Dreamfall: The Longest Journey review

By SlainKnightly posted 22nd Aug 2010

Dreamfall is a unique adventure game. Like most adventure games Dreamfall consists of traveling around talking with characters and solving puzzles. The puzzles are all pretty straightforward and for the most part are not very difficult. That said, unlike many adventure games, it is possible to lose the game.

This is because Dreamfall includes combat and stealth elements and it is possible to be caught and for the character to be killed, requiring a reload. Unfortunately stealth and combat feel highly awkward with the game’s controls making these situations more difficult than necessary. To make matters worse the game also includes some mini-games such as lock picking and hacking. The hacking mini-game is timed and in one situation it was necessary for me to repeatedly retry hacking a device 7 times before succeeding in spite of knowing what I was supposed to do. Needless to say that was very frustrating.

Essentially Dreamfall is an excellent story wrapped in a flawed game. The actual story of the game is

excellent and highly compelling. It features the exploits of three characters which the player will control and how their actions affect each other. unfortunately cumbersome controls and poorly implemented game play features detract from the quality of the game play. If story is most important part of an adventure game for you then you should really enjoy Dreamfall. However if you are easily frustrated by poor controls you might want to look at another game. The game might also be confusing if you have not yet played the original The Longest Journey game.
