Disciples 2 Dark Prophecy review

Disciples 2 Dark Prophecy is a very deep, complex game that requires a player who is willing to spend time getting to know it.

Unfortunately, I am not that player. There are much better games in the genre, that show it off to better and more attractive effect.

Great Game!

I admit I am an old Disciples fan. Second part is simply the best in terms of gameplay - long, long hours I spent on campaigns, missions and even custom ones can easily stand for that. Dark Prophecy was the entry point for the whole series for me, and I can safely recommend it for everyone. It has four campaigns, for each race, which are a step easier than in Gallean's Return, so you can play it a lot. A must have for all RPG/strategy fans out there!

Like the first Disciples, this game has an awesome blend of HoMM overland map, turn based strategy with Ogre Battle type battles. Positioning, army loadout, and magic are all key to being victorious (rather than just building 10 million of whatever best unit you can make). Very in-depth, although this game is not for someone looking for casual fun. The scenarios are long and drawn out, but well worth the reward when you finally manage to knock off the scenario boss. This might be one of the few games that makes me really care about my heroes AND regular army units. Losing a high level unit while winning a battle can be costly indeed.

Disciples 2: Dark Prophecy is a turn based strategy involving humanity, elves, demons and the undead. A bit similar to the Heroes of Might and Magic combat system, with an over world like Lords of Magic. There is a campaign but the real treat is playing skirmish matches and developing your armies and cities to eliminate the competition.

Brilliant art theme that goes with the dark fantasy setting. This game offers a unique experience in a rpg/turn base strategy/resource management genre that is rare to find in games. If you like fantasy theme games with a unique style of gameplay, this is a must get. Make sure to get all its expansion to get the full experience as each expansion adds content to make the game more enjoyable and addicting than it already is

The Disciples series is one of my favorite of all times. Together with Heroes of Might and magic and, more recently, Knight Bounty, they represent the kind of games they I enjoy the most: strategy, turn-based (I don’t even qualify 'strategy' the real-time click-fest that are raging now). Disciples 2, and its many expansions, will just humble you. It is innovative, it is challenging, and it will punish you if you don't build your strategy from the beginning. What not to love? This is a classic, highly recommended.

It takes a very special kind of Strategy game to keep me interested for the long haul... & thank god that this is exactly what this game is. The game is sort of a turned based RPG with strong strategy element. The battles are simple (they mainly involve just clicking on the enemy you want to attack with the character whose turn it currently is... but you have got to be really careful. Every single character you loose in battle makes the current stage that much harder (hence the strategy element). Overall I give it 4 stars. A solid game

Really good game. A fun experience and a great playthrough. Great strategy aspect and a good challenge. Better than a lot of other games in its genre.

Disciples 2 may not be the newest game there is. Nevertheless, it offers a unique blend of Heroes of Might & Magic and cRPGs. The combat is far less about manoeuvering around a battlefield but instead about precision in picking your targets and army loadout. Now, the cRPG part comes: all your units, not just the hero, level up. You have to choose a path you go with your minions and then work hard to level them up for a final showdown and victory. The starting towns - capitals - are also a tough nut to crack. The game thus becomes more of an interactive adventure than a straightforward hit-in-the-face strategy. Each scenario has its own set of goals and boy, there's one hell of a variety in those. The game also features magic available to each ruler. You could say this sounds a bit generic for a fantasy strategy.

Do not make this mistake. Strategy is important as you need to control the resources to fuel your magics and heal your troops. Nevertheless the fact you control small parties instead of large warbands should tell you of the focus. The game is truly an epic, not on an epic scale but in terms of a tale of heroes.

The graphics are mostly classic two dimensions with some 3D elements. Remember that 2D graphics tends to age much better than 3D under any circumstances and the game holds a wonderful image after all these years.

Storywise - I admit, I have not finished it yet! - the game is what I stated earlier. The story is epic and Earth-shaking; it's one hell of a dark fantasy plot going on there.

The game also plays excellent in multiplayer; it's a great thing to play with your buddies for a change over Heroes; travelling parties instead of armies are a nice and fresh touch. I could probably name some frustrations but I simply... don't remember anything specific. Perhaps we could complain about balance (namely how the Undead Hordes have units immune to standard blades) but that really rings a bit hollow sometimes, seeing as the game is too much fun to just pass it up if you like turn-based strategy, dark fantasy and role-playing games.

Disciples 2 plays very much like Heroes of Might and Magic... if the Heroes of Might and Magic series hadn't sold out and gone casual. This game requires careful thought and planning, a great deal of strategy and most of all a large investment of time. However the payoff is well worth it.

Not quite what I was expecting, but very enjoyable none the less. I had read some comparisons between this title and the Heroes of Might and Magic/King's Bounty titles. While it lacks aspects such as positioning the units, it remains engaging and interesting even without that element.

In any case, poisoning enemy parties has not gotten old for me at all yet.

What can I say, this Game makes about everything right. For one, I only like high Fantasy and Lord of the Rings is my base line others have to cross. And only very few others, games, books and movies have crossed that line so far because they just stuffing clichés without any inspiration. But Disciples 2 stands firm with how brilliantly and coherently it presents it´s setting and it‘s engaging story. Then, I usually don‘t like Turn Based Strategy. Most turn based RPGs are bad enough. Again Disciples 2 stands firm. Because it doesn‘t bother me with tons of micro management boredom but focusses on the fun parts of exploring, battling, building castles and commanding armies within the genre.

From my usual gaming profile (FPS, Shooters & Action RPG) I should only agree with this game on the length of the gameplay, because I don‘t like short games. But, as it is: I love this game.

Disciple 2 is the monument of proof that ANY genre can be interesting if it‘s done right. The minor graphical shortcoming and crowded maps are completely forgivable, compared to the well balanced but demanding fights. Along with the overall excellent accessibility of the gameplay. If you are like me and fancy widening your gaming horizon, here is good game to start.

Very good strategy game with nice climat! For me it's better than HoMM series, because:

- you have more unit's upgrades than in heroes

- economy is much less important than tactic

- because you can't move units in battle, you have to better repare your army to defeat enemies

- it's much more exciting to get enemy castle :)
