modern-style FPS driven with objectives in missions.

You carry two guns(sometimes you'll use mission-exclusive weapons such as Sniper Rifle), grenades and Chaser.

Weapons are from 19c(Revolvers and Muskets), WW1(Russian and German), WW2(late Germans but very few) and Futuristic Guns(What if a general had an auto-aiming assault rifle in American Civil War...).

Weapon skills(not guns themselves!) can be upgraded at briefing room, and Upgrade points are given on your performance. Killing certain people will decrease points you'll recieve.

You may want to shoot their legs or use Chaser(throw at them, then detonate to stun "historically important people") to disable them instead of killing them.

Graphic is good, no slow-downs with LOTS of NPCs in combat.

There's no multiplayer. Singleplayer has no replay value either.

good singleplayer FPS for first playthrough, but $34 price tag is pretty high. bought it on $8 and I feel it'd worth $15 or so.

I had my eye on this game for a long time, being a lover of history it intrigued me as a storyline.

At first I thought, how silly, advanced weapons in the American Civil war? pfffftt.

Then I bought it in a sale and realised, It is actually an interesting game! fairly well made aswell! As for the story all i'll say its similar to 'Timecop' the film, I don't consider this a spoiler as it is very much it's own story rather than a rip off. Just as a reference point, think Timecop.

The graphics are brilliant and the death/wound animations are some of the best i've seen (granted I dont play many FPS games).

I see some historical inaccuracies and mistakes, but these are minor and not relating to the quality of the production.

The gameplay is simple, it's no complex FPS game, but you can upgrade your rifle and/or pistol weapons which gives you some customisation.

The mechanics of weapons and ballistics is solid, with a nice reload mechanism where you have to press the mouse at the right time to avoid a jam/slowdown of reloading, this really adds to the frantic battle fighting.

There is also alot of interaction with soldiers, often they follow you and assist and most of the time you are working with them to achieve an objective. Especially the Antietam missions are superb! lines of Union and Confederate soldiers firing in the Wheatfield and charging, it is done very well!

All in all, this is a high quality 'niche' production. If you like history, you WILL like this game. I'm not a fan of FPS games, but this one is worth the time.

To summerise:

Gameplay I give 7/10 (There is customisation but not much)

Graphics I give 9/10 (Can't fault it really)

Story 8/10 (It's brief and intermittant but it fits with the gameplay very well)
