If you are a fan of Dungeons & Dragons, or just an RPG fan in general, this is definitely a must play. Note for the message about 64 bit compatibility: It is possible to run both games in Windows 7 x64. You will receive an error message when it tries to install .net 2.0, but since it is included in Windows 7, you will still be able to play.

One thing is for certain, you do get a lot of gametime for your money here. But the big question remains, what in this collection is actually worth your time & money?

As this is a collection of two games and several expansions, it is probably best to look at them individually. Be warned that even if you intend to play only one of the games, you still need to download the entire set.

Neverwinter Nights: The first game showcases the, for its time, rather good engine. It is flexible and highly moddable, and makes good use of the D&D 3.0 ruleset.

Sadly the main campaign is not very well designed. It is too long for its own good, as it starts to feel repetitive quite early on, none of the characters are the least bit memorable and the plot is just clumsily written and poorly paced, resulting in a mostly forgettable mess. The level design is also rather uninspired and never managed to feel natural. When a game world really feels like a game world, there is something wrong. The game also features one of the most poorly executed attempts to get the player to feel anger towards the main villain that I’ve ever seen in a game that tries to tell a story. Right after the tutorial some poorly fleshed out characters that you were never given a reason to care about are killed, and this is the thing that gives you the reason to go out on your quest.

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide: The first of the expansions for Neverwinter Nights gives some more tools for modders to play around with, and many mods require this expansion. It also introduces some new prestige classes.

Once again the main campaign is poorly designed. While it feels like they put some more effort into this one than the one in the original game, it still never really gets interesting. The writing this time around is at least passable, and the characters are given some more personality, but it is still a forgettable experience, and once again the campaign starts to feel repetitive long before it ends.

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark: This expansion gives the player the chance to play a high level character. It is a nice change of pace from the two previous expansions, that expected the player to start on a low level, and once again at least some effort has been put into the overall plot and some important characters. This expansion has the strongest story of the lot, but it is not without its issues, D&D 3.0 was never all that well balanced on higher levels, and it quickly becomes apparent that some character classes are far too powerful.

Neverwinter Nights: Kingmaker: This one offers 3 shorter campaigns, and no new content for modders. All of these campaigns can be finished relatively quickly, which probably is for the best. None of them are spectacular, but they never really manage to overstay their welcome.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Neverwinter Nights 2 was designed by Obsidian, and comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. A lot more effort has been put into actually writing a good story, and while it is not incredibly memorable, it is still considerably better than anything found in the original game or its expansions. Sadly the game is quite buggy, with an AI that sometimes does utterly moronic things, a camera that works as intended for some, and not for others, poor memory management and some also experience bizarre stuttering and ruberbanding. Even fully patched, this game might not be playable for everyone (for some it will work like a charm though). Also, modding is a bit trickier this time around, but it is still a really moddable game, and most of the fun will probably come from mods rather than the main campaign.

Neverwinter Nights 2 uses the D&D 3.5 ruleset, which offers quite a few changes to the formula, but most importantly, makes it far better balanced. There are still some classes that either are too good or not powerful enough (the Warlock being a prime example of the later), but you don’t run the same risk of crippling yourself based on your chosen class.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer: A huge step up in the story department, Mask of the Betrayer offers an interesting and very different story, that is far less straight-forward than the one in the previous games. Some people might find the soul eating mechanic that has been introduced in this expansion frustrating and tedious, but even then, the strong story will probably make up for this. Also, it does offer some interesting choices for the player to make along the way.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir: While previous Neverwinter Nights games & expansions only allowed you to design the main character, Storm of Zehir allows you to design an entire party. This one is somewhat similar to Icewind Dale in this regard, focusing more on tactical combat than story, and had only the engine been better, it would probably have turned out quite well. It is not impossible that someone will be able to play through this with almost no problems what so ever, but it is almost equally likely that the engine issues will make this expansion nigh unplayable for someone else.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate: I could not get this one to run, at all. So I don’t know if it is any good.

The D&D NWN games are a mixed bag of great, to decent. Some parts really stick out (ie the difference between NWN Vanilla & expansions). Having them all available in one package was very helpful to someone like myself who likes to keep everything as neat as possible.

The RPG Genre in two words to me "Neverwinter nights"

Neverwinter nights is the number one forgotten realms games for me and was one of the first RPG i ever really played. Neverwinter nights shines at so many levels and shows great detail and care in the gameplay and lore of the game. I had previously acquired neverwinter nights without expansion and this set completes the set i have looked for for years and the sale made this purchase irresistible. DEEKIN!

NWN 2: Mask of the Betrayer is reason enough alone to pick up this. I`ve also had hours of fun with Storms of Zehir, and I think the original campaign in the second game is underrated gameplay-wise, and has many enjoyable characters and events. From the first game, mainly the expansion Hordes of the Underdark is still relevant to play even today, with an excellent story and dark atmosphere. The modules Kingmaker and Witches Wake also gets my recommendations. Be sure to check out the modding community, containing among other things a fully revamped version of Icewind Dale 2 with NWN 2.

These two games will give you many many hours of gameplay. NWN1 has many many mods and a multiplayer scene which is still active and NWN2 improves the graphics and contains 4 campaigns, 2 of which are very long and in-depth. These games aren't really for "action RPG" fans but if you enjoy managing your party in strategic battles and customizing every aspect of your characters' builds from a ridiculously deep skill system, as well as exploring a brilliantly realized fantasy world, than these are the games for you.

I would consider them a must for any real RPG fan's collection. Especially at this price.

A must-have game for all computer RPG enthusiasts. Neverwinter Nights was a groundbreaking game, and the first game to neatly use 3.5ed Dungeons & Dragons ruleset on a computer RPG, in a neat and enternaining 3d game.

Neverwinter Nights 2 improved on Neverwinter Nights, with more prestige classes and graphics.

This bundle includes both games and all their expansions. It's cheaper and easier buying this bundle than buying the games and/or expansions you don't own already.

A collection of good to great games, essential for any D&D fan. Let's take them one at a time.

Neverwinter Nights is a solid game. The original campaign is decent, though unspectacular. You'll get tons of hours of quality adventuring, but it's nothing special. The shadows of Undentride expansion likewise is decent, but not memorable. The Kingmaker, Witch's Wake, and Shadowguard modules are also solid but unremarkable. Where this game really shines is the absolutely fantastic Hordes of the Underdark expansion. Bioware really outdid itself here with a fantastic story full of twists, turns, and interesting locales.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was a horribly buggy mess when it first came out, which is a shame since that marred the reputation of what is otherwise a good game, now for the most part bug free. The original campaign is good with some interesting characters, but it kind of drags through the middle of the game. Part of that is due to this being such a long game. Still, it's a solid entry. Mask of the Betrayer is the highlight in the NWN2 series. Obsidian displays some brilliant writing and characters in this excellent expansion. Storm of Zehir is a return to old school party based adventuring with a less story focused approach, but nevertheless fun. Mysteries as Westgate is solid but unremarkable.

In addition both games, particularly NWN 1, have almost limitless community made modules for free download. They range from tweaks, new races and classes, to full blown adventures. Some of these are quite good.

In conclusion, this package has hundreds of hours of quality RPG goodness, and that's not counting the community made stuff that's out there.

Okay to begin I am going to get the bad bits out of the way first. The original(NWN1) Game had a rather uninteresting story and as has been mentioned was rather clunky. The second one (at lest for me) was so glitchy at times that I had to restart when I was nearly halfway in. The graphics Are sadly out date and have some Major clipping issues in the first one. That being said These games are classics and I actually own 2 copies of the first one. The first one allowed you to choose from a number of races and classes allowing you to feel like you were making a character in an actual tabeltop game. The customization alone makes the game great. And the issues I mentioned about the story are quickly amended in the expansion packs And all of the modules made. It also added the best character in the series ... Deekin. The second one was mostly taking the first one and improving nearly every aspect of it. there was planty new classes and races to play as, more interesting npcs and story, and signifigantly less clippin errors. It also brought back deekin. So in my humble opinion, this is a purchase you should most definately not ignore.

I think everyone savvy on PC gaming is more than aware of the many glitches (NWN 2) and "clunkiness" (NWN 1) of these games (a single google search on the subject would have you believe these games cause actual physical pain in their players), but they really are classics for a reason: they are seemingly the most accurate representations of actual D&D in modern gaming.

If you have that very specific itch and want to play some games made in the past decade, your choices are a bit limited. Not to mention, due to the IP changing hands, this "complete collection" is pretty much the *only* way to get these games for a reasonable price (at least for NWN 2... you can find NWN 1 much more easily).

However, even with all the negative press in mind, these games are worth a purchase because of the comprehensive game worlds you get to experience. You just don't get games like this anymore and it is worth at least one play-through of each game before you cannot get them anymore.

I mostly purchased this because of the new ''Neverwinter Nights Nexus'' sight. I'd played this before but had wanted to expand it further with fan-made mods. Games and game companies which purposely make their games mod-friendly are the games that really are worth playing through again over time. To anyone who has already enjoyed this game, I suggest you try a few NWN mods out there, because there *is* a complete overhaul that remakes Icewind Dale II in it's entirety using the NWN engine ;)

An old game that doesn't stop being amazing. Having played the Neverwinter Nights 2 about halfway through in co-op, I can safely say I've had a lot of fun. The game has crashed a few times while running it in windows 7 but switching to compatibility mode has solved the problems so far. I definitely recommend it for anyone liking RPGs.

Neverwinter Nights: Incredibly weak main campaign, but that's to be expected given that the game was pretty much an afterthought for the toolset. At such a low price ($7.50 for me), it's worth getting for the mods alone, some of which are quite impressive.

Neverwinter Nights 2: A rather unfortunate effort by Obsidian as far as the main campaign goes. However, although the game mechanics remain flawed, the 'Mask of the Betrayer' expansion is well worth playing for the rather good story. In fact, MotB was pretty much the main reason I bought this package.

I waited for this to go back on sale. Two of the best games I have ever owned. NWN2 online can be as good as other MMORPG's, the only problem I find is some servers really push roleplaying. If your like me and some roleplaying is fun, but you get tired of over playing your character (not sure how often people just walk up to random people and start a long drawn out conversation culminating in what would be a few week adventure, to me that is not roleplaying) Trinity and Sigil are two servers I have found to be relaxing with occasional roleplaying scenarios.

Not only are these great games, but they're great games at a bargain price. Old or not, the focus of these games wasn't the graphics anyway, and the gameplay with that classic D&D charm continues to shine through. On top of the stories present, there is also a fair amount of humour: Grobnar, the insane bard's comments concerning the height of Khelgar "Dwarf-that-wants-to-be-a-monk" Ironfist can be absolutely hilarious. They give enough development to the characters that a simple joke, combined with Grobnar's marvelous voice actor, multiplies itself. The characters are people you feel like you know. Unless you decided not to use them, which is entirely an option. At points I left the majority of my very capable squadron of companions in the tavern, preferring to travel with the same few that I felt I connected with. The game allows you to do this, but also provides certain downsides to neglecting your other prospective friends. The character creation system is detailed; it's very similar to what you'd expect should you play a campaign in D&D 3/3.5. On top of classes, there are also the many, many prestige classes. I should note that the majority of this post concerns Neverwinter Nights 2, the base game. I didn't even diverge into its addons, or its precursor, the addons alone adding over 10 hours of gameplay to an already monumentous game. I sincerely recommend this bundle.

I am glad to finally grab this on sale! NWN is one of my favorite series ever. It's hard to believe it's been almost ten years. I prefer the original over the sequel, but both games are great. It was amazing (at the time) to play a game that felt like Baldur's Gate and and looked like Morrowind. My experience with Western RPG's was top-down until NWN. These games opened the door to me playing the Elder Scrolls series*, Mass Effect Series, and the much newer Dragon Age Series. Bioware knows what they're doing!

One thing to note; I am sure it has been patched by now, but on my first playthrough I ran into a gamebreaking glitch. I killed some deer outside of one of the towns which caused the villagers and main-quest-giver to attack me.

*I know TES series is not Bioware.

Plenty of mods out there for those who want them and tons of persistent worlds (mini-MMORPGs, ranging from action PvP to deep DM-heavy roleplay. This is the sort of game you could easily play for months or even longer. Simply put, once you get into Neverwinter Nights, you'll likely have no need or desire to play another role-playing game for a long time--or any other game for that matter. Neverwinter Nights is the best multiplayer D&D 3.0 experience you can have with a PC.

Playing with friends is just like play the real D&D with paper and dices.

The single player experience is also really good although you maybe miss a bit the "classic" D&D party as in Baldur's Gate or IceWind Dale.

The 3d engine of the game still looks very good.

NWN2 is even better : using the new D&D3.5 ruleset, a revamped 3d engine and imho a better single player campaign (especially the expansions) it's simply one of the greatest CRPG based on Dungeons and Dragons ruleset.

Two must-have for any D&D and CRPG player.

Worthy purchase and a must for any RPG fan.

Developed by Bioware and Obsidian, this package contains two stellar entries in Dungeons and Dragons gaming history. Spanning the lengthy core Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, also included are 3 official expansions for NWN1 and 2 official expansions for the sequel. Also, note that these games are infinitely expandable by downloading fan made Modules for new adventures. Also, recently the official Bioware premium modules for the original game are now freeware, so don't forget those quality adventures as well. I haven't tried these in multiplayer myself, but from what I understand, its the closest thing to running a tabletop game possible from a PC or Mac, so give these a shot, moreso if it's on sale!

A flawed classic... but a classic nonetheless

By Kosmonaut posted 28th February 2012

I have been a fan of CRPG for years, and I used to be a Bioware fan. I remember getting Neverwinter Nights the month it was released. It was a cool game, but ultimately disappointing.

Neverwinter Nights 2, being a game from one of my favorite developers (Obsidian) was on my "must get list" event before being released... until I started to watch some gameplay, and reading some reviews. After playing the game I was utterly disappointed by its bland mechanics, pervasive hand-holding and severe unoptimization. The demo was a hog for my (at that time) reasonably decent PC. Anyways, I just ended skipping it altogether.

The only decent thing from NWN2 is the "Mask of the Betrayed" expansion. This game is actually good. And although it shares the same uninteresting mechanics, high demanding engine as its predecessor, it actually raises the bar in the story department.

And it was for that game that I got this package on special. MotB is actually worth of the collection price. Even if you dislike NWN, I still recommend this expansion.

But Neverwinter Nights 2 has always had a place in my heart, it just has that special something. Story is epic, and it really kicks in in the later part of the game. Characters and their relationships are quite amusing even though I always despised Neeshka. Graphically it looks good, but camera has occasionally some issues

Without a doubt the best deal for months

By supernova54321 posted 20th February 2012

Whether you are a big fan of D&D or not, the Neverwinter Nights series offers a huge, deep and potentially infinite amount of on and offline gaming.

Neverwinter Nights 1 + expansions offers the solid basics of D&D 3.5 gameplay with an easy to use UI to ease in beginners, hours upon hours of deep single player campaigns and solid tools for playing online with friends, for the more advanced users.

NWN 2 + expansions has been criticised for not improving on the DM tools of the first NWN, and from what I understand the online community never took off in quite the same way, but it still offers the same (and improved) kind of gameplay with fresh graphics and expanded functionality and character building.

Whatever your tastes, if you're even remotely into RPGs of any kind you can't afford to miss out on this package. Buying it on offer will give you an eye-wateringly good deal (I got it on the NWN weekend for 7 quid) but even for the normal price of £20 it's still a pretty good offer that will give you 10+ single players campaigns of incredible depth, and a huge bang for your buck.

By Brygun posted 14th December 2011

This game package includes both versions of the Neverwinter Nights (NWN) games and their modules.

NWN itself is based on the famous Dungeons and Dragons game mechanics. Specifically the 3.5 edition of the game. Standalone you can play the modules for alot of fun in different classes.

The real adventure in the game is playing online. You see every copy of NWN has the abilty to host a game. You can do it for a few friends one night or setup a Persistent World (PW). This gives you a huge expansion to the game play. Some game worlds change the mechanics and/or the setting to various fan works (Like The True Source 2 being a fan game of the Wheel of Time). Original settings include Layonara. There are alot more than I can mention.

Gameplay online varies considerably. The quality of the stories and the people varies. I've had both alot of joy and alot of frustration at times. NWN is the game that has been on and off my hard drive the most often.

As a veteran player who already has most of these I decided to buy the collection again for a few reasons. One is that it puts it all happily in one place. The other is that original game CDs where from the CD era. I my original NWN disk shatter inside a modern high speed drive.

The NWN community is quite large. There are several places that also rate the works of others.

Some of those websites are:

http://www.neverwinterconnections.com/

http://nwvault.ign.com/

From those you can find alot of people, places, mods to pay on. Nwvault also has single player modules available for download.

The game itself is 5/5 for me. A huge amount of gaming time available. Building, modding and hosting ability included in the same price. Multiplayer online is where its at for this one.
