GAME SUMMARY

DeadEnd Cerebral Vortex

Rating: 3.5 (6 votes cast)
DeadEnd: Cerebral Vortex is a first-person surreal labyrinth game.

The game threatens to break gaming conventions by throwing
a player into a surreal world of subconscious, where reality mingles
with illusion, and symbolism replaces traditional storytelling.

As a player, you must recover you shattered soul, piece by piece, by wondering
around game's 20 levels, while the environment changes from claustrophobic to moody to sublime.
Whilst roaming around, you see illusions that disappear when approached,
while at the same time real obstacles appear to block your path.
Things get even more interesting when you turn the world upside-down
so that illusions become reality, and reality turns into illusion.

Key Features:
  • 20 Levels set in 5 surreal worlds of subconsciousness.
  • Unique and artistic concept of alternating realities.
  • Elegant, streamlined interface.
  • Multi-language (English, French, Italian, German, Polish, Russian, Lithuanian),

DeadEnd Cerebral Vortex review

Basically it's just a maze game. You walk around the stage collecting your "soul fragments" and searching for an exit. There is an interesting mechanic of illusions. Sometimes walls that are visible from afar turn out to be fake and when you move in closer they just fade away. Or the other way around a seemingly straight path turns to a DeadEnd. The idea is good but it simply destroys any atempts to plan a course. Another thing that bugged me is that the game is in full 3d yet you don't have a standart first person movement mechanic. You simply click your mouse to advance one block further, which breaks the immersion a bit. The illusions mechanic is a brilliant idea, but the game simply feels incomplete.

What is it? No realy... I started the game and this question just poped up in my mind. It looks like puzzle, but it's too puzzled. I mean there's lots of randomnes around, so you there's no real sense of puzzle solving, especialy in later levels. I mean it might have been an idea to make a puzzle game, but something's missing here, either the levels are just too big. It's not a psychedelic adventure either, it could have been with time or step limits added. Yeah... add an ability to loose in this game and it will definately break your mind. So what is it? After an hour or so I finaly understood. It's simulator, or should I say — an ultimate test, challenging ones will. You just stroll around making progress, but achieving nothing, since every following challenge is even more random thant previous one. Then you realise that pure purpose of this game is giving up. Quiting it for some time feels good, then you come back, try again and proudly admit, that this time you actualy spent 15 minutes longer than previously. Strange stuff... and atractive in a weird way.
