Dead Space review

Dead Space is an incredible game, great storyline and probably the best fiver I spent on a game which is about three years old. As good as that first feeling you got when playing the first Resident Evil, though that's a poor comparison. Dead Space sucks you into it's madness and chaos, leaving you gasping for a breather. Definitely going to grab Dead Space 2

I bought this game kind of late, which I regret because it is phenomenal. First I should note that it ran relatively well on my laptop, even though my laptop is dated quite a bit. That was certainly a plus for me. I was impressed by the gameplay mechanics, specifically the realistic physics engine that really seems to make the game unique. For example, you can walk, run, but also you can jump from surface to surface when you're in zero-gravity states. That really makes combat interesting. I did not like that it wasn't from a first person perspective, but I can see what they were going for with the whole atmosphere of the game and having all equipment and inventory accessible in real-time rather than having to pause the game to access the inventory to use a med pack or something. I commend the developers for making such a polished game. I was also fairly satisfied with the plot, though I feel like I've seen a similar plot in another game (maybe I'm thinking of FEAR or something, not sure). Also, The fact that the gameplay calls for you to shoot at the limbs rather than the body or head for efficient killing is a very interesting concept, but since it wasn't in a first person perspective, I often found it hard to be that accurate when being startled or when the enemy is very close.

As for the genre aspect, this game certainly did frighten me a bit, almost as much as FEAR. After playing for a couple hours though, you might be able to predict when the next scare will come along, but only a few times out of dozens upon dozens. There are definitely some freaky creatures in this game, like a disgusting pregnant zombie body stuck to a wall, spitting out baby zombie monsters from its belly with tentacles that shoot at you. Can't say I'd want to meet the person who imagined that one...

This game is definitely a game worth playing and I recommend it to anyone who likes a game with a comprehensive experience that isn't shallow in any of its aspects.

Good horror survival game with great eerie atmosphere. Can get repetetive at times and could use a little bit more monster variations. This game reminds me a lot of the thing movies.

Still one of the best DEATH SCENES in a game. If you want to freak yourself out - then get this game. Play this in the dark with headphones and you'll see what I mean. Awesome immersion and really creepy. This is sci-fi horror at its finest. Its not a mindless clickfest shoot 'em up either - theres really a lot of thought needed to getting the best gun for you, depending on your playing style. Gameplay is very satisfying and killing the xenos will never tire you.

As a shooter, Dead Space is entertaining enough. Very linear, of course, but beautiful and engaging. On my Alienware M15x I was able to play with everything on high and only experienced framerate issues with the flamethrower.

As a horror game, it's not quite up to my standards. It's not scary. Dead Space a great action shooter with a handful of jump scares, nothing more.

Play this 3rd person survival horror shooter with the lights off and your headphones on. If you enjoy games like System Shock and movies like Event Horizon this is the game for you! Works great with a controller as well.

Two words can describe Dead Space: Scary and Interesting.

For the scary part I blame the excelent sounds the game employs. You never know, when behind the corner you hear a metal canister being tossed arround, if it is just a sound or if there is a monster lurking around over there. You are a bit tense as you slowly walk to the corner and look.

Why is the game interesting? Well the story for one, but I won't spoil that one for you. Then the design of the ship. I mean you even have zero gravity rooms and rooms exposed to outer space that bring some refreshment to the usual surroundings. Also part of the cool stuff are the holographic projections of HUD and other game displays. And finally the audio logs. I remember DOOM 3 had these and I relentlesly looked about the levels to listen to them. So if you are the one to scour the levels in search of small bits of information about the game story you are in luck.

Now all in all this is a very good game. An A+++ title.

To better understand the story of the game I would tell you to consider watching Dead Space Downfall. It tells the story of the final hours of the USG Ishimura (the ship you will be playing on).

Dead Space is a fun game if you go in with the right expectations. Definitely, don't go in expecting a true horror game, if you want that try Amnesia, as the developers seem to prefer surprises instead. The controls and viewpoints can seem a little wonky at times but work okay for the most part and the actual game mechanics also worked well. My favorite part of the game was the use of the soundtrack, which I thought was really good. Also, voice acting and dialogue were also much better than most games.

This game grows on you. All I can say to people is give it a chance. This game starts out very slowly and I was not impressed at all. But I stuck with it, and after about 2 hours I enjoyed myself. While this game is nothing innovative, it blends together a lot of things other games bring to the table (Level up system, Upgrade System, "Psychic Powers") and creates a pretty solid gaming experience.

One thing I will tell people is that this game is not as frightening (In my opinion) as it tries to make itself out to be. Anybody purchasing it for that reason may find that the game falls a little short.

This is a visually pleasing mix of action/horror...Story is by no means original; but still achieves the ability to entertain much as a movie sequel might.

Control system as delivered is god-awefull ; but. a little searching on the internet will provide the necessary tools to adapt the controls to your favorite keyboard configuration.

I would have been pleased had they stuck to the original gameplay and visual appearance of the game console counterparts...but, this representation does have merit of it's own with the 3rd person perspective...wait for it to go to $10.00 or less

Ahh... Dead Space! Mixed impressions on this one...

To begin with: graphics are great! Optimization is superb! Sound effects are spine shivering and voice acting is surprisingly believable...

That said, the game has somehow utterly failed in scaring me... it's just a bunch of cheap hollywoodesque "jump off your seat" moments... but it will never get under your skin or will twist your mind as, say, F.E.A.R. does...

Still, it is a great game on its own right... 4/5

What the game tries to be : Metroid meets Bioshock.

What the game ends up being : Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets The Thing (light on thing, heavy on chainsaw)

Reasons it is good :

Decent story. Decent graphics. Story picks up as game gets going.

Reasons it is bad :

Bad controls. Bad level design (early on the levels are retarded, later on the monsters have like 2 predictable spawn points). Overall, you should know most of what happens about 3 chapters before it happens, so no surprise. The game fails at jump scares. Did I mention really god awful want to rip your eyes out controls? Absolute god awful melee system. (slight spoiler)T-h-e g-a-m-e i-s o-n-e g-i-a-n-t s-c-r-e-a-m-e-r v-i-d-e-o!!! Seriously!

Overall : Buy it for 5$, but don't expect much more then watching Pandorum. Even then, at least Pandorum didn't take 20 some odd hours. Honestly though, the controls are so god awful do yourself the favor of playing it on the easiest difficulty if just since you'll never be able to aim thanks to that.

Dead Space is nothing you haven't seen before, but it IS a lot of fun.

First of all, Dead Space is not a horror game. It's an action game in a horror setting, a bit like Doom 3 (or the movie Aliens). Don't expect this game to frighten or even startle you; do expect to slaughter a horde of gruesome alien zombies with high-tech weaponry.

That said, there's a sense of tension as you explore the ship during the game's quieter moments, and battles against swarms of necromorphs can be very intense - especially on the highest difficulty, where Isaac can only survive one or two hits. Even then, though, you'll never be starved for ammunition and medical supplies.

Blasting the aliens into bloody pieces is extremely satisfying, so much so that I started a second playthrough after completing the game (a rarity for me). Completion unlocks Impossible mode (which is not much more difficult than Medium, honestly) and the option to restart on the current difficulty with all your equipment intact.

Voice acting is solid, but while the story isn't bad per se, it's really just an excuse for the carnage, and the final chapters don't make a lot of sense. 90% of your time will be spent repairing, bypassing or restarting the Ishamura's systems - virtually everything but the vending machines has been destroyed or offline. Even the characters comment more than once on how they can't catch a break.

Overall, if you're looking for some bloody horror action, Dead Space is a solid choice.

NOTE: VSync does not work properly in this game. Turning it on causes severe input latency with the mouse, making it extremely difficult to aim and react. Leave the VSync disabled. Fortunately, the game is dark enough and slow-paced enough that you'll rarely if ever notice any screen tearing.

This game is great! I was a little putt off at first by the 3rd person combat, but once I got used to it I began to like it. The camera angle always seems to be shallow, forcing you to look around a lot, giving you a feeling of claustrophobia and paranoia about something that might be sneaking up on you. The sound effects are extremely proficient at keeping you uneasy and on guard. I got this game for $7 bucks on a special and I feel like I got a great deal, this game is worth it for the $19.99 usual price! If you love horror survival and sci-fi give it a try. Some extra notes. The voice acting is spot on, the graphics rock. I have an older machine, I could not run it maxed out, but it still looks amazing! Buy it!
