Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.

Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilizing found items as weapons for self-defense and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

In addition to satisfying even the most bloodthirsty action fan’s fantasy, Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all the while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the intense combat and immersive story with cooperative gameplay.

With the all-new Chrome Engine 5 powering Dead Island, the game will use the latest installment of Techland’s acclaimed proprietary game engine, allowing the player to experience the tropical island paradise in graphical splendor with diverse environments like lush forests and detailed city environments.

Awesome game...... best LAN party game ever

By Divoomx posted 22nd March

Simply awesome and everyone enjoys it . Easy to play and for the price you aren't going to get a better game + Co-op it is simply awesome

Fun, Co-operative, and Pleasing

If you're a fan of Left 4 Dead and Borderlands, this will be one of your favorite games!

With progression, melee combat (although there are firearms), and zombies, you'll find yourself returning to this game until you finish the campaign. Although beyond that, you will return to play the entire campaign again with 3 other friends!

Freaky, gory, scary, wrapped up in awesomeness

I'm not a big fan of zombie games but for some strange reason I bought Dead Island...I then proceeded to play the aforementioned game for approximately ten minutes and decided it was far too scary and I would never play it again...

but I did... :O

...and I learned to overcome my fear with the aid of a shotgun and an armoured car.

This game is really worth the money, even if you aren't a huge fan of zombie games. The great story, interesting side quests, immersive atmosphere and setting really draw you in. There is plenty to explore and after you have done that you can mod this game to enhance your experience.

Depends on what you're expecting

If you're going into this expecting a Resident Evil game, prepare to be disappointed. Dead Island is more in line with an Elder Scrolls game, but with deeper melee combat - be warned though, in order to even use the "advaced" melee controls, you have to use a 360 controller or similar! Yeah, it's kind of janky, but it's way cooler and allows for more tactics!

Dead Island review

Dead Island is a rare game these days: a zombie melee-em-up. Yes, there are firearms, but they are very rare and won't affect the majority of your zombie-killing. What you will find are various levels of crowbars, golf clubs and baseball bats.

Zombie games unlive or die by their combat, and Dead Island's thwackthwackthwack is resoundingly satisfying. The beautiful setting and unusual mechanics make this a wonderful experience. Everything is meaty and weighty, and there is a perpetual sense of despair, magnified by the fact that there is only one of you... or two of you.

And it's in the co-op that this game really shines. While not too similar to L4D in most ways, this is definitely an experience that is better to share.

There are some niggles - the "levels" on the weapons seem unnecessary, almost as if they're there to tick off an item on an RPG checklist. The zombie-smashing does get tiresome after ten+ hours.

But at the price, you can't go wrong for a bit of brutal zombie thwackthwackthwack. (Well, unless you buy the awful DLC, that is!)

Very fun game, lots of perks, weaponry, and story/side quests.

It does have a few bugs, but the gameplay alone is worth dealing with the bugs. I totally dig the mechanics of the attacks; aim for head, swing at head; but it can get repetitive at times.

Overall though, for the price I totally recommend it, whether it's on sale or not, the game has great length, and replay value. Different weapons and stuff will be available due to character selection (well that's what I have noticed so far), and playing with friends is always fun.

Best with friends.

Pretty fun zombie mash-up. The focus on melee weapons was interesting and this game is an excellent one to play with friends and it increases the fun of the experience and makes some of the harder parts more exciting!

By spencec1 posted 15th June 2012

Great graphics, sound adds to the effects, however level of play as the game progresses is terrible. Spots where the zombies continue to rush you, overwhelm you, and kill you. Becomes increasingly frustrating, and the quests become irritating at best. Good buy if you are looking for a discounted frustration, but don't be a sucker and buy this full price. Not sure I can even bring myself to finish this game.

There can never be enough zombies.

By Methos posted 27th November 2011

Most other people have reviewed this to death so let me just say that this is a great game which is very immersive and not shy on the gore.

This works perfectly with steam and I was able to activate it about 8 minutes after purchasing. Very happy with this purchase :)

Dead Island - [Censored]!!!!

By greydmiyu posted 29th October 2011

I haven't been engrossed in a single-player game like this in ages. It isn't the first game to do zombie survival justice, Left 4 Dead gets that nod even though its zombies are more 28 Days Later than Dawn of the Dead. What Dead Island really has going for it is the visceral melee combat. It's the first FPS game where melee combat just works. A single zombie is simple to dispatch. Kick them to the ground and hack away. Most times you'll lop something off in the process. A pack of zombies, however, can quickly overwhelm even the seasoned zombie fighter. The main story line is great. Some of the side missions are a tad wonky but they do help fill out the experience. However, the best indicator I can give for how good this game is would be the following: I have not cussed at a game so often and with such color in ages.

Awsome run around mashing zombies! I really enjoy the whole leveling up to unlock more weapons, and being able to choose what style zombie killer you want to be! also pretty cool being able to collect stuff and construct your own weapons

Left 4 Borderlands

By nlp138 posted 17th October 2011

This isn't quite the game I was expecting but that's not to say it's a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. While originally I was anticipating a more simulationist-style zombie survival game what I got was still a helluva lotta fun to play.

I haven't played all the way through the game yet and I've only played for about 5 hours on multiplayer (many many more hours on single player). That being said, I still feel like I have a pretty good grasp on the game and the experience that the designers were trying to give us. It's a brilliantly, gory, splatterific first person zombie survival/shooter game. I use the word 'shooter' loosely in that it takes the First Person perspective which is really familiar with shooter fans. There's not a lot of shooting in the early levels - a lot of up close and personal melee madness with rotting beach goers.

There are some RP elements as well - quests, quest hubs, loot progression and character advancement through an experience point system. All of these things give a strong feeling of progression and a give the player a measure of achievement and accomplishment. In short, it reminded me a lot of the Borderlands system of progression and advancement. This is a good thing - I loved that game.

The game isn't perfect but it is a lot of fun and for that it gets 4 stars!

Brilliant

By Atrox posted 8th October 2011

I have never really been a fan of shooters and games that involve zombies, but the open-world environment and the sheer atmosphere within the game is brilliant. It was hugely anticipated for a good reason! I definitely recommend trying this game if you love a challenge!

Dead Island review - Lots of fun

By Omniouseye posted 5th October 2011

Great game, got me hooked so much I managed to finish in 3 or 4 days. Lots of gore and dismemberment and blood gushing at you with really nice scenery. Makes you wish you were there, aside from zombies. The only thing that is missing is poor animation overall on the npc and acting, a lack of storyline that pulls you in like dead space and character developpement. But I knew what I was getting into when i got it. Anyone who looks for some bashing zombies up close and personal, this is the game for you!

Dead Island review

By Drackthar posted 19th September 2011

I've played a view hours of this game and I think it's really amazing. I have some issues with it however. Mostly it's the way the player characters move. It's not the graphics, those are amazing. However, the animation quality is pretty much crap... Once you get over that though the game is great. I love just roaming around and killing zombies. You can just run through the main quests but I feel like that's not really the point of the game and it shows. Just doing the main story will get rather boring rather quickly. It's still great to just roam around the big open areas and find all the side quests and fancy loot, etc.

This is *THE* zombie-killing game to get. It's what Dead Rising should've been years ago, it's fun, brutal.. and smooth.

Performance/Graphics:

This game runs like a dream on a mid-range system, i5 750 + GTX 460 and it runs 60fps MAXED out @ 1920x1200, almost never hiccups (except in areas with thick particle steam). And not only does it run well, it looks nice too. It's a little like Just Cause 2 in terms of "bloominess," but it's fitting and overall the game looks beautiful.

Gameplay:

Lots of weapons, the character classes add replay value. Combat is smooth & the way you move feels real. Lots of quests, side-quests, large freeroam world.. what more should I say?

Overall, this game is one of the most solid zombie titles I've seen, I'd be inclined to call it a better game than Left 4 Dead 1/2 but that's probably just because I've played them so many times. The game had some launch problems on steam (corrupt saves if you played right away then updated), but I think that's all been hammered out now for smooth sailing.

Initial thoughts on Dead Island.

By Forker posted 10th September 2011

Craft, collect, level, upgrade, clear houses of random junk, spec your character, quest. These are one of the few things you do in Dead Island except for killing zombies. Does this sound like a shooter or Left 4 dead to you? Well, it does not to me. There are not many similarities between these two games at all. The world is huge and there is a lot to explore, lots of side quests and it's a lot of fun in co-op which is how it's meant to be enjoyed.

Buy this game, it's not a perfect game and does have a handful of flaws will probably annoy you but these things are so easily overlooked when you play, after a few hours you don't even care about the flaws anymore. Very good game, well worth your money.
